Chinese city proposes to ban residents from eating dogs

Their traditional medicine is responsible for the near extinction of donkeys in large parts of Africa and increasingly Asia and South America. Their government has been promoting it rather than trying to rein it in. I suppose we'll see what happens with the live markets.
It's the gratuitous cruelty in the way they kill them that I hate.
 
It will just create a huge black market and make the cruelty harder to see but those with control are seen as doing something.
To be honest I don't think I could ever easiest but as with any animal we eat its more about the treatment and life that animal experiences before it end sup on the plate.
I personally believe other countries should apply pressure on the animal welfare standards on countries who that animals so poorly and not try to their own push cultural beliefs onto others.
How can I who eats game, beef, lamb, fish etc tells others they cannot eat dog because I feel eating what I do is ok and eating dog is not? I feel it's a bit hypocritical.

I know what you mean. It's the welfare standards that bother me too, rather than the animals they eat.
 
I also understand and kind of agree but we don’t skin our animals alive or boil them still alive or any of those inhumane things (at least the standards are there to adhere to show us we don’t). The suffering seems to be the “delicacy” aspect with this culture.

I think of you want a culture to stop eating animals like that there has to be global standards or else it is hypocrisy. Yet.... how to police it on a global scale??? It will take decades to change a culture. Decades humans may not have at the rate we are descending into an abyss of self-destruction.
 
Also.... bill the videos of the eating them still alive too.. that was a revelation. Only animals do that. Or so I thought. Seeing that seriously questioned what the hell is going on... I wish I lived a sheltered life.

Eastern medicine is such a strange thing... surely with all the advancements in medicine the WHO could actually have a say about what goes on in China and SEA if it affects the global population like COVID-19 I wonder what the global stance is about this in light of the pandemic...
 
The whole shaboodle of what they eat in China and the way they treat the animals before slaughtering it horribly, frankly disgusts me.

They are supposed to be a modern industrial nation; you won't find any white goods in your house that aren't branded "Made in China" somewhere, yet they continue to torture and mutilate animals in a horrible way, as well as failing to observe even the most basic hygiene precautions.

Result: their country produced and promulgated the SARS virus which was so prevalent - and now we have Corona Virus which has come from China and happened because of the barbaric way in which they slaughter and consume wildlife, and not just any wildlife, engandered wildlife.

I find it hard to be charitable right now towards anything remotely "Chinese" - not only because of their appalling treatment of animals, but also their total disregard of human rights and oppression of their people ..... and now I'll probably be labelled as "racist".
 
It is estimated that 10 million dogs and 4 million cats are slaughtered for the meat trade each year in China. Approximately 15000 dogs are tortured and cooked for the Yulin festival alone.

The dogs are purposely tortured because they believe that the adrenaline released by torture makes the meat sweeter. I will not share the footage of a man holding down the lid of a pot as the dog frantically struggles to escape its fate. Alternatively the dogs may have their skin roasted by a blow torch while still alive.

To call disgusting and inhumane practices such as these "cultural" does not excuse them.

Not that we are blameless. Greyhounds are exported to China from the UK and Ireland to race until they drop, breed until they are no longer capable, then end their miserable lives at the meat market.

It depends what their laws support, doesn't it CC? In terms of their welfare laws, the Chinese appear to allow cruelty institutionally and it appears to have arisen from their culture.

Nope, not going to go there.....

One of the local Greyhound Trust groups recently had a whole load of shit from online keyboard warriors about a greyhound that had gone out to China.... completely, totally, utterly unacceptable I agree, it should never EVER happen. Neither should the mass shooting off sub-standard greyhounds produced like a puppy factory in Ireland, but that’s by the by....

The problem with this campaign was that people were screaming abuse at the volunteers who had dedicated their time, money and effort to helping greyhounds. These volunteers had no control or influence over the charity policy. THAT was what was wrong with the online campaign ☹️☹️☹️

This is true, the article I read today was quoting various sources supporting the idea that most young Chinese people see dogs as pets and don't agree with animal torture. I don't know much about China but from what I read and from speaking to Chinese students it seems that there is a huge gulf between younger, educated, city dwellers and the people who support these kind of "traditional" practices. Obviously that's a very sweeping statement but you probably get the gist. It does make me hopeful that practices like this will eventually (hopefully soon) become confined to a minority. That's without even starting on all the other "issues" on which young educated Chinese people wish to see change.

The problem is that China is a Communist State. Citizens do not have a voice or at the very least their voices are, ahem, stifled. That is why international pressure is paramount. Because, if there is one thing a Communist State will try to avoid is world wide embarrassment due their leaders failings.

Using slavery as an [awful] example.... I have started to imagine that perhaps one day humanity will look back upon eating animals as abhorrent and vile.

I’ve just enjoyed a rather nice steak and I’m starting to feel slightly uncomfortable.

I haven’t eaten mammals since 1985. It’s a bit too close to home.
 
I have no problem with anyone eating an animal, we are omnivores. It is not intentionally causing suffering in the process. The Chinese people who deliberately torture dogs are truly sick individuals, and those who support it are totally complicit.
It would be like hunting if upon catching the Fox you dunked it in boiling water.
