Cheeky/ridiculous posts you see on Facebook.

She could have avoided this situation entirely if she got off her bum and went to view the horse before buying. I honestly don't know why novices are buying their first horse and can't even be bothered to go and see them to make sure they can handle and ride the horse at the current home, let alone when it's been relocated to a strange environment.

Yes she was obviously missold and yes she's a novice, but:

a) Novices should know they are novice and take advice before buying any animal, let alone one as complex as a horse who needs daily handling and who you plan to ride.
b) No-one should buy a horse without saving up some funds to manage their care and a vet fund for excesses and exclusions.
c) She now wants money back for him.

This is a living, breathing animal, now entirely dependent on a person with no money or experience. I mean WHO just buys a horse without any thought, care, support or financial means. A horse is not an entitlement and if you can't afford one, don't buy one.
Totally agree - unfortunately there is nothing to stop novices being impulsive/stupid, and nothing to stop the unscrupulous taking advantage. And the horse suffers :( There is a lot to be said for some sort of licence to own ( apart from I'm not sure who I'd trust to administer it sensibly and fairly)

I can't conclude if this advert is looking for a broodmare to buy, or if it's an advert for stud. Either way it made me puke up in my mouth.

Pardon me whilst I throw up!!!!! I suppose we should be grateful there is no mention of "fur babies"

A post last night on one of these dodgy dealer sites that an apparent dealer is refusing to take a horse back.
Said dealer comes on denying being a dealer and posts a video to show that there was no issues with the horse when they had it. Cue a horrendous video of an overweight rider on a clearly very lame behind horse. A few people have commented it’s lame but the dealer has argued that it’s not lame, it just needs to go forwards. One person has commented that “it’s not lame coz there’s no head nod”

They then post a video that new owner sent of horse. Horse is now doing the classic slamming on/napping/rearing that’s classic with hind end lameness. When it does trot away you can see it’s very lame. Rider just pushes it forward and holds it in a ‘shape’.

I am done with horse people. The lack of even basic knowledge out there is startling. These people are absolutely clueless. The fact they can post those videos and think they show a sound horse astounds me. Surely nobody can be that dense??

The dealer will be very well aware that the horse is lame. They probably bought it cheap from someone who instead of pts their unrideable, unwanted, lame, elderly horse sold it for a low price and appeased their own conscience by saying that it was sold with full disclosure. There are so many novice / first time horse owners who buy unseen and unvetted these days that the dealers don't even have to resort to any kind of strategy to get the horse to behave at viewings or to pass a vet when it clearly shouldn't. There will also be dealers mates, staff and family members who will post to support the dealer - not so much dense as immoral.

A lot of people who are buying horses now don't have the slightest idea of what they are getting themselves into. They look at vettings as being unnecessary for low priced horses as the cost of the vetting is a high percentage of the value. Then they claim they've got no money for vet bills, and they are not covered by insurance as they are pre-existing.

Of course the distance selling laws allow you to return a horse to the dealer if not suitable for any reason, but any self respecting dodgy knows that even a ccj doesn't mean they have to return the money if they are self employed and register vehicles and other possessions which can be seized, in a family members name.

The whole business is very demoralising atm, lots of horses ending up in bad situations.

This is the issue, an experienced friend of mine was helping a friend who'd had a hard time with a lame horse previously look and was utterly convinced they had found a bargain from a dealer they knew was dodgy as heck (and I think based in Ireland to add to the issue). When I said I wouldn't buy from them... My friend confidently asserted that it's fine as you can just return if not suitable and they have to give you a full refund 🤦‍♀️

I saw this post last night but can't find it now. Has it been deleted?

I think it’s been deleted. The seller replied to my comment that it was lame with “I think it just doesn’t like being ridden in a tight contact” and then when I went back to look 5 minutes later, the whole thing had disappeared.

Apparently the person who bought it was a dealer aswell.

😢 It's soul destroying, yet another one on a downward spiral on the dodgy dealer merry-go-round. If the buyer is a dealer they won't be able to return the horse as it's a trade sale and posting videos of the lame horse isn't going to help them pass it on to someone else once a lot of other folks call it out as lame. Maybe that's why they've removed the post.

There's a dealer with the initials JS who claims not to be a dealer when both buying and selling. Buys horses then threatens the sellers with court action if they don't let her keep the horse and also get part of the money back. I don't know if they all have issues but it's a tactic she's used more than once.

If it's the same one she also takes 'free to good home' companions and sells them on as ridden horses. Someone I know (luckily knowledgeable enough to know what she's looking at) ended up with a horse from JS that had an issue with it's pastern so bad that it's fetlock touched the floor as it walked. She took it for £500 from JS and loaned out as a companion to a friend locally. It now has a secure future but it's apparently not the first time she's tried this with 'free' or loaned horses.

Sounds like the same one :( , at least one horse is in a safe place now.

I generally try to avoid getting involved in these things on Fb, but I’d been up since 5.30am with the dogs and I just looked at these videos of a poor lame horse and felt my blood boiling.

The original seller/dealer was clueless and couldn’t see the horse was practically hobbling behind in trot, its head flinging up every stride it took. She claimed it was bridle lame because the rider wasn’t pushing it forward. She even more hilariously claimed that a dealer wouldn’t have bought a lame horse and they’d showed him that video and he thought it was fine.

The video of the new owner/dealer on it showed a much stronger rider, so typically the horse had reverted to shouting louder and was reversing/rearing. When he did get it forwards, it took the most dodgy trot strides behind.
Idiots, the lot of them. It makes me embarrassed to be an equestrian, quite frankly.

I saw an advert for a draught mare for sale this morning. I suspect dodgy as heck tbh, owned 4 months, only for sale due to new baby which immediately sounds suspicious. She then goes on to describe how steady and safe this mare is, in essence saying you can just about beat her in to a canter 😢 which is sad enough on its own, but the poor mare is so thin it's no wonder she's quiet. I wish I had facilities and means to take these sort of horses out of these situations 😢

At first I thought you might be talking about a horse currently on my yard. Also for sale 'due to new baby' which is tosh, as girl never did anything with her horses long before baby - always had multiple sharers for another horse who do all the chores. Stupid girl has done nothing with said horse except turn up once in a blue moon to frag him around the hills and wonders why he's unpredictable. Also has issues, but miraculously he doesn't have these anymore now he's for sale...a few people have pulled her up on it already, but I fear this horse will end up somewhere dodgy (he's 21), and girl will just buy another cheapie. I think local buyers are picking up on it, as she's had no interest despite advertising for a couple of months, now.

Person who very frequently advertises full livery spaces at their yard, asking for volunteers to work there. "Under 14s must be accompanied by an adult"

If I were paying full livery, I would expect the people looking after my horse to be paid for their work and I definitely would not expect the work to be done using free child labour!

Imagine the insurance implications!
Loads of people defending it though. 'Health and safety gone mad/world's gone soft' type stuff.

Also, I will add to list of 'yards not to approach' when time finally comes from me. Coming across super unprofessional and rude to anyone who has queried it. Maybe explains why they're so often advertising vacancies.
