Can anyone tell me why

when it comes to horseflies the more horses are moving the less likely they will get as many horseflies....

rwhen schooling my horses faces are nearlyfly free, when competing (trying to win a jump-off ;) ther is not even the slightest hint of flies existing, wondering babout in the field they are smothered in them even with fly masks/spray...even in the stable although less than out in the field there are more flies than exercising, in fact i don't think i saw/swatted a single horsefly in a whole hour of flatwork today :D

Hot Topic. My own horses are stable during the day out of the way of the flies, then they are out in the paddock at night with fly masks. No work for them until the heat is over, even if it is September. I guess my horses are more fortunate than most.

Your poor horses - being forced to stand in a stable all day . . .

Whereas other more fortunate horses and ponies are free to choose to be in the shade or stand in the sun at their leisure.

Im not working any of my horses at the moment due to distance and a young baby, but they sure as hell are not stuck in a stable, they have been coping very well out in the field, however, I have been on endurance rides and competing on days like this, ( I also dont see how in a stable is away from flies, unless you have every part of your stable netted???)
I know my horse, and she did 15 miles in 30 degrees and was ready to go again, she did sweat a bit on faster parts of the ride, but soon dried when walking, main concern is how the ground is.

Stop being so god damn cruel to your animal, you selfish man (OR WOMAN) leave it in the field and dont shove man (OR WOMAN) made products on it, that is so dreadfully cruel......:rolleyes::rolleyes:

My boy has gone into a decline because I haven't had time to work him this week (15 hour days but now thankfully over) but will be ecstatic to be working tonight - he loves his work and the wash off after and definitely wouldn't want to be in his stable. I am evil and cruel for not working him this week...

people are competing in this weather?
Its TOO HOT. and the flies
very early morning riding is ok, but to travel a horse and compete it at showing/jumping/endurance etc seems so so wrong and unkind,

If they are fit and well prepared the heat won't bother them and they probably have less flies around them when out and competing than trying to graze in the paddock.

SO THE POOR HORSES AND PONIES HAVE TO SUFFER BECAUSE OF MAN'S [AND WOMAN'S] DESIRES..................................................

I'm guessing this is a purposeful wind up?

I competed on Sunday - eventing and yes it was blooming hot. However, Horse was stood in the shade when not being ridden, sponged with cold water constantly before and after each phase and even during warmup, and provided with lots of water to drink. He didn't seem as bothered by the heat as I was (wasn't appropriate to sponge me off!! :p).

People are entitled to ride or not ride in the heat as they see fit, but some of us are happy to ride to the conditions and take extra care of our horses to ensure they can cope with the conditions. At least I know my horse is fit, well and in great shape and not at risk of laminitis.

Alrighty then. This has escalated. Despite mine working they are coming in a few hours a day. And watching the 2 other horses who are out with shade I'm happy in my decision. The ones outside are not standing still and sweated up. The barn is cooler especially with a fan at the end. Having said that most of their time is outside.

Horsesforever, it really isn't cruel to keep horses fit and aclimatised to the weather. Just becauae you think it is doesn't make it fact or everyone else cruel.

Time to bring mine in as they're at the gate. They will all have their heads hanging out over their chains enjoying the fan.

Terri

horsesforever i presume you sit in a cold cupboard the entire time its hot....................................thought not!
of course you dont, you carry on your normal life, do your normal work, get a bit hot, have a cool shower etc.

im sure 99% of horses would be happier doing no more than eating and sh***ing, but we give them feed, tend to to teeth and feet, provide shelter and medical attention and in return expect them to do a job!

good honest sweat is not a bad thing.

get over yourself.

Rubbish H4E, don't be such a wuss. How do think arabians have coped for millenia in the desert?

I don't compete much at moment due to no transport & bringing my 6yr old on, but the heat wouldn't stop me unless my horse was struggling. He is a very sweaty horse warm or cold weather. While I am not out much I have been riding early as it's very nice for us both, plus gives me the day to enjoy the weather & do things :).

My horses are still in their MW all neck turnouts :p;)

I have two twenty year old tbs, one is retired and the other was working until a couple of weeks ago, when a change of field and subsequent stuffing made him very footy (uh oh :(), he then sustained a bruised sole and has been off since. He looks awful, even worse than the retired horse for looking saggy. He will be going back to work next week!

The retired horse doesn't cope well with heat, he sweats loads; he also doesn't cope with the cold. This is probably due to old age setting in and his system not being up to much any more. The other one, however, grows a huge winter coat, never seems to feel the cold (even when he lost his rug whilst clipped and standing in a freezing field) and is cool to the touch, even when standing in the sun! Wish I could do that. He loves summer!

The cob sweats buckets. When he's stood in. Even though it is cooler in the barn, he doesn't get enough air flow to evaporate the sweat and is miserable.

I remove fly masks at night, the nuisance flies have gone and I think they restrict vision too much and I am yet to see the horses have a problem with moths.

There's always someone complaining, too hot, too wet, too many flies etc. So when horses worked for a living they had the summer off? No-one seemed to care about Mr Murrey running around a court in 40 degree heat on sunday.

i was eventing on sunday (day off mon) traveled to a lesson on tuesday and then went showjumping on wednesday didn't have any problems at all
it was rather warm , i just made sure i offered my horse a drink more regularly and kept him in the shade where possible , i also try to keep him damp by sponging him down between classes

Its been in the 50's here (Celsius) horses have not been bothered at all, Ive been given free grazing down my track, and Im the one sweating walking them down there, they are fine, though Im not riding as Im the one finding it too hot...
