can anyone spare two mins for a bedding questionnare?

1) Paper. Droppings and wet removed daily
2) Its the best for the horses respiratory systems . No dust and no ammonia.
3) Very. 1-2 bags per week per stable. usually only 1 bag, 2 if a very dirty horse.
4) No. Takes minimal time, mucked out with gloves. Would never deep litter any bed because of ammonia and bacteria but would think paper would be very heavy to remove if wet left in.
5) Have used straw, shavings, easibed, hemp and wood pellets over the years but have been on paper for at least 8 years and would never change due to point 2 above.

1) A mixture of shavings and chopped straw(they come mixed in a bale) eith rubber mats under it. I skip out morning and night, and dig out once a week.
2) Stays drier that shavings on their own, and is cheaper than a lot of specialist beddings.
3) 3 bales a week usually, but this is a lot less than my horse on other bedding types. (hes very wet!)
4) Not really time consuming. 20 mins each day, 1 hour to dig out each week. I wouldn't do true deep litter with it as hy horse is v. wet so not sure what its like.
5) Have tried lots of different beddings. Found this to be cheaper and cleaner for my horse.

1) What type of bedding do you use? How do you use that bedding?
Flax. Skip out during week and full muck out at weekend. I add some flax every other day to keep the bed clean. On rubber matting.

2) Why do you use this type of bedding?
Its cheaper than shavings and I prefer it to straw.
3) Is it cost effective? How many bales/bags do you use a week?
I use about 1 bag a week during winter and 2 bags a month during summer at most. So very cost effective.
4) Is it time consuiming to muck out? (Can you deep litter etc.)
No. Takes about 15mins weekdays then 45mins ish on a weekend to do a full muckout. I semi deeplitter as I dont remove much wet during week.
5) Have you ever used or considered other types of bedding?
I've considered changing to easibed shavings but cant afford to right now.

This is for my college project, if you could spare a couple of mins just to answer these questions about your bedding:

1) What type of bedding do you use? How do you use that bedding? Wood pellets
2) Why do you use this type of bedding? One has laminitis the other is the worlds dirtiest horse
3) Is it cost effective? How many bales/bags do you use a week? Yes - 10kg bag is £2.34 and 1 tonne lasts a whole winter for two horse. Probably use 1 or 2 bags.
4) Is it time consuiming to muck out? (Can you deep litter etc.) No 2 stables take 15 minutes
5) Have you ever used or considered other types of bedding?
Have used straw - one is laminitic so not anymore and the other was taking 3 -4 wheelbarrows o dirty straw a day! Have used shavings but they are far to expensive now for 2 horse when one is soooooooooo dirty.
Thanks

1) Shavings. A form of deep litter (we leave a base level and muck the top out as normal.
2) It is what the yard use.
3) Yes, we get our shavings loose in a converted lorry. We use about 4 big wheelbarrow loads 2-3 weeks per horse.
4) No, It takes me about 7 mins per horse.
5) Have used straw, easibed, multimix etc in the past.

1) What type of bedding do you use? How do you use that bedding?

Rubber mats and shavings. Bed in back half of stables, rubber matted through out. Bed has banks and is about 2/3 of the thickness there would be if no mats.

2) Why do you use this type of bedding?

Less bedding, quicker to muck out. Mats as they are warmer, mroe confortable and I dont need to worry about going through to concrete. Also menas that if stood at the door he is never standing on conrete.

3) Is it cost effective? How many bales/bags do you use a week?

Starw is included in livery but I get £5 off a week as I dont use straw. However shavings are £8.30 a back and I use a bag every 5 or 6 days, so more exoensive, and I need to remember to get more. get 3 or 4 backs at time at feedstore.

4) Is it time consuiming to muck out? (Can you deep litter etc.)

I dont deep litter, dont think it works for shavings, but it takes less time to muck out, 10mins is being generaous to do.

5) Have you ever used or considered other types of bedding?

He used to be on straw and no mats. I prefer straw with no mats. And shavings with mats. The straw isnt absorbant enought and so wee goes under tha mats and collects. But shavings the wee is absorbed and mats dry under. But I find straw better adn easier to make a nice deep bed that dosnt move and the horses dont get through to the concrete. I feel shavings can move too much and go through to concrete at times.

1. Bedown Excel (Mix of shavings and dust extracted straw). Take out droppings daily (several times a day when horses are in), take out wet every 3-4 days. All horses are on rubber mats too.
2 Clean and makes a fluffy bed. Also smells nice.
3. Use 2 bags per week per horse
4. Easy to muck out
5. Have used straw in the past, have tried megazorb and aquamax, but keep coming back to Excel as others are too expensive.

1) chopped straw/shavings mixture
2) easy to use, makes a good bed and cheap!
3) Mare - 1 bale per week, Gelding 2 bags a week
4) No, the poo doesn't stick and the wet is easy to lift out. I do not deep litter, but I guess it would work well!
5) Have tried various other types but after 9 years owing mare, this is only bedding she is very clean on!

1. Wood pellets

2. Very absorbent, does not smell of urine

3. 1 bag per week

4. Takes about 15min to do the stable including putting out haylage, could do it faster if I pushed myself. I use rubber mats and a litter system (not deep litter!!! Litter: a small area for collecting the pee).

5. Have tried straw: heavy, bulky and smelly; shavings: need too much for a really absoebent bed and it does smell.

1) Straw with layer of savings underneath. use as deep bed
2) a lot cheaper than shavings
3) very cost effective. use 1 bale a week plus half bag shavings
4) during the week I deep litter and clear out at weekends. i work full time and this is quickest way i find to muck out with deep bed. Wee soaks through to shavings below leaving top straw dry as anything.
5) have considered shavings but too expensive

1) What type of bedding do you use? How do you use that bedding?
One horse on chopped straw---he digs up a shavings bed, one on shavings--do not deep litter
2) Why do you use this type of bedding?
Cheapest available at the moment, one horse may eat chopped straw so he is on shavings
3) Is it cost effective? How many bales/bags do you use a week?
Approx 1-1.5 bags chopped straw weekly, 1 shavings every 2 weeks (horse rarely pees in stable)
4) Is it time consuiming to muck out? (Can you deep litter etc.)
Both fairly quick, shavings quicker
5) Have you ever used or considered other types of bedding?
Have used chopped cardboard for many years but cheap local source stopped trading
also used straw (small bales when good quality available locally)

1) What type of bedding do you use? How do you use that bedding? - I use Miscanthus (Elephant Grass) and would never use anything else
2) Why do you use this type of bedding? - Easy to use and doesn't produce a huge muck heap!
3) Is it cost effective? How many bales/bags do you use a week? It isn't the cheapest bedding around: sorry I don't know how many bales a week I used
4) Is it time consuiming to muck out? (Can you deep litter etc.) - it is mega easy to muck out; just pick up the poo and anything that's badly soiled, and job done! Yes I think it would well for deep litter.
5) Have you ever used or considered other types of bedding? I've tried straw (messy and time-consuming + horse ate it); newspaper shredded (very heavy when soiled and made a mess in the yard); and sawdust (clumpy when soiled)

1) What type of bedding do you use? How do you use that bedding? Straw, full daily muck out.
2) Why do you use this type of bedding? Available on site at the yard so no need to go and pick bales of something else up in the car.
3) Is it cost effective? How many bales/bags do you use a week? £3 per week for as much as you want. Not sure how much I use as it comes in huge huge bales that are moved with a JCB! Probably the equivalent of 2 small bales but I would probably manage on 1 if paying by the bale and having to be sensible with it!
4) Is it time consuiming to muck out? (Can you deep litter etc.) No, full muck out in 5 minutes tops.
5) Have you ever used or considered other types of bedding? Previously used Aubiose and Easibed and Cushionbed. All on a semi deep litter basis mucked fully at weekends. Changed to straw purely to save money.

1) What type of bedding do you use? How do you use that bedding? Bliss (chopped rape straw) - deep litter throughout the week with full muck out at weekends, on top of rubber mats

2) Why do you use this type of bedding? cost effective, not edible, breaks down quickly on heap and easy to muck out

3) Is it cost effective? How many bales/bags do you use a week? about £6 a bale, was using one bale a week on a horse that was on box rest

4) Is it time consuiming to muck out? (Can you deep litter etc.) no, can deep litter

5) Have you ever used or considered other types of bedding? used and like straw but drawbacks are very smelly and horses were eating so much I was putting in a new bale every other day so worked out expensive. Shavings - they are ok, but pricey and I don't find they are that easy to muck out

1) What type of bedding do you use? How do you use that bedding?
Wood fibre "easibed type" Choice of deep litter or full muck out depending on time and horse. Some are so bad that they are on full muck out. All on rubber mat

2) Why do you use this type of bedding?
Easy to store / manoever. Cheaper, cleaner, moves around less. Ponies not tempted to eat it!

3) Is it cost effective? How many bales/bags do you use a week?
£4 a bag. About 1 a week for most and 2 for the 17.2hh.

4) Is it time consuiming to muck out? (Can you deep litter etc.)
Very quick to muck out, especially when some of them are very dirty Easy to deep litter

5) Have you ever used or considered other types of bedding?
Have used all sorts including shavings but having 6 horses I find this to be the most cost effective and easy all round.

1) What type of bedding do you use? How do you use that bedding? Straw, full muck out
2) Why do you use this type of bedding? It's cheap and easy!
3) Is it cost effective? How many bales/bags do you use a week? Yes £2.75 a bale, horse very clean so only about 1 bake a week
4) Is it time consuiming to muck out? (Can you deep litter etc.) Not time consuming, takes 5-10minutes full muck out
5) Have you ever used or considered other types of bedding?
Have used shavings and paper, both fine. Just use straw now as it's cheaper!

5) Have you ever used or considered other types of bedding?
We used to be on shavings about 6 years ago and will never go back to them, cost to much, and Twizzy is one mucky monster!!

full bed only takes about 5 mins
5) Have you ever used or considered other types of bedding?
have tried paper but preferred shavings

auboise & deep litter
2) Why do you use this type of bedding?
cheapest to use and less time spent on mucking out
3) Is it cost effective? How many bales/bags do you use a week?

1) What type of bedding do you use? How do you use that bedding?
- Aubiose, Semi-deep littered (remove wet once a week)
2) Why do you use this type of bedding?
- Genie's very clean on it, and it's time effective
3) Is it cost effective? How many bales/bags do you use a week?
- It costs almost £9 a bale, but I only use one bale a week and would use a lot more on other types of bedding
4) Is it time consuiming to muck out? (Can you deep litter etc.)
- Mucking out is quicker than levelling (I'm a perfectionist), then the big muckout once a week takes longer, but still not too bad.
5) Have you ever used or considered other types of bedding?
- She'll eat straw so that's out, and she was HORRIBLE on shavings... I would need 2 - 3 bales a week which was just not feasable.

1) What type of bedding do you use? How do you use that bedding?
Equibed - shavings

2) Why do you use this type of bedding?
It's provided by yard owner as this is the only muck the local farmer will take away

Not too expensive - I use 2 bales a week at £6 each

4) Is it time consuiming to muck out? (Can you deep litter etc.)
Very quick - just take out the poo and use it deep litter.

5) Have you ever used or considered other types of bedding?
would consider rubber matting but cost prohibitive for me at the moment.

1) What type of bedding do you use? How do you use that bedding?

Straw on rubber mats, full muck out everyday

2) Why do you use this type of bedding?

I started using it as its what the YO had in.

3) Is it cost effective? How many bales/bags do you use a week?

Very cost effective. I have considered changing to shavings but straw is just so cheap. I use 2 bales a week at the most. I just chuck in whatever she needs and never worry about the cost.

4) Is it time consuiming to muck out? (Can you deep litter etc.)

It only takes so long to much out because of the mats. They move around and the floor underneath isnt level so I always lift the mats and disinfect the floor at least once a week. Im contemplating getting rid but she scrapes her hocks if she gets down to the concrete.

5) Have you ever used or considered other types of bedding?

As above I considered shavings or hemp so that the wet doesnt get underneath the mats but the price is putting me off.

1) Wood pellets on EVA mats. Fully mucked out each day.

2) Cost, absobancy, ease of mucking out.

3) Yes, cost efective. I use approx 3 bags per week for two wet boys at £3 per bag for a nicer bed than I've been able to have before due to wetness.

4) Quick and easy to muck out, although I am now so precious about my bed, I take forever! Used straw (wet, smelly and sets off my asthma). Shavings (too expensive). Chopped straw (wet, more expensive than my wood pellets and hard work to muck out in comparison)

1) What type of bedding do you use? How do you use that bedding?
- best quality shavings. I have rubber matts, and a big bed with high banks.
2) Why do you use this type of bedding?
- it's easy!
3) Is it cost effective? How many bales/bags do you use a week?
- not really, it's about £8 a bale and i use 2/3 a week :S
4) Is it time consuiming to muck out? (Can you deep litter etc.)
- yes, but only because i am very fussy, and my boy is quite messy.
5) Have you ever used or considered other types of bedding?
- no, our yard owner won't allow straw and no other bedding appeals.
