So, I'm considering cancelling my insurance policy for my horse this year: he's just turned 25 has been long long retired due to injury so only insured for a nominal sum plus vets bills, however there is a £500 excess on the vet cover, so I'm thinking that at his age there's not much point having the cover; over £500 is likely to be quite invasive treatment, which I wouldn't put him through (thinking colic surgery) up to that; minor injury or illness I'd happily pay for, is there anything else you guys think I should be taking into consideration before cancel? Policy is due in August. I guess I can take out BHS membership for PL cover, although he's at a livery yard & they have their own cover for EL/ PL so that may not be necessary
thanks

Just make sure you have personal and public liability. At his age I'd honestly just try and have some savings incase of the worst and he needs a simple course of anti biotics or something (ie mine got cellulitis which came to just short of £300!) Again, like yours my excess was £500 (Petplan by any chance?) no idea why as I'd never claimed before. When I did claim it was over the course of the year for a very serious nasty case of lamintis which needed various tests and xrays and remedial shoeing with follow up checks every few months. That was the only occasion I've ever claimed insurance. They then have given a list of exemptions as long as my arm so decided at my horse's age of 18, I will just have a savings account for him.

I am a BHS member so I have the Third Party Insurance (don't rely on anyone else's insurance for your animal!) but I gave up paying insurance for my horse several years ago.

Better to have some savings and have a serious thought about what would happen if your horse did get colic or a severe injury. It used to be about £5,000 for colic surgery but I guess it is nearer £10,000 now. Friend had a horse with suspected colic and when she took it to the hospital the first thing they asked her for was her credit card and first payment. (Actually horse didn't need an operation and she had a refund).

For older horses you can only insure for "external injuries" so an accident in the field that needed stiches, or an X ray I suppose. Not sure about laminitis and definitely not colic.

I have a petplan veteran policy for my 29yo. It costs £9.22 per month and I have a £145 excess and vets fees of £1000 for lameness, accident, death and disposal. I have made a couple of claims for lameness. I keep it going because of how cheap it is.

A lot of people don't realise that there is third party insurance on their house insurance policy, so you could check that out before paying for more.

Third party/ public liability/ personal liability in this context all mean the same thing.

And our insurance advisors tell us that the more companies that cover you so could be home insurance, BHS membership and maybe WHW, encourages them all to fight over who’s got to pay out.

That's interesting. Do you have a lot of exclusions?

That sounds very reasonable.

This sounds like a good option; he's with petplan at the moment, so I'll speak with them when my renewal comes through,
many thanks for all the replies
