Christmas Pressie for Horse & will you go see your horse on Christmas Day?

My boy will get a bag or 2 of treats. I won't see him this year as its Christmas at the mother in laws (130 miles away) but my mum will be up twice as normal.

Ours are kept in a rented field so there is no one else to go! They get lots of treats and a can of beer in their feeds.
Last year we dressed them in tinsle and took them for a walk, the people who live in the surrounding houses were giving them treats and cuddles too! They loved it.

I don't tell my horses that it is Christmas, I wish I had never told my daughter either!

Same as any other day for me, I will still have 25 horses, 20+ goats to bottle feed, 30+ ducks etc to see to.

Fortunately they are just outside the back door so no travelling involved.

I'll be up in the morning and will try to muck out a couple of extra stables as well as an extra present for my YO. Riding depends on how enthusiastic I feel about getting up at silly o'clock to get food started - I've got the practically-in-laws staying for the first time so I can't just leave OH with a chicken and a list of instructions.

No presents for neddy from me, but he'll almost certainly get some from certain fluffy relatives!

To horses Christmas day is no diferent than any other day, they still need mucking out, turning out etc etc so yes I'll be there as usual, like any other day. I'll be down at the usual time as well.

I will go up in the morning and would usually go up in the evening too but I am going away to visit family so will unfortunately have to ask YMs to do the evening and boxing day morning. We are on assisted DIY so quite normal to go up once a day but they charge £5 for Christmas day and boxing day which is fair enough but I still feel guilty that they have to do him. There are 2 YMs though so they divide it between them for example one has small children and doesn't drink so she has Christmas morning off does the evening and boxing day morning and the other who has teenagers does Christmas morning while they are still asleep :)

I am planning on getting Max a nameplate for his stable :)

On DIY so no-one else to do my girls :) plus I love to see them on Xmas day.
They'll get a can of guinness each in their feeds.
I'll fill their treat balls with lots of nice, healthy treats and leave them with them :D

It will be our first Christmas with the ponies at home so really looking forward to running outside in my PJs and wishing them a happy Christmas.
My highland may be getting a new saddle, I expect he will be more excited but the parsnip trimmings from lunchtime. :)

I have a VERY different Christmas.! After doing various chores, seeing to the dogs & horses, I hitch up the trailer. Yes, I load a horse on & it's off up to the woods for a great ride, my husband takes a dog & we see no one else at all. Christmas lunch is usually sausage & chips, very labour saving, unless invited out. The relatives come around for tea. It's a lovely, stress free day that I can really enjoy.:):)

Another with neds at home so yes I see them before the kids on christmas morning!
My hubby is just about to start riding lessons so hopefully this year we'll be able to sneak in cheeky hack together before the teenagers wake & the family arrive!
Love having the animals at christmas as it gives us a perfectly valid reason to abandon proceedings for a while to get some peace & quiet :-)

That sounds like bliss :) merry Christmas

Perfect. I love a quiet Christmas Day with my horses dog and cats.

I always go to see my horse as soon as I get up so she'll get cuddles and a christmas carrot in the morning and then she'll get presents later when I go to bring her in. Hopefully I can take her on a nice long hack this year, that would be a good way to spend christmas :)

Won't be seeing mine, as I shall be a very long way away! Mucking out and breaking ice on waterbuckets on Xmas morning - or barbie on the beach in Australia - no contest! He'll be fine...

the liveries help each other out on xmas day, some will turn out in the morning and the rest will fetch in, it's the one day the YO has off so we all help each other out.

i have kids and they know that the horses still need to be done on xmas day so they open the majority of their presents before we go to the yard then we go and do the horses for a few hours (between 2 and 4 hours) and then when we get home they get to open their "special" present. it also means that xmas actually lasts the whole day for the kids rather than just an hour first thing!

Always see the horses on Xmas Day, who knows I may even ride this year (if I have the time) but as I always have to drive about on Xmas day I probably won't!

Yes share the chores with my friend so one will do both horses in the morning and one will do both horses in the evening. She always has a can of guiness in her tea. Not sure what xmas pressy yet. Would also love to ride but never have time :( only ridden once on xmas day in the 12 years I've owned her.

She will probably get a special treat. Not sure what yet though. I will likely be working on Xmas also. Why wouldn't u look after your horse on Xmas day? Those who wouldn't should probably take up another hobby.

I will see one of my horses but not the other - I work away from home and keep one horse with me and one horse back home. I'll be going home for Christmas so will only see my old girl at home. She will get carrots and apples in her feed, that's all. Whoever is minding my other horse for me will sort him out like any other day :)

Our horses are at home and always get done "as normal" - but with added goodies and a day or two off work. However this year will be different as my new girly sees days off as punishment and turns into a monster so will probably ride or at least lunge her on Xmas day! They dont need anything but I always wrap something up for them, even if it's just a bag of treats or a likit. My mare may be treated to some fluffy overreach boots or a special numnah this year! They get some molasses in their food and loads of cuddles.

I have lovely memories of spending Christmas mornings when I was a teenager at my riding school. They used to decorate the yard and invite everyone up, with a treasure hunt for the kids and a roaring fire and drinks in the farmhouse for the adults. I think the YOs just enjoyed having kids around the place on Christmas Day, and even my totally non-horsey parents said how much they looked forward to it...perfect way to escape for an hour or two before the relatives descended en masse!

Beer - I like the idea of it, but if they have never had it before is there a real risk of colic?

I only ask as I think ponio would appreciate that present :)

Mine were 7 and 4 years old before they first had any. I added half a can to their feeds and they scoffed it and the bowls get licked cleaner than normal.

I love this thread! It will be my first Christmas with my new horsey (haven't had a horse since I was 11) and so I'm certain we will both get lots of presents, he will get covered in tinsel and reindeer antlers (if he will let me) and I shall proceed to thoroughly embarrass him around the livery yard. I will go and see him for a ride first thing before driving home to te family for lunch and then come back to put him to bed. I'm excited already!!
