Can you get a horse rebranded?

For cptrayes (can't quote on phone).

It was a bit of an ordeal for the poor foal and for us because the vet didn't speak english and never even tried to communicate with us. We had no idea what was going to happen next and really we were only at the disk inspection for the breeder's sake and to get the passport issued.

First he pulled a large clump of tail hair out with pliers, then did the microchip and the brand last. He reacted most to the microchip and the companion pony I was holding tried to make a swift exit during the branding.

I realise that everyone else will be giving serious sensible answers but.......every time I read this title I keep thinking of a horse using saatchi and saatchi to improve his image ,or perhaps like when they changed the name of marathon bars to snickers (fgs why?)....sorry .

Being in pain for life and pain for a brand is very different though

why would you want to put him through any pain at all? KWPNs aren't branded. There is no necessity to see the brand other than that you want other people to know that you have a branded horse. What a horrible reason to burn a horse :(

OP has said several times it is to keep in line with his passport. Oldenbergs have a number with their brand. With loosing two horses recently im sure she will do anything necessary to stop another potentially being stolen.

But this is nonsense. KWPNs aren't branded at all and still have passports. My own Wesfalian passported horse's brand is indistinct and it doesn't bother me at all.If it's to stop him being stolen then a freeze mark will be a far more effective deterrent. The brand, even with the number, is not unique to the horse.

I can't find another ref than yours for doing this because she doesn't want him stolen, have I missed it?

I could say the same about you.
The majoirty of stud books require foals to be branded upon inspection.

Yes thats why I wanted it redone so he is correct to his description and number in his passport and with the oldenburg studbook

KWPN, at least as high a breed standard, do not brand.

If his number does not match his passport then it's not his passport. You can,t just change his brand to make it match.

CPT - I 'think' NBC is suggesting that she wants the brand to match the passport in that, she wants it to be visible and so able to match it with the passport by eye. I believe it can't be seen currently.

For what it's worth I am all for freeze marking over branding but that's another kettle ;)

I'd agree with what someone said earlier re it would prob be very difficult to get the brand in the right place, and suggest that you also might not see a difference given that the scar tissue is already there, but not visible under a coat.

given that there are so many other forms of horse ID these days I wouldn't really see re branding as at all necessary tbh.

If branding is such a good idea and the stud books that require it have such 'high' standards, then why on earth do they use a system which becomes unrecognisable in such a short time? Rather than requiring the horse to be re-branded, surely they should by now be using unique identifiers, which the horse already has, that is why they are on the passports. As for some of the unpleasant personal comments, I think some posters should remember that it is only a few weeks ago they were posting apologies for past rudeness

The brand matches the passport its just very faint hence I asked. I dont want him branded to match the passport thats silly!

Then why do you want him rebranded? I truly do not understand why you want to do this apart from so that other people can see it.

I am in exactly the same situation as you. I have a Westfalian branded horse by a grand prix dressage stallion whose brand is indistinct. It does not worry me at all. His passport still identifies him. His brand does not identify him. I know he is he 18th foal born at his stud in his year, or at least I think that's what the 18 means. But if you do not have his place or year of birth, the brand does not tell you which horse he is. I have also owned two KWPNs also by grand prix fathers, showjumpers, and KWPNs are never branded. No-one in Holland feels the need to burn a horse to identify it.

So, why do you want it done, I genuinely do not understand?

Yeah, I dont understand either why you want it done. My Luso x is branded according to his passport but I cant see any sign of it on his thigh and the numbers on his neck actually seem to read "RIP" at certain times of year which is a bit weird! Id never have it redone. Ive got to have him freezemarked next month for loss of use, which Im freaking out about. I definately would never put my horses through branding or freezemarking if it could be avoided.
