Our mini schnauzer developed a limp on his front foot a few days ago. Took him to vet and he had an infection and degradation of the paw. The vet is concerned he may have bone cancer , we will get results of tests mid next week. He is currently on antibiotics and pain meds. He has lost a tiny bit of weight but not a huge amount and seems happy enough although he is still limping. So please send vibes for a good outcome.

Results are in . He has osteomyelitis , he is going to need 4-6 weeks more of antibiotics. There were two strains of bacterial infection found one of which is resistant to his current antibiotics. Hopefully if he responds well to new medication it should halt progress and no further treatment. Treatment could involve amputation of digits if it can’t be stopped but that is not necessary now. They don’t think there is cancer present. So Thankyou for all the vibes, it has been a nervous few days.

An update, he has completed a months antibiotics but foot is still swollen. Has been prescribed a further two weeks and is on painkillers. Reassess in two weeks if still no improvement we have to consider amputation of digit after further X-rays to see if infection has spread. I wish it was better news.

Sorry he's not better, but it's not the worst news. Now they know which antibiotics won't work, there will be a chance of things improving. Keeping everything crossed for a happy outcome.

Sorry it's not better news but thank you for updating. This forum is like a giant encyclopedia so it may well help others in your situation in the future.

Best of luck.

Thank you, if anyone has any experience of digit removal it would be good to hear. I am struggling to get my head around the concept.

Hi
My Doberman has had her toe removed about 2 weeks now from a similar situation.
I honestly don’t think she gives a hoot
She got her first monitored run around the garden last night and she was running completely fine and happy
She’s 30kg so the healing time is slow as she puts a LOT of weight on that foot

Not completely healed yet but stitches are out
She still has a bit of infection in her paw pads but it’s healing nicely with cream
We soak her paw once a day for 5 minutes atm

appetite may go down the drain for first few days so may need to feed chicken and rice (or fish and rice as my girl is allergic)
Will be very sore first few days
We got a play pen for pups to put her in to help reduce movement
Bandage came off a week after surgery (stitches still in) so we had to be very careful
The wound was over heating in bandages so had to breathe
foot was still leaky so had to keep her clean
Her foot goes in a strong freezer bag for toilet time to keep it clean
