I've been a bit silly. I was given some beautiful leather boots for Christmas which I love riding in, but i'm often pushed for time, so I ride, then brush, rug and turn out my pony and am ankle deep in mud as we enter her field. I always rinse the boots within a few minutes, but after a few weeks they are now starting to smell pretty grim!

I have some leather conditioner, but dont want to use that on them if its going to "seal" the smell in. What can I use to give them a good wash before conditioning them?

How do you keep your leather boots clean (they are sort of a brushed leather in places, and textured in others: https://www.google.co.uk/#q=dublin+pinnacle+boots&tbm=shop).

:( Am going to start riding in my wellies!

Do you mean nubuck leather? I scrub my ariat boots with a scrubbing brush and leave them to dry. I think that's the only way to clean them, as like you say you can't use any products.

Thanks noblesteed - i''ve been doing a bit more research about cleaning leather (yes I do mean nubuck) and it seems that the reason you shouldn't use products is because you'll flatten the nap of the leather and it will end up flat like normal leather. My boots are pretty knackered in terms of looking pretty (my fault entirely) so i've bought some glycerine saddle soap and am going to use that to give them a clean and then use some leather conditioner to preserve them. Would rather have flat leather than cracked leather!
