Am pretty sure someone jumped bareback BSJA years back (think the girth broke and saddle fell off) and there was no reason to eliminate them because there was nothing in the rule book - not sure about now tho!
Yep as usual Weezy is right, I think BSJA were the last ones to insist on a saddle! Although whether you must have stirrups is an entirely different thing surely?
50. Saddles
Saddles must be worn and be of English or Continental style and must be brown, black, grey or navy.
Stirrup leathers and irons are compulsory and must be attached to the saddle and used in the conventional
way. The riders boots must not be fixed to the stirrup iron by mechanical means. Western style or brightly
coloured saddles are not permitted It is permissible to ride side saddle. Saddle covers are not permitted
except during riding-in. A gel pad seat saver is permitted, provided that it is unobtrusive and matches the
colour of the saddle. Other types of seat saver including sheepskin/fur fabric are not permitted unless
written dispensation has been obtained from the British Dressage Office. Treeless saddles are permitted.
Aha, I only remembered the bit about the stirrups not being attached to the boots!
Not to worry, not something in a month Sundays that I would contemplate!

You may think this strange and I think you have to use a saddle but why?

I think you do...
Do you think its the girdle though thats causing the problems?? I do know a place that has 100's of dressage saddle from new to really ropey second hand
... I don't mind taking you there... I managed to get Teddy a brand new Cliff Barnsby for £360!!! Which Mats magic bum hasn't whinged about (well not to me anyway!)
What about those 'saddles' which are basically a roller with stirrup bars?? http://www.treelesssaddles.co.uk/
Thats a saddle! but bareback! If those are allowed Ill be getting one asap as saddles hurt my back
Shame about the BSJA stopping bareback jumping. I remember seeing someone YEARS ago (I think a very young Michael Whitaker) jump bareback at Harwood Hall - think the horse was called "Red" - it looked very impressive but not something I'd ever fancy as my horse is like a barrel & you'd just roll round her !!
There always used to be a bareback jumping class at unaff shows when I was a kid (showing my age now I think). Also there was up until recently, and may still be, a bareback puissance class at Olympia though I'm not sure which bit of the BSJA rules governs this (might be the same section which says 'ladies hair must be secured above the collar - unless you are famous then you are allowed a very long swishy ponytail right down to your bum'!!)
Didn't they used to do a bareback puissance at HOYS or Olympia? I'm sure that 'when I was young' in the 80's I watched the likes of Harvey Smith, David Broome etc doing it
