Why do dogs get fatty lumps?
My springer bitch has over the week developed a chipolata shaped and sized lump on her shoulder ( it was definately not there sunday)
Vet stuck a needle in it, and after examining under a microscope, declared it to be a fatty lump probably caused by a knock.
Will it go away?
Will it get bigger?
Will it turn into something more sinister? ( The vet told me a load of stuff but I was so worried it went "WHOOSH" over the head)
I have been told to measure it every week and to squeeze it to see it if gets squishy.....

Matty dog had loads of them everywhere. Some of them were really quite big. I had every single new one checked and they were all fatty lumps. She got them from the age of around 9 onwards.
Vet told me not to bother doing anything about them unless they were restricting her movements.
Then Dex got one on his side which disappeared after a month.

My old bitch had one her whole life, on her back, totally benign, never caused her a day of bother. Never experienced it before or since but know a few other people who's dogs have had them, with no ill-effect.

What do you feed?
(this is not medical advice just something i have noticed)

I have noticed dogs that are fed a lower quality food get fatty lumps and hard lumps on their elbows.

Saying that i had a JRT who got them when he got really old and he was never fed kibble.

Don't know why but St Sweep has loads - some bigger then others. The biggest was the one on his chest - just under his collar. It slowly grew over two or three years - I montiored it as did the vets and finally it was big enough and getting in his way to make it worth removing. The reason for not doing it early was his age - but when the finally operated they removed two - the biggest one on his chest weighed nearly a pound!!

Anyway it is now a year on and the two that were removed haven't grown back although he still has lots of little ones.:o

Why ask me.....cos Im fat:p:D

Im no expert but, basically they are more common in the older dog, esp those packing a little to many pounds;):D
They are effectivly fatty deposits.
They need to be checked to make sure they are not cancerous and then kept an eye for for growth and how rapid the growth maybe, they can be removed if deemed they are causing problems are growing somewhere inconvenient or causing issues or grow rather large, but generally they are left alone.

They can turn cancerous but more commonly remain as fatty non sinister lumps, you vet will ask you to check the size, shape and familiarise yourself with how it feels, like squishy, hard, and if you re concerned then another check up with the vet.

Don't stress missus:p

So even though the bl**dy thing popped up in less than 4 days to that size its nothing to stress about.....
She isnt old either, and certainly not overweight, as I am paranoid about having a fat springer (if you had seen my old neighbours springer you would understand that fear!).
I feel like my poor dog is being picked on. She eats the correct amount of food, runs about all day, and is certainly not old and has the doggy version of what seems to be celulite!!!

All ours have had hard patches on their elbows from lying on hard surfaces :o
Our female who had the lump was a bit of a hefter, though.

Yeah, those elbow calluses (sp) are pretty common in the harder breeds that don't use super padded beds and lie in a harder surface.

Fatty lumps are also more common in podgy female dogs:p

But i don't mean like callouses like that i mean like hard pea like things on the elbows.
I have seen it in a bunch of older labs and pits but that the only breeds i have seen it in regularly.
I'm not sure what they are and don't even know if it has anything to do with food but its just something i have noticed.

Did the vet confrm it was a fatty lump?

I said it's more common in older dogs but not unheard of for younger dogs to get them either, the weimeraner OH walks has one on her chest, she is 2 years old and not over weight.

Who is picking on her?

Oi you does she LOOK fat? Noooooooooo:p
crazy hound maybe, sock nicker and scoffer absolutely, but fat, no!

*slinks off to take picture of said hound dog*
It will take some time as I have to get her to stay still long enough to have a picture taken!:D

When SU and Cayla have finished with the bitch fight I'll continue with the thread in question shall I?
Matt was a slightly podgy lady but we turned her into a sylph. The lumps remained although didn't increase in size.
Dex, however, is a toned hunk of a dog and only 3. His did disappear though and, to date, has not come back.

My old terrier has 2.... because he is a porker.

Kizzy had several, they started popping up when she was about 8 or 9 and has never been overweight. They were all innocent and caused her no problems, bless her.

Lol at you lot fighting. Made me giggle

My oldest dog got one, we had it checked and it was a fatty lump. She was about 8/9.
Now at about 14, she has several, all over her body. But they dont cause any issues
