Chapped Winter Hands

i'm on the constant lookout for decent handcream and have tried millions...

personally, i find the cheap and cheerful Johnson & Johnson one the best. i think it's called 24hr something.

lots of people on here recommend the soap and glory one too, but i didn't rate that. too greasy.

i also slather elizabeth arden 8 hr cream on them sometimes too, and find that helps.

oh, and wear gloves outside as much as poss. i've just invested in a hardcore pair of super warm gloves and they are helping a bit. x

I use L'Occitane Shea butter hand cream , its great .

ive also come across a very old fashioned cream called " Snowfire " its in a push up tube , it Stinks like hell but its very good .

I have tried johnsons baby lotion, st ives 24h intensive, and loads of other cheap and cheerful makes and had no luck.

Will have to try the Soap and Glory, is it hideously expensive?

my hands get really bad and I've tried all sorts, the only think that made them any better is wearing a good pair of gloves!

I have this problem most of the year!! I have tried lots including steriod cream from the doctors!

I have just started using Cien (they sell it in Lidl), its got glycerin and beeswax in it and its got to be the best one I have used, and it costs less than £1 for a big tube!!

I used Johnson's Hand Cream and find it works really well. I put it on once a day at night before I go to bed and it stops my hands from getting too dry. I also wear gloves as often as possible in the winter when working on the yard.

Wear gloves :) I always have to anyway whether it's riding or yard jobs as I get blisters from overuse of pitchforks etc!

I normally use Vaseline hand and nail cream. Works wonders for me!

I used to really bad chapped hands in winter but have had lovely hands for the last couple of years. I swear by Boots Aqueous Cream - a huge tub about £5 lasts well over months. I keep it by the kitchen sink and always after washing my hands I put some on, it's not greasy just sinks right into your skin. It's brilliant stuff :)

Another one for Elizabeth Arden 8 hour cream - a big dollop when going to bed and another go at some point during the day works wonders. It was actually invented for racehorses and I've often thought about trying it on my horses mudfever :)

I really like clarins hand and nail treatment cream. Haven't found one that works as well as this. It is a bit pricey but you only need a little bit.

Try to wear gloves when doing the 'muddy jobs' the mud dries your skin out!

Aloe Vera for your hands!

You can also get 'moisturising gloves' from tescos so you can put lots of aloe vera on or any other type of hand cream at night and let your hands absorb it when you sleep!

I've given up with handcreme, it helps, but it doesn't stop it.

Instead, go to your vets and ask for some thin disposable gloves (or buy on line). They are REALLY cheap, just a couple of pounds for a hundred. Put them on either alone or under your normal gloves. You don't have to thow them away each day - each pair of mine last about 3 weeks!

They work a treat as your hands will never get wet.

I slather my hands in intensive moisturiser (can't remember which I'm using at the mo) then put thin nitrile gloves on over the top just before I go to bed. It then has all night to soak in and I wake up with lovely hands. I also wear nitrile disposble gloves all the time at the yard.

equimins do a horsey hand cream and it is fab, you can get it in a big dispenser thing that fits perfectly in the cup holder in my car, i put some on each time i leave the car so my hands are covered in it before heading out in the cold, works a treat
nutragena is good too but i find it greasy

Gloves, and Neutrogena Norwegian Formula (my hands are fine when I remember to use it lol)

Definitely second this - Neutrogena Norwegian Formula is the ONLY thing that stops my hands from getting chapped or can de-chap them (is that even a word, lol!?) when I forget to apply it!

Naf Stablehands just before you go to sleep - it's a bit greasy, but it smells lush and your hands feel great in the morning. Also, Boots Essential Intensive hand cream for dry skin is cheap and cheerful but great and sinks in pretty fast, for during the day. Just keep slapping it on!

Gloves, and Neutrogena Norwegian Formula (my hands are fine when I remember to use it lol)

and another vote for this! You need the smallest amount and is ever so effective! Is better if you wear gloves over it as otherwise you rub or wash it off so fast, but is fab either way!

I totally sympathise with you - my skin cracks, bleeds and is generally very painful over winter. I have tried loads of lotions and potions - off the shelf and prescibed. Neutrogena didn't help me at all unfortunately, just very greasy.

Currently using Eucerin cream - off the shelf from Boots. So far so good.

Also making sure I am wearing gloves & if wet I put a pair of single use vinyl gloves on first. The latex ones make it worse because they have a powdering subsence in.

Good Luck & if you find a miracle cure please share :)

I use bodyshop hemp
It has Ingredants from cannabis plant but it is brilliant
It's 10.00 a tube but defently worth the money
Even my oh uses it as he works in reserfcing roads etc

To help heal the chaps (e.g. forgot to put enough cream on....) have found this very cheap cream called Skintex, got it from a local chemist, about £2.50 a pot and lasts for ages. Put it on my feet as well as heels get chapped in the winter. What a mess we are!!

Echo using gloves as much as possible while on the yard. I use Bodyshop Intensive Repair - not the hemp one (can't stand the smell) but the one with almond oil. You rub a little bit in last thing at night and it soaks in and leaves your hands really soft by the next morning. You can put gloves on top if you want, but I find it works just as well without.
