Any recommendations for alternatives for using carrots in carrot stretches? Mare loves carrots but she is fat after some time off and naturally quite a hivey horse, carrots seem to bring her out in little bumps.

I’ve got some treats but she isn’t that fussed on them so won’t properly stretch to reach them, whereas she will with carrots but I’m reluctant to keep giving them to her if I can avoid it

Yes worth a try actually, I don’t know if I’ve ever given her a lick so will see how she gets on with that

It's worth trying a few different treats because some seem more tempting than others. My mare loves Equibites above all other treats, so they might be worth a go. As Mule said, licks might work, a Mini Horslyx is good.

I use a lick because you can generally get the horse to hold the stretch for longer than the moment it takes to eat a treat. Alternatively, some of the horses normal feed ration in a shallow cup can work the same way, as they sort of mouth at it rather than getting a whole mouthful.

I use the naf hedgy treats, horse really likes them. If he gets a sniff he starts offering stretches all over the place for them
