Just received this by email:
I know from your recent kind rehoming of hens from our rescue that you are someone who cares about chicken welfare. So I am taking the liberty, exceptionally, of passing on the appeal below from Hugh Fearnley Whittingstall.

He is trying to challenge Tesco's record of buying cheap chicken meat from sources which keep chickens in really poor conditions. He is seeking to bring a resolution to the Tesco AGM, calling on Tesco to improve the lives of the chickens it markets. This has been widely publicised in the press and you may already have received this appeal from another source. (In which case apologies).

Tesco is doing all it can to prevent Hugh's resolution going forward - it has now demanded that he finds £87K by noon Wednesday to fund a separate distribution of the resolution to shareholders otherwise they won't let it go forward.
He needs all the chicken lovers of the country to contribute a few pounds to make
this possible. Can you help?

I promise I won't make a habit of "spamming" you like this about the work of other people or organisations. (I have never done this previously, but Hugh has just 2 days to achieve
a miracle so it seemed a bit urgent!)

well, it touched me... my 10 new "batties" (ex-battery hens) are now happily scratching around here, laying eggs, being assaulted by the cockerel (who can't believe his luck). they were a very sorry sight when they arrived, and are now very happy chooks. this appeal will make a difference to millions of chickens' lives.
i've donated a bit already, please please have a look here

if you have a spare £1 or two for such a worth cause. thanks for reading.

I refuse to buy any meat from the Supermarket any more. In fact, I buy as much as I can from local shops anyway. The butcher is much better quality plus you know where it's come from. One day I plan to get some ex battery hens one day when I have the room.

Since his programme I have stopped buying intensively reared chicken and now only buy free range or if not available then those which are RSPCA assured ( yes I know I don't have a lot of time for the organisation). Usually the latter only applies to chicken breasts as quite often the free range are sold out in my local supermarket. Whole chickens are always bought as free range though. I have been having free range eggs ( or if not available barn) for years, in fact I used to get eggs from my last yard at a lot until I moved as they had chickens which were certainly free range, just how chickens are meant to be.
I have a lot of time for Hugh having watched all his programmes from the very start which was tv dinners I think or a programme which was similar named? I know he visited people while they cooked up some sensational meals including placenta at a child's christening

I am a sea angler and my daughter got me the hard back book of his River Cottage fishing for Christmas.
But hear to hear to his campaign and that of Jamie Oliver too.

I don't buy cheap meat or eggs. I either buy free range or organic. I took the decision that given the cost I would rather eat less of it but know it was produced under better circumstances. Will donate at lunch time.

We've got ex-batts...clarissa,eudora,francine and germaine. Araminta, belladonna and demelza were cruelly raken by Mrs Fox a fortnight ago in a 15 min window during a downpour ( I bolted for the house..fox must have been watching...devastating).
I shop and lunch at the River Cott shop/canteen in Axminster and will defo be backing this. Hate Tesco with a passion...
