I've never done it but my friend did and the horse was kicked in the field 3 weeks later and PTS. I'm not usually superstitous but I am about changing names! I had to put up with the name Dylano for 7 years, such a silly long name!
I never usually am, but a friend changed her horses and he ended up with kissing spines 8 months later, but i'm not usually superstitious at all.... if it was something REALLY ridiculous I might consider it. B's previous owner changed her name from Ali and Bean and never had any probs
my best ever horse (grey in my siggy) had 2 names i couldn't stand when i got her. she didn't know her stable name at all so i changed both names. she went on to big things, although she had her share of bad luck. tbh i think that's just horses, nothing to do with name change!
My horse's posh name is Amaretto, and was gonna change it to Matty, Biscuit, Marty etc etc. He was 3 and a half at the time, just backed and was called Uno. Hated it, but when he came to me, he responded to it and I coudn't make my mind up with a new name, so Uno stuck! Quite like it now though - when he's a sh!t he's Fiat Uno and when he's good he is the Numero Uno!!!
) then turned to Robbie, then Bob! He was fab, never had a problem with him and I beleve is being just as good with his owners now. Goddy's "show" name was changed, but not his stable name... saying that I HATED Godfrey when I first heard it, but love it now
No offence to anyone but changing a horses name does not cause kick injuries, kissing spines or any other veterinary problem! It may make the owner feel better that they can blame changing the name but it is not something taught at vet school as something that predisposes to life threatening injuries
In general i dont think id do it...es no point confusing the poor bugger especially if its an older horse that will respond to its name....you wouldnt do it to a dog...
but if it was a young horse that haddent learned to associate the name id consider it if the name was relly bad or embarrassing....as it happens iv only met one older pony who got a new name he was a 13h pony that my friends got to teach kids to ride on...they really had to change the name ..he was called Dick!!

can just see the vet trying to make diagnosis, "well i dont know what the problem could be...have you perhaps changed this horses name recently...?*
I don't think it matters... our pony has a 'posh'name...but over the years we have had him...his pet name has changed so many times...currently he's called pickle pants. And yes...he's a bit of a character!!

Actually, I cant help but salute a magpie but i wouldnt blame it for my horse losing a shoe. I wont walk over 3 drains or under a ladder either
But changing a horses name doesnt worry me, just as long as the horse doesnt know its name, otherwise i think its unfair. Fickle, moi?
QR- Our horses all have their names changed and... well most have gone wrong! lmao We have to have dickensian names unfortunatly so over the years:
Prince= Barnaby, fantastic horse, legendary even, eventually surcummed to twisted hindleg confo= arthritus at 16
Jed= Copperfield, sweetest horse that ever existed but hideous confo and misstreated, buggered shoulder, retired 15ish (although i hear he is now sound and is the rescue's new mascot because he's so fab!)
Guiness= Magnus, ace, still going strong at 20 in hard work
Hermes van't Kaliahof= Mr Scrooge, bred for meat in belgium (idiot rescue job) DJD age 6. gone home with groom to see if treatment we can't afford with put him right.
something I can't remember= Murphey, did a tendon age 4, sold to happy hacker
Hasholme Q'Appelle= Jacob Marley, weird hind legs, now locking occasionally, under investigation
Hasholme Rhone= Tiny Tim, sweetie, not really done enough to go wrong yet! Sure it'll change when we take him to arlington show in a few weeks
Willingham Fritz= Mr Fips, few weeks after got him found sarcoids, now has tumor on willy age 4
I think that'll do.... probs averages as now a good idea!
Oh and a horse on our yard was originally called Nobbie, but new owner changed it to Robbie - she didn't want to have to shout out the old name when going to catch him from the field and who can blame her?!
Paddy's posh name is Caperann Carl - his previous owners apparently called him Carl - eurgh. Pad's current owners OH kept calling him Paddy in his first few days at the yard and it stuck so now he's Paddy, the soundest lovesliest horse I've ridden. So no I think its all a lot of b****!
Yes I changed my mare's name. Her passport name is Toorafin Lady so naturally the dealers who brought her over from Ireland called her Lady, her previous owners kept that name but when I bought her from them I couldnt keep that name! With the help of you lovely HHOers I changed her stable name to Tia (Maria).
And I wouldnt say we've had any particular bad luck at all.
I don't have any qualms about changing names, I frequently do it if I don't like the old one. Newest horse is still nameless (Thankyou all for your suggestions, Madam still hasn't decided on one yet, he is still just spotty horse) He came from the stockyards with no name or history attached, poor man.
Apart from 2 of my current 8 horses, I have renamed them all.
My first pony was called Bunty and i didn't like the name at all. So i changed it to Heidi. It was killed by a car 10 weeks later whist I was riding it. My second pony I didn't like her name - Margo. But after what had happened to my first I put up with it and kind of grew to like it. Never changed a horses name since then. But that's just me.
got a horse from the sales who was called 118 118 cos the grooms could never get hold of the owner needless to say we called him ziggy........................
