Am pretty sure someone jumped bareback BSJA years back (think the girth broke and saddle fell off) and there was no reason to eliminate them because there was nothing in the rule book - not sure about now tho!

There used to be a number of bareback competitions my auntie said (unaffiliated) as she used to compete in them when she was small.

I assume you mean english disciplines, but you can compete in reining without a saddle (or a bridle, if you're feeling brave!)

Yep as usual Weezy is right, I think BSJA were the last ones to insist on a saddle! Although whether you must have stirrups is an entirely different thing surely?

Do you think its the girdle though thats causing the problems?? I do know a place that has 100's of dressage saddle from new to really ropey second hand
... I don't mind taking you there... I managed to get Teddy a brand new Cliff Barnsby for £360!!! Which Mats magic bum hasn't whinged about (well not to me anyway!)

Or a felt pad type saddle- I used to show shetties in them, just a felt pad, which you sit on and hang stirrups from LOL!

Shame about the BSJA stopping bareback jumping. I remember seeing someone YEARS ago (I think a very young Michael Whitaker) jump bareback at Harwood Hall - think the horse was called "Red" - it looked very impressive but not something I'd ever fancy as my horse is like a barrel & you'd just roll round her !!

There always used to be a bareback jumping class at unaff shows when I was a kid (showing my age now I think). Also there was up until recently, and may still be, a bareback puissance class at Olympia though I'm not sure which bit of the BSJA rules governs this (might be the same section which says 'ladies hair must be secured above the collar - unless you are famous then you are allowed a very long swishy ponytail right down to your bum'!!)

Didn't they used to do a bareback puissance at HOYS or Olympia? I'm sure that 'when I was young' in the 80's I watched the likes of Harvey Smith, David Broome etc doing it
