Feel like I might have my mojo back a bit, after feeling like I was drifting about a bit not really progressing! After horses having time off, me having time off and generally feeling confused at what BD wants me to aim at ;), it's been a quiet year for us!

However a new start can come at any point in the year right, so I donned my man-up pants and booked into a clinic organised by my lovely saddle fitter extraordinaire! The first one blew my socks off with positivity, and yes actually I am doing it right and lets crack on :).

Therefore I booked both carriage horses onto the Novemeber one :eek3:, with my lovely friend agreeing to come and babysit us :biggrin3:.

First up Skylla, I mistakenly thought I'd do her first as I wouldn't need to work as hard, I was wrong :o . I have been a bit precious with her and instructors, as she has been a little strong willed about life and I really wanted to keep her trainable attitude and not pressure her too much. However she is now strong enough and mature enough to start doing more and having more asked of her. Worked on getting her to accept the contact more and not letting her whizz about, Skylla actually really tried her socks off (she may also have sullied the brand spanking new area surface by weeing on it, the shame :o).

Lots of shoulder-fore to straighten her up especially on the left rein, leg yield to get the leg on and wide low hands to keep encouraging the neck out and down. We are not concerned with where her head is, but her breeding makes her automatically bring her neck up out of the whithers, which means she is not round over her back, so neck down, back up and then the hind legs can swing through.

Into canter, and really the main points are quicker, direct upwards transition and down into a slow trot to stop the whizzing :o, Skylla is still a bit mystified as to why canter has to be this calm, smooth affair and not just all out CANTER :o ;). Really interesting to use the sitting trot out of canter to help control the downwards transition and help pull her up quicker, and she suggested a stick might help the direct transition :eek3:, who'd a thunk it with that whizzy beast, but actually the whizzing is masking her not being super fit and listening!

We got tired at this point and had the vague whiff of a strop, so was pleased when Dianne said to stop here as she's worked hard. Getting someone who can recognize when to say yes that's enough is so important for young horses I think. Left warts and all in the video's and you can see Skylla show off the beginnings of her posh, elevated trot :). Again super lovely to hear, yes lets develop that when it's offered and not quash it down as we actually wanted something else :).

Topaz in the next installment...

Onto Topaz who refused to walk around the corner past the drain of doom, then refused to enter the indoor and then entered like she was breathing fire :o, yep she really is nearly ten years older than Skylla :o.

Started with calming her down and getting her listening. So Si to Travers to change of rein, renvers, SI, ect, basically mixing it up, short steep changes of rein, lots of changes of bend, flexion and lateral work and the relaxation and calmness started to seep in. Asked if we could look at the half-passes as we seem a bit stuck of how to improve at the moment (never awful scores but lack of bend and suppleness are our frequent comments). In trot left seemed good, but we got a bit sticky right (we may have been spooking at the people sat in the corner :o), which was great as then we could work through it.

So using the travers to get the bend, half-pass for a couple of steps and back into leg-yield and into travers, really loosened her up, got the bend and got her attention make, so definitely something for the toolbox!

Canter she felt really good (we've done a lot of strength and collection work at home to keep developing this as it's her weakest pace).

Half-pass right to thinking large pirouette:

Changes:

Really need to get a much more collected and sitting canter to get a reliably clean change, but excellent homework I can do on my own!

Then pirouette work, only the start of it and obviously lots to work on but I am so chuffed to be at this stage!

Really came home thinking we have a clear plan, and actually I can do this on my own, as I often really like I can only do it when being told what to do :o, so feeling super positive for the next season :). A winter of training and then bring on 2018!!!

Fantastic write up, haven't watched the videos as am at work but will do later as love your pair. Instructor sounds like she got them both just right, it's so lovely when that happens, particularly with one that, knowing the full warts and all picture as an owner, you're a bit protective of

That's looking really good with both; isn't it great to have a positive, and pushing forwards, instructor?

It's made such a difference to me, when I'd probably not realised how much I'd been wombling about :o. Glad you think they're looking good, it felt super at points!

Exactly what she ^ said, well done :)

Thank you :), amazing feeling having a good lesson!

My saddle fitter kept suggesting I come to these clinics (they are at my saddle fitters yard), and I'm so glad I gavr it a go, she seemed to just 'get' both of them despite being funny breeding .

So excited now, just as it should be :).

Sounds like a couple of good hard working sessions. Thanks for sharing the vids, no warts there, but always useful to see work in progress and lovely to watch your progression.

Thank you :), lots of bobbling about on my part :o:lol: but so inspired coming away from it!

Hah, I am busy bobbling and wobbling about trying to work on transitions. I generally collapse in a heap ! You are far more graceful !

Give over I have never been called graceful !

Di Breeze? Lovely lady.

Thanks for posting the videos, it's very interesting watching others progress, well done.

Yes that's the one she is fab :).

That looks and sounds great. Topaz doesn't look easy to sit to (in trot or canter!) and you look great!!

I'm hoping for a little motivation next month as I'm off to AM dressage for two days (and hopefully won't have to cancel this time!), likely with both my horses. I need to work out what to aim for next year as well, with Indio it all depends on his straightness and soundness, and with Pocholo it's whether I can get him sharp enough for Medium level work. I'm considering switching to side saddle so I can always carry a stick :D

Trot is tricky, canter is actually easier .

You'll have a blast and I'm sure be super motivated afterwards, good luck!!

That's her! She's a well known equestrian artist, amongst other things. She's also got a PhD in something. She's been abroad for a bit, it's nice to know that she's back.

About a million years ago, she and I were on RC dressage teams together. I was riding this guy, who she did this portrait of. She was riding a chesnut called Khardinal.

Great videos! Won't say too much as I've already commented on FB but what a lovely sounding instructor. She seemed to 'get' them both and have a chuckle when they had a bit of a mare moment and just go along with it, not try to get you to quell them or argue like some people do. It never works!! Lovely horses and Topaz's changes make me chuckle every time :)

Ive seen her work on her website but that's a lovely story :). Hope she doesn't go abroad again, feel likes she's done wonders with us already!!

She is fantastic for that, really got both of them and played to their strengths. Brilliant brilliant lady!

You'd chuckle less if you had to sit to those changes ;).

Great videos, thanks for sharing them :)

You're welcome glad people have enjoyed them :).

Massive well done, both looking really super :) totally agree that having someone who pushes you (& who has a bit of a vision) is so helpful - and enjoyable! :D

Thanks, really enjoying the clinics as I can take things home to work on and not feel like I can't do it on my own, she also didn't laugh when I mentioned advanced in the next 12 months :o:eek3:.

Well done, this all sounds very thorough! I missed an episode - why did they become The Carriage Horses?

Lovely to see you haunting the forum again, how’s Japan?

Just their breeding makes them carriage horses, both bred for that job rather than a ridden one and lets face it you’d have to be mental to ride a bonkers hot Hackney cross Friesian right?

Crikey HotToTrot....we are honoured by your presence!!

Quite! :)
