My girls were really struggling today with midges?! They didn't have flyspray on at all last year as there was no need so it was a bit of a shock to see them being bothered by them in march!
Any cheap sprays that work or alternatives please :)

I have been told that Avon Skin So Soft is really good for keeping the midgies away. I haven't used it myself but that's what they use up in Scotland apparently!

Yup.I'm using avon sss this week,so far so good.its the green one (fresh) gonna buy in bulk nxt time on offer :)

Marmite let her lick the spoon lol. It gets in the blood stream and flys hate it. as said b4 avon so soft. lavender, Tee tree oil, citronela, cider vinegar. Put all or some of the above with stew'd tea.

Have a look on eBay under the equestrian section for "Shoo fly". It's a concentrate in a tin that you dilute to make 2 litres of spray. (£9.75 & £2.40 p&p) I've used it in the past and it works.

Does anyone find that their SSS goes hard so won't spray? I received some last week and it was rock hard so wouldn't spray, few days later I went to fetch it from the tack room to send it back and it was back to being liquid......and yes you guessed it, the following day I went to use it and it was rock hard again!!

I got some of the Robinsons own brand cheap stuff (think about £4 last year) thinking it wouldn't be long lasting but would do for short periods. Was actually quite impressed, works as well as the likes of naf etc

I find this very effective.

Someone lease post a link. I got the Avon SSS bath oil, thinking that was the right one. Don't think it is. :(

I use Avon skin so soft on my boy and so far it's been great. He still gets a few bites, but not nearly as many as he would without it.

It goes solid when it gets cold so you have to keep it warm! I take mine home every night as if I leave it in the tack room it gets too cold and solidifies!

Does anyone know if any of the Avon body washes have the same insect repellent effect? Thought I might start washing his legs with it if it works in the same way.

Cold tea, Citronella Oil ( a few drops), Washing up liquid to make it mix (again a few drops) and garlic granules. In a garden spray bottle, works a treat for me.

Absolutely make your own, I have done for the past two years and this recipe works wonders. (I add a touch of white wine vinegar to mine) I have also used Skin So Soft which is very good too. Honestly don't waste your money on the expensive shop bought ones like I have over the years.

another vote for skin so soft - yes we do use it in scotland - they now sell it in mountaineering shops. also used naf last year which worked ok bit pricey tho.

Make your own. I use Avin Skin So Soft, citronella oil, lavender oil and vinegar. Put in a spray bottle (£1 for 2 in poundland) and top with water. Give a goood shake. The ingredients were under a tenner and I have made 4 bottles from them! Still got loads left and its very effective
