Calm and Condition: did it work for you?

Has C&C worked for you?

I found it was good at keeping condition on my hardworking hunter TB.... Yet funnily enough I've never actually found it any good at getting the condition on in the first place.
Personally I think it's because of the colassal amounts you end up feeding (when soaked) to get the correct amounts of everything.

Much better conditioning feeds at much better prices TBH

Dragging this back up as I've just taken my mare off it. She has lost more weight on it and turned into a psycho. I got clean bucked off today!

Does anyone know what's in it that sends them loopy? I want to avoid it at all costs!

For it to work, you need to feed at the suggested weight and feed nothing else much.
I actually add linseed and recently the ERS pellets as I need more energy and being barefoot, liable to tie up, cereal intolerant its the feed that works for me!

Problem is people that then add chaff's to it, really is one of those feeds where you have to follow the diet for this to work.

My daughter uses C+C for her horse and he is blooming on it, and behaving well.
I prefer Thunderbrook base mix for mine .. and ditto.
: )

Yes, but I last used it over 5 years ago, and the horse in question was a 17h tb/ID broodmare who dropped weight rather fast in winter. I don't know if it calmed her down at all, it didn't make her any worse and she did seem to put on condition but it may have been that we started feeding her earlier, or the other feeds it was fed with (think she was on something like alfalfa oil, stud mix, sugarbeet and c and c) so not really a definite yes

I am feeding it to my 20 year old hunter who is blooming on it. He came looking a bit poor and now is carrying a good bit of weight and looks and feels great. He is fed oats alongside as well as linseed and his supplements. He gets 3/4 dry scoop C&C with amount of oats depending on what he is doing that day all soaked and supplements added. I am more than happy with it for him.

I have experienced a fantastic results for one horse and a terrible result for another! My Tb mare is very quick to lose condition so she was on it last winter and recently started her back on it. For her it's fantastic, she stays sensible her coat looks great and the condition stays on her. However, I tried feeding it to my new forest mare who is a bit of an anxious character. I thought it might help her at a time when her work load is increasing and becoming more varied. Bad idea! She became more anxious and very on edge. She ended up flattening me as I led her and stepping all over me in the process (massive bruises on my arm, leg and bum to show for it!). It was so totally out of character for her as she is normally very sweet and easy to handle. I've changed her feed now and she's back to her normal self.
Maybe it's coincidental but it does seem that calm and condition is great for one of my mares but a disaster for the other!

Sent my TB mare bat ***** crazy! Use it on the old boy who I don't have to ride any more but had to stop her after 4 days as thought she'd kill us both! Would use it again but only with caution!

I had an A & P visit and all mine have been on a mixture of C & C and Fast Fibre for the last 3 weeks. Havent notuced any loopiness in any of them, and 2 of the thinnest have noticeably put on wieght with no change in character, The one in full hard work is gradually putting on top line and was always a loop box, doesnt seem a great deal different, slightly better attention span if anything. I have been able to stop the calmers and general vit supps, and only add oat straw chaff and linseed as needed. I will continue for another month and then make a decision, Only one of them doesnt appear to have put on weight but definately is feeling better in himself (he hasnt been right since he came back from a loan 18 months ago). He seems more alert and interested in work without being in any way loopy. I have one who is Alfalfa intolerant, one who is barley intolerant, one ex laminitic and all barefoot, so the diet has to be very carefully balanced if I am not to end up with an entire feed merchants stock in my feed room. So far so good

I had my horse (Irish draught X Connermara) on this a few months after getting him. Helped him gain weight and grow (4 year old.) Did give him extra energy and needed to make sure he was worked every day however if your horse isnt naturally high spirited shouldnt be a problem. Known other horses that it really helped and no one had a problem.

I now use fast fibre and that really helps him to maintain his weight and keep well conditioned. Would recommend however the 'calm' doesnt always apply :)

My TB/ISH went batty in the head on it. He turns into a hat rack in the winter, last year we kept him on it for 3 months in the hope it would do something - saw absolutely no change. Waste of money and time.

My tbx is on it and he can be really hot headed and loses condition in a heartbeat, I put him on it last winter when grazing was really limited and he looked like a hat rack, he put a bit back on and maintained this without getting hot headed. Hes still on it now and has looked fantastic all summer. The only thing that really keeps weight on him tho is lots of the green stuff in the field.!
