just a light session for CS, but even that shows progress-the warm up is not literally just that, limbering up.he comes out off the leg, straight and supple with no reminders needed (i know these can always be worked on, but relative to his age and level of schooling they are on the button).

camera sadly died before we got any pics of the lateral work etc, but he did a lovely clean neat change each way, and then went on to do walk-canter-walk, within travers, on a circle, which got him really sitting and produced a much improved canter HP with better bend and jump, afterwards.

Oh CS you really are too beautiful :D Love the pink, what shade is it? Fuscia? He looks much more relaxed in himself :) You need matching over reach boots to your bads and bandages ;) ice browband too :)

browband is from otto schumacher, crystal mesh in gold.

thank you :)

ETA-nope, no shoes! hippy barefoot TB!!! hacks out fine without, has got feet like a native pony, like iron!!!!

pink set is anky in orchid, last years summer colours i think???

he is def starting to come out more relaxed, do think the coligone has helped too, he's been on that for nearly 3 months now, and just a 1/4 dose makes a big difference to him.

He looks lovely and loose and free. I was reading a very interesting article by Imke Schelkens Bartels in a dutch magazine about athletic development of the horse, he fits in with what she was saying about strengthening young horses. The pink isn't my thing on a bay, but never mind ;). It could be an optical illusion with the rug, but it looks like the back end of your saddle comes up off his back?

is the article online anywhere? would love to read :)

havent noticed the saddle bouncing, but will double check,ta. he does seem happy (and he's the sort that will pretty quickly let me know if he isnt happy!!!)

awww hes getting so grown up :)

really looks as though he is developing well, i havent heard of coligone before what does it do ** scuttles off to google it**. Also totally loving his gorgeous clip poor Rex has dreadful lines, keep telling him hair grows :D

ETA still jealous of the lack of snow, minus 14 tonight and the roads are horrendous!

coligone is for ulcers.
i just had a sneaky suspicion his tummy wasnt always 100% comfortable, so tried him on this, full dose for a month, then dropped it gradually and he's the same on the 1/4 does as the full dose-less grumpy about rug changes, grooming etc, and doesnt have a buck at my leg in the first canter transition any more, so he will be staying on it.

positively tropical here, -4 /-5 tonight, roads frosty but not death trap icy.be careful!!xx

FB-have just asked sis (she of technical knowledge!!), who says we will try and get vid at some point over weekend.

None of our horses have shoes at the yard either and we have a selection of breeds inc tb's :) , farrier says about 80% of horses don't need the shoes they wear!

RE the saddle thing I think it could be optical illusion from the sheepskin and light colour of exercise rug

thats cool, do you find the grazing gets waaaaay less churned up then when shod horses are/were on it? our ground is excellent anyway, but it never churns up now they dont have shoes on.

much easier in the ice and snow too!

Stunning! I am a bit of a lurker with your posts and don't usually comment, but I just love your matchy-matchy style! :D

This may or may not have been mentioned before, but IMO the only thing that would improve the photos would be you wearing a riding hat! No horse is bombproof, no matter how well behaved they usually are. I know I'll probably get told to keep my nose out and I respect that it is your choice as to whether you wear a hot or not, but please, please seriously consider it. You have too much talent to ruin it with a fall. x

massive lol @ lucemoose.....one of my friends calls it "the draught excluder"!!!!!!!!!!!!i love it, nice big fat german plaits!!!

JJBJ-it does get mentioned now and again, i do always wear one to jump and hack :)

Please do not start the hat debate again. PS is entitled to make her choice and given that one of her other posts this week has descended into a major hat debate I do not think it is fair for it to happen again. I for one love reading PS posts about Bruce & CS and love enviously looking at all the matchy matchiness and would hate for her to stop posting so can we leave it that as adults it is up to each individual to wear whatever they want on their head whether we all agree or not

definitely, we have very heavy soil with a lot of clay and those that had shoes couldnt be turned out if it was really wet as it messed it up too much.
and yes, no snowy stilettos anymore! always used to worry me about strained tendons etc and could never stop it however much grease you packed in their feet!

makes life sooooo much easier, no worrying about lost shoes before shows, or loose shoes on hacks etc, and play fighting in the field is less of a worry too.

livery pony has been shod up until this winter and really struggled with snow stilts, but has had her shoes off for a couple of months now and is finding it much easier, needs to build more concavity up to prevent it totally, but its a massive improvement on how she was shod.

amage-thank you. i dont think JJBJ has seen the other thread so will give benefit of doubt but as you say-id rather not have this thread go same way as t'other if we can all help it.

It wasn't intended to start a debate, as I said I respect that it is her decision. A friend of mine's daughter was left brain damaged after a fall without a hat from a "bombproof schoolmaster" and I would not wish the devastation it caused on my worst enemy, so whilst I respect the individual's decision I will always ask any rider I see without a hat on that they consider it in light of that experience.
I would also hate for her to stop posting, that was never my intention. Apologies if that's how it came across. x

ETA - just seen PS's reply, no I hadn't seen the other thread. I don't want it to seem like I was "starting" on you! I hope you will understand my reason for posting as I have explained above. No offence was meant. x

I really do need to get out i knew the browband and anky set before reading :o but he does look very pretty in it
would you mind sharing what you normally do in your normal (not sure if you have a different method for comps) warm up with CS please :)

Wow, hats off to you, you've transformed this horse. He looks much more active and athletic, and you can really see that his hind leg is very correct. I'm ever so impressed, and you should be extremely proud of the work you've done with this lovely horse! Lovely work, nice to see.

(and I LOVE the matchy matchy!)

ooooooh i might have to order that! thanks!

HS-thank you, you've made me come over all teary, he really is a little Star!he may not be bred for the job but he tries very hard, almost like he realises he's had a second chance.

langside-walk on a long rein, making sure he's stretching in to an even contact and moving actively off the leg, just bog circles and figures. i then move on to some easy lateral work in walk, either leg yields or alternating between shoulder in and travers on a big circle, not steep angles, just making sure he's equally supple both ways and stays connected to the outside rein.

up in to trot on a long rein, same as walk- making sure he's even-not hanging on one rein or pushing against either leg. usually go down each long side twice on each rein with inside flexion, making sure he bends easily and softly and keeps the bend off the inside leg to outside rein, not being held there by inside rein.

CS's *thing* has always been reaction to the leg, so just 2/3 times on a circle on each rein i collect the trot right up and then touch lightly with the leg and at the same time allow hands forward an inch or so, so that he springs forward off the hind leg and takes the neck out to the (still quite light and long rein) contact.

in canter i really need to make sure he stays on my outside rein, esp on left rein so i usually do some leg yields from centre line back to fence keeping him straight a couple of times, not letting him curl round my leg.then same exercise as in trot, bringing him right back then letting him really open up and power forward 2/3 times.
i do do some quite deep work in canter as iv found this really helps him let go over the back

back to trot and let him really stretch right to the ground for a circle, then walk on a long rein, and warm up is over.thats about 15 mins.

would do same at a show except would keep him on a smaller circle in walk until he has settled (he can be rather sharp initially at a show), and then would have to do a bit more trot work to completely settle him before cantering, so would need to do 20/25mins on a long/light contact before picking him up as if i do that too soon its counter productive.

so nothing massively complex, just concentrating on adjustability-forward and back, side to side and making sure he's supple in all directions.

Lovely pony - other than that I am certainly not qualified to comment ;)

I may well steal your warm up, as sometimes feel a little lost - but then again - 15 mins? Thats almost the whole length of my schooling sessions, really need to get ourselves fitter :o

thanks for that PS
I'll have something different to test the pone once the snow melts ;)
Having a quick thinking TB is rather unique to me compaired to my big brown tank who acted like she'd never done trot in her life sometimes so trying to force myself out of my 'traditional' ways as its getting close to the point where he could reproduce my warmup without me :O
