I would definately change a hideous or unbearably common name, but on the whole would probably leave be most of the time. We have a new tradition at work or renaming Tysons, they are practically unrehomable!
Baxter has always been Bax, he was only 5 months when I bought him but I never considered changing it, I like Baxter
I reckon about 50% of our rehomes get a new name, typically people go super cutesy (bleurgh!) or very butch. A woman wants to rename one of my dogs Dyson, he is currently Logan and has been for his 4 years on earth. I am FURIOUS about it and I cant really explain why!
