Yes I'm just experimenting as I've never used a calmer before - I have Equine America Magnitude at the moment but after three weeks I can't see much difference, still snorty and spooky and my OH was only rolling a hay bale in while I was riding, obviously didn't connect it with tea
I have Hattie on Magitude at the moment. She's only been on it 10 days but I have started to see a difference. I like her to be fresh and spooky but my mum doesn't.
We have a horse at work on it as well (thats why I tried it) who was abused when he was younger so some things get too much for him. The Magitude has helping him a lot although he does look like he has been smoking funny stuff. He looks very spaced out.
My gelding is on Netex Nice and Easy and that is brilliant stuff. He was very nervous and spooky to start with but now, I only need to give him a tiny amount (10ml) every other day to keep him calm.
I used magic and it didnt make a difference to my boy someone recomended feedmark steady up he was on it about a week and i saw a difference, would really recomend it
I've just taken my mare off EA Magnitude. She was fab on it - it was the only one to have any effect on her at all. I've used two tubs and I'm trying her without now in the hope she's growing up
Sorry, I did mean to put Blue Chip Karma. I'm not used to using calmers, very old school I'm afraid and thought something might just take the edge off, it felt like I was riding a 19hh and not a 17hh this afternoon. I've followed quite a few of these calmer questions over the past year or so and still can't make my mind up.
Oxyshot and NAF Magic had no effect whatsoever on my TB - I used Equine America So Kalm plus after it was recommended by Millbrook Song on here, and it has been brilliant
Twice the price of magnitude mind you, so I have just taken him off it as I am hopefully becoming a more effective rider and am more able to get him to concentrate without it
From my experience there are a few differences. Either magnesium based or not or Valerian based or not - depends on whether you are competing as Valerian is a banned substance.
Any calmer (in feed as opposed to syringed in) will take a few days to take effect. So don't give up, stick with it as you will prob need to give it a month.
I've had mine on two human magnesium tablets per day for a few months now and she's been pretty chilled. I've also used So Kalm plus syringe before travelling and had good results from that.
Carl Hester Pro Mag works brilliantly before shows - everyone i know who needs a calmer uses it and loves it (pain though as the shops usually sell out before i get there to buy some!)
Used NAF Steady Up on an alpha mare a couple of years ago - worked brilliantly til they "improved" the formula and then it didn't work at all
Used Magnitude last yr - didn't touch the horse at all. (stressy Belgian WB)
he also had oxyshot - fab for competition but wore off in a second
and magic - worked well
and Nupafeed which was £££ but worked the best - was FAB - can fine tune the horse for home and shows with this one
Currently successfully using Steady up on a very forward thinking WB/TB hunter as Magic doesn't register with him
I used Calmag £8 for 20kg yes that right it is a big bag ! Lasts me about a year lol
Meant for cows to stop them getting footrot I think but works a treat , contacted manufacturers and they said it is safe for equine use. Someone once told me that the magnesium in Magic is to low that might be why some of you haven't seen any difference.
just tried magic on my horse on box rest, and it is magic he finally has stopped haring round all day!
Probably means he had a magnesium deficiency though as I am led to believe this and the majority of clamers which are also magnesium based only work if this is so.
However considering he had a week away at the vets and an operation under general anasthetic I am sure this is highly likely. (think magnesium deficiency can be caused by stress )
