can anyone spare two mins for a bedding questionnare?

1) Paper. Droppings and wet removed daily
2) Its the best for the horses respiratory systems . No dust and no ammonia.
3) Very. 1-2 bags per week per stable. usually only 1 bag, 2 if a very dirty horse.
4) No. Takes minimal time, mucked out with gloves. Would never deep litter any bed because of ammonia and bacteria but would think paper would be very heavy to remove if wet left in.
5) Have used straw, shavings, easibed, hemp and wood pellets over the years but have been on paper for at least 8 years and would never change due to point 2 above.
 
1) A mixture of shavings and chopped straw(they come mixed in a bale) eith rubber mats under it. I skip out morning and night, and dig out once a week.
2) Stays drier that shavings on their own, and is cheaper than a lot of specialist beddings.
3) 3 bales a week usually, but this is a lot less than my horse on other bedding types. (hes very wet!)
4) Not really time consuming. 20 mins each day, 1 hour to dig out each week. I wouldn't do true deep litter with it as hy horse is v. wet so not sure what its like.
5) Have tried lots of different beddings. Found this to be cheaper and cleaner for my horse.

Have used straw - one is laminitic so not anymore and the other was taking 3 -4 wheelbarrows o dirty straw a day! Have used shavings but they are far to expensive now for 2 horse when one is soooooooooo dirty.

Rubber mats and shavings. Bed in back half of stables, rubber matted through out. Bed has banks and is about 2/3 of the thickness there would be if no mats.

Less bedding, quicker to muck out. Mats as they are warmer, mroe confortable and I dont need to worry about going through to concrete. Also menas that if stood at the door he is never standing on conrete.

Starw is included in livery but I get £5 off a week as I dont use straw. However shavings are £8.30 a back and I use a bag every 5 or 6 days, so more exoensive, and I need to remember to get more. get 3 or 4 backs at time at feedstore.

I dont deep litter, dont think it works for shavings, but it takes less time to muck out, 10mins is being generaous to do.

5) Have you ever used or considered other types of bedding?

He used to be on straw and no mats. I prefer straw with no mats. And shavings with mats. The straw isnt absorbant enought and so wee goes under tha mats and collects. But shavings the wee is absorbed and mats dry under. But I find straw better adn easier to make a nice deep bed that dosnt move and the horses dont get through to the concrete. I feel shavings can move too much and go through to concrete at times.
 
1. Bedown Excel (Mix of shavings and dust extracted straw). Take out droppings daily (several times a day when horses are in), take out wet every 3-4 days. All horses are on rubber mats too.
2 Clean and makes a fluffy bed. Also smells nice.
3. Use 2 bags per week per horse
4. Easy to muck out
5. Have used straw in the past, have tried megazorb and aquamax, but keep coming back to Excel as others are too expensive.

4) No, the poo doesn't stick and the wet is easy to lift out. I do not deep litter, but I guess it would work well!

4. Takes about 15min to do the stable including putting out haylage, could do it faster if I pushed myself. I use rubber mats and a litter system (not deep litter!!! Litter: a small area for collecting the pee).

5. Have tried straw: heavy, bulky and smelly; shavings: need too much for a really absoebent bed and it does smell.
 
1) Straw with layer of savings underneath. use as deep bed
2) a lot cheaper than shavings
3) very cost effective. use 1 bale a week plus half bag shavings
4) during the week I deep litter and clear out at weekends. i work full time and this is quickest way i find to muck out with deep bed. Wee soaks through to shavings below leaving top straw dry as anything.

4) Is it time consuiming to muck out? (Can you deep litter etc.) - it is mega easy to muck out; just pick up the poo and anything that's badly soiled, and job done! Yes I think it would well for deep litter.

Probably the equivalent of 2 small bales but I would probably manage on 1 if paying by the bale and having to be sensible with it!

Wood fibre "easibed type" Choice of deep litter or full muck out depending on time and horse. Some are so bad that they are on full muck out. All on rubber mat

Easy to store / manoever. Cheaper, cleaner, moves around less. Ponies not tempted to eat it!

£4 a bag. About 1 a week for most and 2 for the 17.2hh.

Very quick to muck out, especially when some of them are very dirty Easy to deep litter

Have used all sorts including shavings but having 6 horses I find this to be the most cost effective and easy all round.

- Mucking out is quicker than levelling (I'm a perfectionist), then the big muckout once a week takes longer, but still not too bad.

- She'll eat straw so that's out, and she was HORRIBLE on shavings... I would need 2 - 3 bales a week which was just not feasable.

Very cost effective. I have considered changing to shavings but straw is just so cheap. I use 2 bales a week at the most. I just chuck in whatever she needs and never worry about the cost.

It only takes so long to much out because of the mats. They move around and the floor underneath isnt level so I always lift the mats and disinfect the floor at least once a week. Im contemplating getting rid but she scrapes her hocks if she gets down to the concrete.

As above I considered shavings or hemp so that the wet doesnt get underneath the mats but the price is putting me off.

3) Yes, cost efective. I use approx 3 bags per week for two wet boys at £3 per bag for a nicer bed than I've been able to have before due to wetness.

4) Quick and easy to muck out, although I am now so precious about my bed, I take forever! Used straw (wet, smelly and sets off my asthma). Shavings (too expensive). Chopped straw (wet, more expensive than my wood pellets and hard work to muck out in comparison)
