Just wondering.

My horse was branded at around 6months with his breed stamp and number. You can hardly see it (I mean you have to really really look to make it out).

Its all in his passport and stamped so can I get it redone?

Nope, think it's illegal except for Exmoors and possibly New Forests? Freezemarked maybe, if you can find someone with the right brands but not hot branding, which I assume is what he has?

And even if you could find someone to freezemark, I doubt it could be done in the same place as the old one due to scarring.

yeah its a hot brand. I know horses are branded till at gradings and stuff for his breed. Is it just illegal to rebrand?

Maybe I'm ahead of myself! Thought it was banned already. Still don't think it would be possible to go over the old one. Have you tried getting hold of the breed society? They should know. Someone in breeding or comp. riders on here might too.

ETA. It's banned in Scotland, not England and Wales yet. Unless this is out of date

They usually become more visible when they are changing to/have thier summer coat.
Not often can they be seen when hairy.
Can't really see the point of rebranding myself.

I really wouldn't want to put the horse through it again. Hellish pain for the sake of the owners vanity.... :(
Freezebrands are proven to be less painful and are easier to see if you wanted some form of id?

You want to burn your horse so that other people can see how good he is?

Words fail me.

My Westfalian's brand is also indistinct. I would not dream of burning him deliberately to make it more clear, I don't think it should ever have been done in the first place. I'd like you to come here and see him, at 7, panic when I try to get a hand-held heat lamp anywhere near him.

Perhaps hot branding will over take tatoos in humans? Mmm, wonder why it wont take off?

I'm afraid I just cannot see how inflicting pain cos it 'looks nice' can be justified in any way shape or form!

I actually like them and its part of his identification in his passport

LC has 2 brands. I was there when it was done. He didn't like it much, but it certainly wasn't 'hellish pain' and he healed very quickly and easily. That said, I wouldn't bother redoing them and he's due a third brand but I won't bother with that either.

I have no problem with branded. Horse is hot shod and has no issues! You wouldnt know he had a brand unless you really really look close.

If it cant be done it cant I was just wondering :)

If it wasn't for your post count I'd be calling you a troll.

Are you serious?

If you are, can I suggest that you try the difference between cutting your nails and cutting off the end of your finger?

Why do you assume that it didn't hurt? Because he didn't react much? Once it's done, what can he do??? Surely you have burnt yourself on an oven or with an iron? It hurst us like hell, why should a burn deep enough to destroy hair follicles not hurt a horse the same way?

I don't think it hurt much because he didn't react much but I wouldn't have expected him to because a severe burn such as one caused by branding will destroy the nerve endings. Look it up if you like.
I'm not pro-branding, per se, I just don't think it's such a big deal.

I find the whole idea of hot branding barbaric. The thought that you want to get it re-done to make it look nicer is utterly sickening.

I burned my knuckles last week and they are still hurting now. You seriously think it's OK to inflict that on your horse simply because you like the look of branding?

I can't believe this post is real, I really can't. At least I sincerely HOPE it's not real.

Not because it looks nicer it because he would mass up to his papers as at the moment you cant see it. I have dealt with many horses that have had hot brands and seen it done at gradings and ive not seen an issue. Ive seen horses react worse to jabs.

Anyway this isnt a pro branding/anti branding thread its just me wondering

We had an oldenburg foal branded a few years ago and I have to say he reacted far more to the microchip than the brand. Even then I'd never consider getting a brand re-done on an adult horse and I don't think there's a need to brand foals any more.

Have you had a burn that deep and felt what happens when the nerves regrow?

Why on earth would a horse feel it any differently from us? I suppose it helps justify burning horses if you can convince yourself that they don't feel it like we do :(

Having experienced the pain of 2nd degree burns I can say wholeheartedly it really is 'hellish pain'

I have also seen horses being hot branded, some react violently, some barely at all (except for very obvious amounts of tension)

I have also seen lots being freeze branded inc two of my own, all either stood quietly, ate or in my horses case turned his head to watch

At any rate, I know which I would choose to be banned outright.

Certainly re branding because it 'looks nice' and believing it doesn't hurt him shows a huge lack of empathy with your animal.
