Does that statement put you off?
I have had my horse advertised for over a month now and she has not sold despite the fact that farrier and trainer and trainers trainer and friends cant understand why she hasnt been snapped up. She is a chestnut mare and my friend today said
"Is it cos she is a chestnut mare?" But she isnt stereotypical of a `chestnut mare`. She is loving and doesnt get stroppy when in season etc. And I know of people that own chestnut mares who say they wouldnt change them for the world! and they are not typical chestnut mares. So where did this stigma come from originally. I`ve heard the stigma about black mares too, that they are nasty!
I have read posts on here about people not being able to find a horse to buy but are there certain colours that they see eg, `chestnut`, `grey`, that puts them off and they dont even read the advert?
Perhaps forget the stigma that comes with the different colours and just read the advert and take the photo at face value and go and look at the horse. You might be pleasantly surprised ;)
Just a thought. :D

Ahhh bless her!! I have a chestnut gelding & I would have still got him had he been a mare..lol. It's just a colour & can't have any effect on their nature! it's silly..

It wouldn't put me off. I have 2 :) The 9yo is a totally stereotypical chestnut mare :o (I wouldn't change her though). I also have a 2yo chestnut filly who is a delightful little thing and shows no sign at all of living up to the stereotype. You get good and bad of every colour :)

I know someone who would advertise Bay, 16.1' 6yr gelding etc, and when he got a call he would say, oh its been sold, but i a lovely (whatever he really was selling). The trick was to get the the "punters" to call in the first place.

I think colours do put people off - I'd never own a grey or a coloured because I don't want the hassle of keeping them clean :D I have a chestnut mare tho and she's a sweetie :)

I love chestnut mares :D I love that amazing copper sheen in the sun, there's nothing like it :)

But I wouldn't have a grey or a coloured! I am casually on the lookout for another horse now and I'm afraid to say that I won't even consider either :o

They don't worry about colours in Germany! My German friend couldn't believe it when I refused to ride her chestnut and have a thing about chestnuts! Still she also doesn't take no for an answer, so I ended up on said chestnut horse and it did of course rear up and fall over sideways with me - yikes!! Luckily all ok. So I stick to bays - one of mine is however so bright he puts some chestnuts to shame - while still having a black mane and tail! (Thanks to copious amounts of hair dye! ha ha). A lovely person on my yard always parks her chestnut next to him and says he's more chestnut! BTW she is a typical chestnut mare!!
