Canada takes the initiative - helmets for ALL riders in dr comps in 2012.

not the most logical argument BB-do you wear your breeches out and about? I mean i REALLY love my eurostar breeches with blingy bits, but i dont wear them down the pub! so as much as i love my top hat, no i will not be wearing it to work etc.

how odd.

Well it was tongue in cheek!!! Personally no, but the equestrian fashion makes a strong come back every so often and includes breeches, boots, jackets.

The thing about personal choice is, unless one is a hermit, it isn't personal choice.

Well said Mrs M and I agree totally. I think its only a good thing, and I am sure we will get used to seeing riders in tails and helmets - its not a bad look after all.

I will stop now before I get pulled off my soapbox, but people who dont wear riding hats whilst riding are just plain idiots. When I hear the utter rubbish about 'my horse never bucks, rears etc etc' I cringe inwardly and shudder. Their choice etc, not their family's choice when they are fired off and are not wearing a hat and their family have to either cope with losing a loved member of that family, or caring for a vegetable. Let alone the cost to the NHS ........

If someone can make a western hat with a helmet within it, you'd think someone could do the same with a top hat, no?

They have made on and I think it looks great.
Sadly it also sets one back £2000 which for most amateurs is just that little bit tooooooo frivolous.

Do many riders in the UK wear a harnessed velvet hat (to BSEN/PAS levels) with a tail-coat for either eventing or dressage....I was trying to think if I have seen anyone....as am thinking of using this combination next year?

Not seen a harnessed velvet hat, but at Burghley there were a number of riders (mainly the US/Canadian riders if I remember) who wore tails and SJer style hats.

If I have the opportunity to wear tail coat, I will be donning it with my GPA. I think there are a number of others who are following suit also.

Canada also has an advantage as it can play the "universal health care" card and there are already huge taxes on booze and tobacco, relative to many other countries, with an eye to offsetting their medical effects.

we should have that advantage too I guess?

I thought insurance would drive the whole thing as well. I was expecting farriers, vets, instructors and show organisers to get their hands forced by insurance requirements.

No doubt it is to come. There will be a case at some point and then it will snowball.

I find it hard as it gets difficult to know where to draw the line, but having been involved in lots of 'dangerous' sports, this world of equestrianism is the one with the least apparent regard for making it as safe as possible. Maybe it's its heritage.
