My friend has just taken on a Springer bitch from a family member as she was not being given the time she deserved. She is obviously used to being the boss and is taking the pee on the lead and growled when asked to get off the bed! Friend is not scared or put off by this but she is obviously going to be shown who is in charge!
Can anyone reccomend a good book to help, she is thinking about taking her to training classes too so is looking for something in Lincolnshire!

Never used a book myself but I am sure someone will recommend one, well done to your friend for taking this girlie on and being prepared to set some boundaries.

Training classes are also a good idea

I would suggest getting a behaviorist in or heading to some classes over a book.

These things are somewhat delicate and doing it without help could make the situation worse and end up with someone getting hurt.

In the meantime lots of exercise.

From what I can gather she is currently getting 3 walks a day but pulls like a train on the lead. Friend said she doesn't feel that she would actually bite (hopefully) but she is used to getting her own way so she wants to stamp that out pretty sharpish!
She really has come from a hellish home. Background is that sister split from husband and he took the dog. He was feeding her human leftovers (cornish pasties for example

) and she was getting sod all exercise. It is bound to take her time to settle but I think a trainer is a good idea. I suggested a book just as a bit of background reading really. She has never had a bigger dog before so its all very new.

I'd also suggest a houseline to start with, so she can be encouraged off the furniture without having to take her collar, which she could find threatening and which will also place a hand in harm's way should she snap.

The Dogs Trust recommended such a line for the early days of settling some rescues in.

I would also look into books about settling rescues in as background reading as in effect that it what you sound like you're dealing with.
