Jumped him for the first time since the PC champs today :) Hes STILL got his long coat because my clippers wont be ready till the 22nd Nov as motor blew, so waiting for them to be fixed! And he also has a massive tummy.. It has reduced in size since hes come back into work but we still have a long way to go before he will look like a nice event horse again! :p

Anyway, just hired the school down the road today. Mum had a sit on him whilst i got the jumps out (first time shes ridden in a few years!) and Rocky was good and behaved for her :) Then i hopped back on and mum became camera woman again. He was a very good boy, just found him a little bit flat but i think thats due to him not being very fit and getting so sweaty so quickly due to his coat. Whilst hes been off, me and my instructor (whos broken her leg coming off her 4yo who took a distinct dislike to the bin men! :( ) have been looking through my jumping videos and she said i need to 'give' alot more with my hands because i dont give him enough rein for him to make a nice shape over the fence. So i concentrated on that today. Very rusty with my jumping though (especially seeing a stride) even after only 2 months off.

Anyway, here are some pictures - CC away, the more the better :)
p.s i know my elbows need glueing to my body! :p

sorry for the pic overload!

very smart pics, you look so *togther* in them all, like you both know exactly what the other was thinking :)

in some pics the contact does look a little tight, but i have the opposite problem of chucking hands away so maybe not best person to comment! looks softer towards the end of the pics so maybe as you got your stride seeing eye back *in*, you got less tense and thus relaxed your arms a bit more?

rocky looks very powerful in his canter work.

Ah, pictures can be deceiving RE: powerful canter ;) mum took over 100 pics (yes some of the floor, fence, school, and sky ) but i wouldnt say its particulalry powerful, however i do like his canter and find it very easy to adjust when were jumping :)

Def agree that in some of the pics the contact is tight, i need to learn to extend my arms.. instead my elbows come out and i look like a chicken trying to take off!

Thanks about looking 'together', i have to say i was very impressed with some of his walk-canter trans and flying changes! They may not have looked perfect, but he was so quick to my aids which i love :D hate horses that arent sensitive :)

wow, he looks quite different in his winter woolies! :)

He looks happy to be back jumping :D
Going to do some jumping this winter? :)

If we can afford it then yes will do some jumping, but atm just need to concentrate on getting him fit, because he finds it much, much easier when hes fitter. when hes not so fit like at the moment, he tends to go flat and not really make a proper shape over the fence so the fitter the better! :) And yes he does enjoy his jumping :D Not going to jump him very often, so hopefully he'll be rearing to go XC next year ;)

Yes, we now refer to him as the fat, fluffy, pony :p im hoping that hes got so much fluff, that when i clip him the tummy will come off to ;)

i have similar problems with my hands, i either dont give enough or throw it away!
years of riding dirty stoppers or being tanked off with after fences

so no CC from me just compliments that you look a solid partnership and he clearly loves it!

ahh, i dont have that excuse of dirty stoppers, just a really bad habbit! I just seem to feel really unbalanced if i give much more with my hands :/ My winter homework!

ditto- i don't give with my hands enough either- again its down to dirty stoppers... i do the 'chicken' thing BBR- esp at big spreads which scare me (think i am trying to flap my way over :D)
i think you look brill together- he looks lovely and soft in the flatwork piccies.

Looking good :)

I think the prob with your arms is that on take off you are folding over your hands - if you look at the first jump pic you can see what I mean :) It is all about habit, and you just need to get into the habit of pushing your elbows forward as you bend, making sure that you can see your hands at all times :D

I do the funky chicken over a fence and was given a good exercise to do by a really top trainer (this was going back a few years when I was having lots of lessons).

I had to keep popping over lots of little fences from trot, and then canter, not allowed to fold forward at all, instead had to keep sitting up but allowing the hands to go forward, so it was a real give and take from the arm, not the shoulder/elbow flap.

Boring but it did help and coming in from trot gives you a chance to think about what you are doing with your hands. Try it!

I was going to ask if you've ever ridden anything that tanks off after a fence? I have the exact same problem and this is why. All my horses have been the same, real whizzy after the jump so the habit has stuck  However new boy is not a tanker so will need to correct this ASAP.

nope not had anything thats tanked off afterwards that i can remember - i have no excuse! next time i jump i will have a lesson i think. thanks for that llewelyn, will try that :) yep your right weezy, bad habbit that i need to crack over the winter!

My bad habit was bending my elbows, not releasing and standing in my stirrups.
A clinic with Pat Burgess helped a lot. She said to imagine you were in a room sitting on the only chair in the room with a bottle of your favourite tipple on a table in front of you. 2 people walk in the room, one wanting the chair & the other the drink. You have to keep your bum on the chair & reach forward to get the bottle.
It's helping me. I told it to my usual instructor & she said a week later that she had used it for other pupils & it was interesting to see who were the drinkers!
