Im looking to buy or loan a new horse soon but im a bit confused as to where to go for insurance.

Im looking at a 15.3/16hh, 10-year-old gelding to buy/lease but this is the first time i will have had the oppurtunity to have my own horse and im a bit confused insurance wise! There is so many companies out there offering equine insurance that its all a bit overwhelming! can anyone out there recommend a good insurance company or policy? Im pretty busy at the moment so im not going to be competing with my horse it will just be a case of hacking and a bit of school work to keep both me and my horse fit and happy! I dont want a bad insurance plan but i dont want to be paying to much, any ideas?

and any tips for a first time horse owner?! lol

Thanks!

I'm with NFU and have been for years without any problems with them. If they aren't taking on new horse clients SEIB also have a good reputation. There are also a few I certainly wouldn't use but can't really mention them on here or I'll be in BIG trouble.

I would go with NFU or Equestrian Direct every time. I've been with ED for years with two different horses, and had a huge claim on each horse. Never been any trouble, they've always been more than helpful and have coughed up both times (even though I had only paid them about £200 by the time I asked them for £5000 to investigate my horse's lameness!)
NFU are also highly recommended by many many people. I only went with ED because of the slight price difference. AmTrust used to be ED's underwriters before they split off a while ago - my claims with ED were both before the split so I would recommend them too on that basis.
Make sure you find out though who NOT to use

Another vote for Equestrian Direct. They are professional, efficient, reasonably priced and very helpful. I'd only had Sunny a few weeks when he developed the eye problem that after 6 months of battles led to him having the eye removed - they were brilliant about it all.

Thanks to everyone youve all helped a lot whether its been telling me who to get quotes from or who not to! and now im off to get quotes from NFU and Equestrian Direct and think i may try a few others aswell thanks for all the advice!
