I have also asked questions on the HOPE facebook page earlier this morning, and received no reply. .

as you stated you have only been on the - dartmoor update page, - i am thinking you added your questions to that page ???
i cant seem to find any questions from you on the up date page ?

also, just because you didnt get a reply straight away, you thought you would get your answers here ??? maybe the ladies who could help answer any questions you have were a little too busy doing other things and not sat at the computer all day long ?

i am still waiting for you to let us all know what ponies have the deformaties that you have mentioned in earlier threads.

I have been on both pages and asked questions-still none have been answered. And I asked on here as there were people online here which were from those pages. IMO if you're asking people to support a charity, you should be able to at least answer a few questions.

Are you wanting me to comment on those pictures or post links on to here?

If you make comments under the pictures on the Facebook pages which can in any way be seen as "negative" I think it will cause a bit of upset!

You'll be seen as the big bad meanie being unkind about the cute ponies. Rather than offering advice about future issues the foals might need help addressing.

I'm concerned about conversations like the following on the fb groups:

"Katy: Below me is a field around 2 acres, knee deep in grass well fenced owned by my land lady, think it is unused so will ask some questions.

Dartmoor rescue of 25+ ponies: katy that sounds like a brilliant idea :)"

I really think the organisation should make it clear that adopting a feral pony involves a lot more than just asking your landlady if you can stick it in a field "knee deep in grass"! Presumably they will be checking Katy's experienced, and the pony will not live alone, poor thing, that it will have water, shelter and proper care? But the fb group does give the impression the field's enough ("a brilliant idea") so it's no wonder people here are concerned.

I did see that comment too and it rang a few alarm bells in my head. Glad someone else has picked up on this!

I was going to comment on the pictures saying what it looked like to me (although I am no expert and don't know every defect/deformity there is going I will admit!). To be honest-there is a picture on the updates page of a few ponies with serious defects-if these haven't been noticed then I'm not quite sure where the owners/rescue are looking because they are painfully obvious. And if a vet and farrier haven't already picked up on them-well is there any hope really?

To be fair, not all vets have a lot of expertise with horses, and perhaps may just come out to microchip a batch for passports. They might not even be asked to comment on the foals' overall state. And do you think these little things will ever have met a farrier yet?

I would honestly hope the ones who have been rehomed for quite a while (and there are a few of those on there with these issues) will have seen a farrier.

Many years ago I knew of a couple near Liverpool who had no horse knowledge (in fact the wife was scared of them) but had a barn with a stable in it and a tiny piece of land. They had a little girl aged 2, whose granny went to Wales on holiday and “rescued” a Welsh Mountain foal from the meatman whle she was there as a present for the little girl.

The foal was put in the stable and sometimes the tiny strip of land and lived with the family for the next 18 months. During that time, the couple split up and the wife was too scared to do anything much for the pony. It was a traumatic time for the family and no-one seemed to think of the pony in their drama.

At this point, the pony got out, and wandered into the neighbouring riding school’s field where its condtion was spotted and steps were taken to save it.
It had nearly starved to death. It was full of worms and its little swollen belly stuck out through the most incredibly visible ribcage I’ve ever seen. Every bone in its body seems to be visible, in fact. Its growth was so impared by the neglect that its little front legs appeared to grow out of one joint. If you leant on it it fell over. It had been incorrectly gelded and was a rig.

The couple agreed to let the pony be taken away and re-homed, which was done, but the poor little mite would never have a very healthy or useful life . It went to another family, but hopefully a knowledgable one this time. I don't know what became of it after that.

That little girl’s gran meant to be kind by “rescuing” the foal. The couple weren't intentionally cruel, just knew nothing about ponies were too wrapped up in their own problems to see what was happening to him.

I do worry some of these Dartmoor hill ponies could end up in a similar state.

Youngfarmer, just curious really what would you suggest if a foal was cow hocked, currently very bum high. What would you suggest if a horses atlas was misaligned, what would you do with a pigeon toed foal it is 11 months old. I need to point out these are not trick questions these are things I have had to deal with, I always like to see what other people would have done, as you have said about your background I am just curious. Funny enough all of these problems are not the 2 dmhp I have.

**** the comment about the field is for any that are not homed, and can go there untill a suitable home is found via the checks that are done.

i do think that if you was to add any comment to the photos about what you 'think' is wrong with any of the foals, then im sure you are going to get shot down for it rather quickly and i dont think what with everything going on is a very good idea. BUT i do wish to no what ones you feel are deformed etc, so if you could send me a PM here, i would be very greatful,

and again, i have been on both pages today, and i can not see any comments or questions from you. maybe if you could tell me your fb name then that may help me find them,

I've asked a few questions on FB - and all have been answered. But not everyone is online all the time. So maybe a bit of patience?

I'm also curious as to which animals you think have problems.

Can you comment on here which ones are the problems??

it seems that youngfarmer does not wish to reply, as he/she has been on this forum/chat since i have asked my questions, and nothing back,
as far as i can tell , there have been no questions asked by this person on the facebook page, so there will be no replies, and there are not that many photos on the up date page, so i am slightly confused as to why the comments about them being deformed, but with no reply from youngfarmer i am unable to comment, - i would still like to no what ones s/he feels are deformed out of the ones that are looking for new homes,

some people agree with the foals going to slaughter / zoo food, others dont, i think we will all have to agree to disagree . if you want to help the facebook page is there, if you dont want to help, please dont shoot down the ones who do,

I don't really think anyone wants to shoot you down. Most people here would respect that the people organising this are well-intended and no doubt putting in a lot of time and money to rescue the ponies.

The concern is that their attempts may be misguided and possibly make the situation worse, for all the reasons given.

I refer you back to the story I posted earlier about the Welsh pony I once knew, "rescued" from slaughter by a well-meaning family, who through their ignorance then caused it enormous suffering over a long period of time. Sometimes, being humanely killed isn't the worse thing that can happen to an pony.

I also think the repeated mention of the zoo is emotive and irrelevant. Once it's dead, what does it matter what happens to an animal's remains?

I'm 100 % behind what you are saying, apart from the last bit. Just think about about those people that have bred their own horses and kept them for life 30years plus. They are the ones that cannot bear to see their beloved faithful friend being carved up and sent for zoo meat, but rather pay the price and have them individually cremated and placed in a wood casket and put in the conservatory :p

I actually haven't been on here (as in using the page) for quite a while, but have been linked to this forum a few times when searching for research for university. So no, I haven't had time to reply. Although I will be going to the relevant people on facebook and asking them questions-including the owners. However, I had posted questions on both facebook pages and got no reply. Funny that 99% of those comments have been removed now though and only 1 remains, which still hasn't been answered! Anyway, as I said-I'll ask the relevant people on facebook through PM, or for the ones who I can't PM, on pictures or directed to them on the page

Sorry to drag this back up again, but I really haven't had time to reply and have just some spare time now so decided to :)

Yes of course but what I meant is it doesn't matter to the horse! These ponies aren't someone's loved pets, the only important thing as I see it is that they are treated humanely. If genuinely good homes aren't available, I don't think it matters what happens to their remains if they are pts.
