This is for my college project, if you could spare a couple of mins just to answer these questions about your bedding:

1) What type of bedding do you use? How do you use that bedding?
2) Why do you use this type of bedding?
3) Is it cost effective? How many bales/bags do you use a week?
4) Is it time consuiming to muck out? (Can you deep litter etc.)
5) Have you ever used or considered other types of bedding?

Thanks

1) Bed down excel (mixed shavings and straw) (Don't know what you mean by how I use the bedding)
2) Because he eats straw and shavings are more expensive
3) Fairly, usually get through about 3 per week
4) Not too bad, but he is an unusually mucky horse
5) Have used shaving, but it was more expensive

1) Straw - Deep Litter
2) Cheap/Cleanest
3) Very (incl in livery cost) use a bale a week
4) 10 mins
5) Have tried shavings and aquamax - more expensive and no cleaner or easier to muck out than deep litten

1. Straw bedding (on rubber matting)
2. Horse is happy on it, it's cheap, I think it provides a warm cosy bed
3. Yes, very! I use just under 2 bales a week (£1.75 a bale)
4. No, I deep litter and take out wet once a week
5. Previously old pony was on shaving for a short amount of time but changed back to straw as soon as I could.

Hope that's ok

Here you go..

1) What type of bedding do you use? How do you use that bedding?
Straw - deep litter in the week when i'm at uni, my dad skips off everyday.

2) Why do you use this type of bedding?
Its included in the livery.

3) Is it cost effective? How many bales/bags do you use a week?
Don't have to pay as its included in the livery, not really sure how much i use, but if i was paying for it myself, I would say that it is cost effective.

4) Is it time consuiming to muck out? (Can you deep litter
etc.)
Not that bad really, both my horses are quite dirty, but i'd say its quicker than shavings as i spend ages on shaving making sure its white!

5) Have you ever used or considered other types of bedding?
Used eggboxs - rubbish hated them!
Shavings, really liked them, but now at different yard where they arn't included in price.

1. Shavings and rubber mats. Cover 3/4 floor with approx. 4'' shavings plus banks
2. Less dusty than other beddings, easy to muck out, comfy bed for horse, farmer will take it in muck heap
3. Has become more expensive in last 2 years, I still find it more cost effective than other beddings I've tried. I muck out fully each day but am very very careful not to throw dry shavings away (I'm stingy like that
grin.gif
). When weather is bad, 1 bale per horse a week, if they are out in the daytime, 1 bales lasts more like 10 days
4. I find it really easy to muck out, takes 5 mins per stable
5. I've tried elephant grass and some of the other newer beddings but altho they might be easier to obtain at the moment, I find I need to buy more to make the beds as nice as the shavings beds

Hope this helps

1.Straw
2. Available free of charge
3.As much as I want.It probably equates to about a bale a week.
4.Can deep litter but I choose not to.Takes about 10 minutes to muck out and lift bed
5.Have used normal shavings, large flake shaving(bedmax) and easibed.

All have advantages/disadvantages but my choice is down to the cost and availability

Horse 1
1) What type of bedding do you use? Straw
How do you use that bedding? Full Muck out
2) Why do you use this type of bedding? cheap
3) Is it cost effective? How many bales/bags do you use a week? Yes and 2 bales a week
4) Is it time consuiming to muck out? (Can you deep litter etc.) No takes 15 mins in the morning a 5 min the afternoon
5) Have you ever used or considered other types of bedding? she has been on shavings and flax clean on both but they are expensive.

Horse 2
1) What type of bedding do you use? How do you use that bedding? Hemp and deep littered
2) Why do you use this type of bedding? breathing issues
3) Is it cost effective? How many bales/bags do you use a week? 1/2 to 1 bale not as cheap as other beddings but its about the horses comfort than cost
4) Is it time consuiming to muck out? (Can you deep litter etc.) nope takes me 10 mins to muck out a little longer when i take the wee out
5) Have you ever used or considered other types of bedding? i have use paper and shavings but this is what works well for my lad

Sure:

1) Straw. Mucked out everyday.
2) Cheap, well padded
3) Yes, 2 slices per day.
4) Yes it can be shavings is allot easier. I don't deep litter.
5) I have used shavings.

1) What type of bedding do you use? How do you use that bedding?

Straw (over rubber mats but have full bed down anyway), skip out daily, full muck out at weekend - horses are only in for about 6 hours a day though and live out otherwise. Was doing full muck out daily when in overnight during snow.

2) Why do you use this type of bedding?

Cheap, easily available & good quality straw (yard is on working farm so grown on site), warm, horses are cleaner on it than other beddings I've used, easier for me to work with than other beddings, rots down easily, 1 horse in particular likes to lie down in big fluffy bed (and I do mean that, not anthropomorphising, I keep telling him he lays on flat hard ground outside).

3) Is it cost effective? How many bales/bags do you use a week?

On this routine, 1 per stable per week or every other week depending on how clean each horse is. While in every night was using 2-3 per week except for cleanest horse ever who still only needed 1 bale each week! Very cost effective at £1.25 per bale, was previously using 1 bale shavings per stable per week at £7ish.

4) Is it time consuiming to muck out? (Can you deep litter etc.)

Nope, skip out 3 stables in about 10 minutes if that, full muck out takes about 10 minutes per box, don't like deep litter in any event.

5) Have you ever used or considered other types of bedding?

Have used hemp, shavings, wood chip, megasorb, shredded paper, cardboard. Have also seen boxes kept on wood pellets. Prefer my straw!

Here we are
For Fany:
1) What type of bedding do you use? How do you use that bedding? Rapport oilseed straw
2) Why do you use this type of bedding? She is very wet and dirty, it is absorbent
3) Is it cost effective? How many bales/bags do you use a week? 1-1 and a half bales.
4) Is it time consuiming to muck out? (Can you deep litter etc.) Rubber mats so don't deep litter, plus she has MF .
5) Have you ever used or considered other types of bedding?
Yes shavings and dust but they aren't absorbent enough. Hemcore but really needs deep litter and not suitable because of her MF and rubber matting.

For Captain
1) What type of bedding do you use? How do you use that bedding? Sawdust or shavings
2) Why do you use this type of bedding? economical and he is a very clean horse
3) Is it cost effective? How many bales/bags do you use a week? included in livery, very cheap at most a bale a week
4) Is it time consuiming to muck out? (Can you deep litter etc.) on rubber mats so don't want to deep litter, quick and easy to muck out
5) Have you ever used or considered other types of bedding?
He loves straw but not suitable for our mats.

Hope this helps.

1) Aubiose

2) Cleaner, more economical, more efficient, breaks down more easily on muck heap

3) one bale a week

4) Skip out once a day, full muck out once a week to take wet out etc. Time efficient rather than time consuming

5) Used to use shavings but would go through at least two bales a week and the bed still stank!

1) What type of bedding do you use? How do you use that bedding?
Wheat straw, deep littered

2) Why do you use this type of bedding?
Cheap - makes nice beds - can get it deep for my big horses

3) Is it cost effective? How many bales/bags do you use a week?
2.5 bales/horse/wk at £2/bale

4) Is it time consuiming to muck out? (Can you deep litter etc.)
takes about 10 mins/stable

5) Have you ever used or considered other types of bedding?

yes - use shavings for one horse as he eats the straw. about 3x as expensive as bedding him on straw. Takes 5 mins to muck out as he's deep littered too.

Have used aubiose, paper, sundown (shavings/straw mix) wood pellets before now.

This is for my college project, if you could spare a couple of mins just to answer these questions about your bedding:

1) What type of bedding do you use? How do you use that bedding?
Straw. Full daily muck-out.

2) Why do you use this type of bedding?
Required by Yard.

3) Is it cost effective? How many bales/bags do you use a week?
Probably not as she is a mucky mare, though okay for the two ponies
smile.gif
We usually buy one of the huge bales every two weeks, then top up via small bales if necessary.

4) Is it time consuiming to muck out? (Can you deep litter etc.)
Yes, no matter what method we use, Dizz is a mucky mare and takes forever to muck out. Only have a deep bed due to her having to be in - she has a bobbered pelvis.

5) Have you ever used or considered other types of bedding?
Yes, we prefer shavings but cannot use them at this Yard.

Thanks

Welcomes

1)EVA mats, shredded cardboard base in the wet patch, shavings on top. Semi-deep littered, skip out daily, do a full muck out and throw the whole bed, including banks, up at the weekend.
2) The shredded cardboard is free, much more absorbent than the shavings and keeps the wet held at the bottom of the bed with no seepage up into the top layer. Shavings is the best top layer bedding available on our yard (we have to buy from YO)
3) Relatively. I use 1-2 bales of shavings a week.
4) No, 10 mins to skip out in the week and about 20-30 to do a full muck at the weekend
5) Straw but too smelly and shredded straw but nowhere near as absorbent as shavings and not much cheaper.

1) Wood pellets, full daily muck out.
2) i find putting it in dry helps with having such a wet horse
3) bah, not for mr messy. is very cost effective for the cleaner pony though.
4) personally, i find it quick to muck out. i do two stables in about 10mins.
5) did use straw but wanted something absorbant. i find wood pellets much much better than straw.

1) I have 2 beds with rubber mats and a huge shavings bed on top and 1 of straw. shavings beds are "skipped monday to Friday - lifted completley on a Sat and new bedding put down - Sunday - bit of a mix - I move about a half of the bed. Straw bed is lifted every day
2)The 2 on shavings are BIG horses and I find that straw moves too much under them and they are HUGE stables - so the straw can easily be pushed from the centre. The one on straw is in a 12 x 14 stable and is only a light little un.
3)Once the shavings bed is set up I spend about the same on each of the 3 beds per week - ie 1 bag of shavings for each bed is £8 and 3 bales of straw is £9 - if the horses have been in longer due to the weather etc - i usually end up putting on 2 bags of shavings - but my beds are fit for a queen - I have OCD about my beds !
4) The straw bed is certainly quicker than the shavings beds when lifted, BUT the shavings beds are quicker to skip in the week.
5)Not really - we are limited to what we can use as we have to put it on the muck heap - but i have used Liverpool pellets but did not like the look of it - silly really as it is a cheap effective bedding

1) What type of bedding do you use? How do you use that bedding?
A mix of Easibed and shavings, on top of rubber matting. The easibed acts as an absorbent base and I then put a big fluffy bed of shavings on top
laugh.gif
The rubber matting is there just because it was already in the stable - I'd prefer it if it wasn't!

2) Why do you use this type of bedding?
It's the cleanest and easiest for my two mares.

3) Is it cost effective? How many bales/bags do you use a week?
I haven't had horses in stables in the last few years so I'm not sure how it compares to anything else but I don't seem to use as much as is recommended and it works fine.

4) Is it time consuiming to muck out? (Can you deep litter etc.)
It's deep littered so it takes about 15 or 20 mins to pick the poo out of 2 stables in the week - I take out a lot of the wet stuff at the weekends which takes about 45 mins for both.

5) Have you ever used or considered other types of bedding?
They were on straw for a week - they ate most of it and the rest of it absolutely stank!!!

1) What type of bedding do you use? How do you use that bedding? Shaving, On top of rubber mats, about 2" deep with banks
2) Why do you use this type of bedding? Easy to muck out, clean and keeps muck heap to a minimum!!
3) Is it cost effective? How many bales/bags do you use a week? 8 stables 1 to 2 bags per week per stable
4) Is it time consuiming to muck out? (Can you deep litter etc.) No - Really quick! I can do a full muck out of all stables in around 1 hour. Can deep litter but found it harder as I am a bit OCD with wet, dirty looking beds
grin.gif

5) Have you ever used or considered other types of bedding?
Have used straw (too much like hard work) hemp (Ok but more expensive)
Thanks

1) Straw
2) Its cheap and easy to dispose of
3) Very, 5 bales a week
4) No, takes 10 mins per stable
5) Shavings for the ponies when I can afford it

1. I have 3 on straw and 2 on shavings. Shavings beds come up twice a week, straw about 5 times a week, the rest of the time they are just skipped out.

2. Straw cos it's cheap, the 2 on shavings are both terrible bed eaters when on straw, and one of them gets colic from eating straw.

3. Approx 5 bales of straw a week and 1 1/2 - 2 shavings.

4. Not really time consuming, I get through them pretty quick but OH can take all day doing them, however there won't be a single bit of shavings or straw out of place when she has done!

5. I have used shredded paper for a bit where I used to work many years ago (not on my ponies). If money was no obeject I would probably have all mine on deep shavings beds.

1) What type of bedding do you use? How do you use that bedding?
Aubiose (hemp) plus wood pellets, mixed together. On top of rubber mats, about 4 inches deep.
2) Why do you use this type of bedding?
Very good for messy horses (absorbent and supportive), doesnt stick to rugs, easy to use (pours out not unseparating shavings lumps!, lower dust, rots quickly.
3) Is it cost effective? How many bales/bags do you use a week?
Still expensive but better than shavings, Aubiose goes a long way but is £11.50 bale, wood pellets about £6,50. Use about 1 bale Aubiose and 2 wood pellets per horse per week.
4) Is it time consuiming to muck out? (Can you deep litter etc.)
Veyr much quicker than shavings which were horrendous, and yes you can easily deep litter tho I dont apart from bottom layer.
5) Have you ever used or considered other types of bedding?
Yes have used both straw and shavings as used to be on livery yard and they were the only options. Straw cheap but messy and wet and heavy. Shavings expensive as got thru a lot, stuck to rugs, blew everywhere and kicked everywhere. didnt rot quickly

1) Straw. Big big banks.
2) Produce our own straw, parent's always used this type, need big banks, straw works well, easy to muck out.
3) Very cost effective. I use the big rectangle farm bales, about 1/2 of one of those a week per stable.
4) I could deep litter but I don't. Takes me 5mins to muck out and bank up, leave floors to dry during day and put banks down at night, easy peasy.
5) No. As mentioned, we produce straw on the farm, so it doesn't cost me anything. I CANNOT muck out shavings in less than half an hour, and I HATE the fact that I can't get big banks from them.

1) What type of bedding do you use? How do you use that bedding?

Straw

2) Why do you use this type of bedding?

We can use as much as we like as its included in the field rent

3) Is it cost effective? How many bales/bags do you use a week?

Horses live out 24/7 apart from the odd day in when there is a shoot on the farm so use less than a bale a week.

4) Is it time consuiming to muck out? (Can you deep litter etc.)

15 mins if I do it properly after a day in. 5 mins if I just skip out after a couple of hours in.

5) Have you ever used or considered other types of bedding?

Used to use shavings when had to buy in bedding but happy with straw as its included and don't have to muck out that often.

1) What type of bedding do you use? How do you use that bedding?

Deep litter straw (lovely clean barley straw) with a bit of sawdust in to help base. Straw is lifted every day all droppings removed and any very wet straw. About a feed scoop of scattered on top of base if needed. Mucked out end of winter.

2) Why do you use this type of bedding?

Get free straw, shavings help use less straw and deep littering helps save time and make a more solid bed (bedding doesn't move around)

3) Is it cost effective? How many bales/bags do you use a week?

Use about 2 slices of straw a day, feed scoop of sawdust (@ £3.50 a bag which is about 2/3 rds size of normal shavings bags) Used one bag of shavings and two sawdust bags in 4 months last year.

4) Is it time consuiming to muck out? (Can you deep litter etc.)

Takes about 20 mins but do it slowly and well! Horse burys poo!

5) Have you ever used or considered other types of bedding?

I like big deep shavings beds but is too expensive, wanted wood pellets as base but don't need enough to order a pallet full.

1) What type of bedding do you use? How do you use that bedding?
Bedmax shavings, fully mucked out every day

2) Why do you use this type of bedding?
The whole yard is on it. Dust free is essential

3) Is it cost effective? How many bales/bags do you use a week?
About 1-1.5 a week with my last mare- some horses are using 3
shocked.gif

4) Is it time consuiming to muck out? (Can you deep litter etc.)
Found it was too wet to semi deep litter with the big wet horses, takes about 10-15 mins per bed.

5) Have you ever used or considered other types of bedding?
Yes, used flax/bliss in the past. Flax was soo expensive and beds never looked as nice as shavings. I hate mucking out straw.

1) What type of bedding do you use? How do you use that bedding?
horse 1
rubber mats
horse 2+3
rubber mats with deep littered straw on top
2) Why do you use this type of bedding?
horse 1
he gets allergic dermatitis from the beddings available from the yard, i used to use aubious but its no longer available
horse 2+3
it makes a good deep bed that is easy to much out, takes about 30 mins to do all 3
3) Is it cost effective? How many bales/bags do you use a week?
horse 1
very cost effective, no bedding on top
horse 2+3
very cost effective get through 1 bale a week
4) Is it time consuiming to muck out? (Can you deep litter etc.)
no both are very quick to do, straw is deep littered so just skipped out daily and fresh straw added, rubber matting just needs a good scrape and clean down
5) Have you ever used or considered other types of bedding?
i used to use shaving but they were getting to expensive (£10 a bale for fine very dusty shavings), i used to use aubious but it is no longer availble as an option from the yard

1) What type of bedding do you use? How do you use that bedding?
Straw, full muck out every day.
2) Why do you use this type of bedding?
Cheap to use and not many small particle's to get into his bad eye. He also gets vets itchy on some types of shavings.
3) Is it cost effective? How many bales/bags do you use a week?
Very cost effective, only spent £24 on bedding since november (large bales). And use one section every 3 days.
4) Is it time consuiming to muck out? (Can you deep litter etc.)
Can be sometimes but not often. I could deep litter but choose not to
smile.gif

5) Have you ever used or considered other types of bedding?
Have been on various makes of shavings but they either made him very itchy and/or the bits would irritate his eye. He was on wood pellets for a short while but again they irritated his eye.

1. Straw, full daily muck out
2. Free of charge included in livery
3. About 1/2 bales per week
4. Easy to muck out and can deep litter if short of time
5. Did use shavings but stick to everything and expensive
