I watched the racing today with my aunt and uncle. He always loved the racing but he’s very frail now and has Alzheimer’s. We’ve had a great afternoon, he picked a horse in every race and I put a little bet on for him (like 50p). He loved it, sadly he’s a £1 down at the end of the day.
I had put more than that on SS I have to admit. £20! A huge bet for me.

edited as it was meant to sound joking that he was a £1 down. 😄. I didn’t make him settle his debts!

Do you get any prize money?
He won about £98000 so divide that by 3000 ( I think that’s how many shares he has). About £30. It will pay for his renewal, once you buy into a horse you only pay keep and management year on year.

I lied, he’s got 4000 shares. £24.50!

What do you reckon on bond broker? My only fear is getting involved and then something happens to them and feeling more devastated than I normally am when a racehorse dies!

I’ve bought into him. Spottherisk and I were both in with Toast the Host who didn’t die at the races but was pts with a hock infection. I don’t really feel like an owner, but it’s certainly a fun ride, you get videos and updates and things. I do care about my horses. I was terrified this morning that SS would be injured.
BB is a nice looking horse who I think PN spotted and sourced , so fingers crossed. He won’t do much for the next 12 months though, maybe a couple of bumpers. If you want more instant fun Go West is up in May and he looks promising in my very novice opinion.

On Twitter and on here I love reading the enjoyment people get from groups like the OG. There are people who are really negative about these groups as in working out how much money is taken and that not real ownership but that totally misses the point. It is an experience and gets involvement and could encourage people to joint another type of syndicate. I think it makes a fab present as well.

My family and I have at least 10 between us. It is real fun. There have been several winners.

Sadly, one of mine did die before it even set foot on a racecourse and I was really quite upset, despite not really knowing the horse at all. You do become emotionally invested! They also have brood mares if you can't cope with them actually racing ;-)

Sod the photo opportunity snog, just undo the fecking noseband you ***** 😡😡😡. Look at that poor horse's mouth being pulled into a gruesome 'smile' by the snaffle, let alone the chifney as well.

Horse human bond my @rse.

I don't like GE but I noticed yesterday with Delta work his staff member was straight to him getting the noseband off, same with the real whacker. NH staff NEVER undo it, CH one was just left on, unless it was loosened

I presume it's the trainers that instill it in their staff?

The noseband does look to be very tight and blinking heck, please undo it. Im sure horse would appreciate it more than a kiss.

I dont think its a chiffney, but a dexter bit. It seems to be used in racing quite a lot. No idea what it does, Elf, Gamebird, please?

I'm now drawn to people who actually undo them and look to see if they do

I think her bit is used on hard pulling ones as they've mentioned it on TV before, although no idea beyond that, they don't look very nice, what would the benefit be of something like that over one of the stronger bits "regular" horses wear?

The horse actually races with that in its mouth? It's just asking to get hooked up on something during the race. And just look at the discomfort that it must be causing the horse fitted like that.

Use of such a bit should be banned.

And the BHA think that makes for a suitable publicity photo 🙄.

Yes they race with the bit in, as far as I’m aware (I’m sure people here will correct me if necessary), there has never been an accident with a horse wearing a Dexter bit. (Not that I’m saying the bit in this photo is suitably fitting).

The same argument could be said for many of the weird and wonderful combination contraptions present in eventing, polo and showjumping. The amount of equipment polo ponies wear is terrifying.

The BHA aren’t known for being particularly media savvy 🤦🏻‍♀️ They did a whole piece on scraping water as a cooling method to promote welfare despite this obviously not being the advised technique anymore.

Envoi Allen races in one, and clearly without issue!

No idea who Envoi Allen is (I'm no racing fan) but anyone who can't see how potentially dangerous that bleddy great ring protruding from a horse's mouth is re getting hooked up on something and smashing its jaw apart needs to give both their risk assessments and their own heads a darn good wobble.

Well I would hope a horses feet are no where near its mouth and there's nothing else it could get stuck on. The ring isn't actually as big and obnoxious as it looks, that picture makes it look work. We use Tri-bits sometimes at work. They are straight across their ring in the middle of the mouth rather than a full circle.
