Yep, I've done it loads of times. None of them has ever been confused; I could've shouted "Come here you evil toads" and they all would've galloped in for tea anyway. PF doesn't answer to anything in particular, she just recognises my voice.
My cob was called Trojan when I got him and I hated it so changed it to Merlin even though he was 10. Although I'm not convinced that Trojan was his actual name or just one the dealer had made up!!
My yearling was called Snip - which reminds me of a vasectomy so she is now called Callie. Its often said its bad luck to change their name but I get nowt but bad luck in my life anyway so took the chance!! - cue the violins

I bought Saffron from a gypsy family after she turned up in the field next door to ours. She used to be called Ginger (reminded me of the character from Black Beauty and she's nothing like that).
That was 8 years ago and apart from a strained tendon we haven't had any problems
fellow livery bought a jumper from abroad, name was Jesus (pronounced heresoos) every time he entered the ring and commentator said ' riding jesus' you could always see livery cringe and mutter *it's HERESOOS*...
She was called Chicka on her papers, but didnt answer to it at all, and I just thought it was a bit ugly
Instructor also called her Chicka Tikka Masala a few too many times for my liking, so I decided to come up with something prettier! I had lots of fancy ideas - Dante being one of them - but in the end Ellie just seemed to suit her. No ill effects to report yet, nine years on....
