Clicky hips after nasty fall (me, not horse)?

Came off the GreyDonk on Wednesday . . . normally I get up and get straight back on, but a) I was seeing stars - actually had to lie down for a while; and b) I could hardly walk the pain in my hips was so bad. Landed square on my left hip/shoulder.

Several days on, while the pain is undoubtedly better, it's still very much there, my left buttock is still numb, I still can't raise my left leg very high without severe pain (getting the car, for example, is fun!), am still noticeably limping/can't walk normally, have nasty pain deep in my pelvis when standing/walking/sitting, and my right hip clicks almost constantly - loudly enough that people around me can hear it. It doesn't click so much when I walk, b/c that's a straight forward/back motion . . . more when I adjust my weight from side to side or lift my right leg up and/or slightly away from me (when mucking out, for example).

I am concerned enough that I am actually going to go to the docs tomorrow (unheard of for me - I'm notoriously averse to doctors and will only go as a last resort) . . . but wondered if anyone else had experienced something similar and could offer advice/thoughts, etc.?

Thanks in advance.

Ouch ... yes, Docs sounds a good idea. Numbness might just be result of bruising of nerve but would worry me. Best to get it checked out :)

Definately see a doctor as soon as possible, that does not sound good at all!
Your injuries are obviously from the fall but I have really dodgy joints from riding too - my hips, knees and ankles click really badly and I have to wear an ankle brace on my right ankle when riding, cycling or walking on it for any length of time.
Hopefully the doc will sort you out, hope you feel better soon! Unfortunately I think clicking joints are just a part of wear and tear from riding :(

Please do go to the doctors! My daughter had a bad fall when she was about 12 (now 20), riding instructress chased horse on with lunge whip and it went mental, daughter came off hard at speed. I did take her to the hospital because I thought her hip was broken, it wasn't, but she has suffered ever since to the point that any riding causes her loads of pain. Her hips click and they start being painful within minutes of her getting on, she then suffers for days afterwards and so rarely rides at all these days. She has been back to the doctors but they don't seem concerned and tell her not to ride if it causes pain! Please go and make a fuss, make them send you for any scans/xrays etc that you can and make sure there is nothing wrong, please don't put up with the pain because it may come back to haunt you later.

Ouch! I'd definitely get it checked out. I came off 6 weeks ago now, landed square on my hip and shoulder, hip was numb for a couple of days - I could feel it tingling as sensation came back - had huge bruises (thigh, hip and tummy) but the worst was the pain/stiffness in my ribs after a couple of days BUT NO "clicking" so didn't bother with docs (I hate them too :)). Ribs are still sore now but it's not the bones, just the muscles. If it's clicking it sounds a bit worrying - docs or even A&E :(

Yes, the numbness is troubling me a little. Probably nerve trauma, but still. It's the hip clickiness that's really worrying me though . . . the clicks are really audible and if I stand for any period of time and then shift my weight I audibly creak. My biggest worry is arthritis down the road. Right now I walk like a candidate for a hip replacement ;).

Yes, I will call and make an appointment tomorrow. Thing is, it's not just a "click" I can feel a definite mini jolt, if that makes sense . . . and I can hardly wear a brace on my hips!

Sigh.

Point taken and will do. Many thanks :).

Urgh, when you put it like that it doesn't sound very good. A&E for x-ray?

Nah . . . I'll go tomorrow . . . A&E today will be full of drunk idiots who have been watching too much F1 ;). I've done all the big jobs at the yard and the GreyDonk is now in - all that's left is skipping out, nighttime hay and feed.

But I will go tomorrow. I promise :p.

Currently on sofa with feet up watching some amazing tennis.

A&E or somewhere with immediate X-Ray facilities.

You could have a pelvic fracture or a hip fracture.

A GP can't see that without X-Ray vision and he'll just write you a card and tell you to go for an X-Ray.

You could have something unstable that becomes catastrophic with a minor jolt.

Don't be brave or horsey - it confuses medical people. Be 'normal' and admit that it hurts ;)

Really? Wouldn't it hurt more? I mean it hurts . . . but it's not faint-making pain, just I don't wanna do that/OUCH/swear-making pain . . .

I won't be brave . . . but I don't know how not to be horsey ;) . . . and it does flipping hurt. Have just taken three Nurofen and it's still hurty (but the painkillers did take the edge off . . . which does make me think nothing's broken . . . surely broken bones are unbearable even with simple pain relief?).

Not necessarily. My friend fell off a few years ago and hurt her hip. It hurt her for a few days afterwards but nothing she couldn't put up with. Now it is getting so bad she is in so much pain whenever she gets on a horse that she can barely walk for days afterwards. She went for an x-ray and turns out she had fractured her hip and it never healed right, did a lot of damage to the nerves around it too. Definitely see if you can get an x-ray!

Someone I know's just shattered his little finger riding a recalcitrant horse (he doesn't know how, but must have bashed it on neck or something) - he's all wired up internally and in a splint, and he didn't even feel it - only wondered what was wrong when he curled up his fist and that finger didn't go along with the rest... made me think, cos you think that'd be agony.

You could have put your pelvis out slightly. My friend has rotated one hip and is having painful intensive physio to get everything back right. Like you numbness in her case in hips thighs and knee when riding. She left it a year after fall and it's been getting worse to the point having stabbing pain when riding and not wanting to get on so please get yourself looked at asap,

For normal people - yes.

For horsey people and Police officers...no :D.

A hairline fracture is something you can still function on. On the other hand, it could be nothing but internal bruising and swelling pressing on your nerves.

An X-ray is the only way to tell for certain.

The problem with horsey people is that they carry on functioning (albeit slowly) on such injuries and by the time you wander to medical help - they think, "Oh well, they've been walking around OK for a few days...so nothing will be broken...." And hence things get missed :(

Broke one of my little fingers years ago - just leaning on the car. Didn't hurt that much so never realised till it healed crooked! As others have said - A&E would probably be best as doc will/should refer you there anyway for xrays.

Wow! X-rays it is then . . . but I'm still not going to A&E today . . . A&Es are always packed on weekends ;). Will go to docs tomorrow and if he doesn't refer me to A&E for x-ray will go then - should be less busy on a weekday . . . yes, I'm stubborn (but will go . . . ).

What's wrong with horsey people! ;). I actually broke two ribs falling off my boy a year and a half ago and didn't do anything about it until I was still in pain after three weeks . . . we're insane.

Will go to docs/A&E tomorrow, I promise.

See . . . that's what I'm thinking/counting on . . . but I'm probably in denial b/c I don't want to hear/do what the doc in A&E will say if I have done something truly nasty . . . I mean, he still needs mucking out/turning, etc. and I'm on DIY!

I promise I'll go tomorrow and I'll make a fuss if they fob me off . . . ok?

:D

I fell off when I was 18, smacked my head (no hat), smacked my ribs.....couldn't stand up straight or move my arms and went blind for a bit.

Never went to hospital and went to work at the riding school the next day

I know now that I had a concussion and likely a broken rib or two (took up to a year to heal).:p

Ouch - poor girl!

I will get it sorted . . . I did wonder if I was just being a wuss, but it seems not. Would hate to be left unable to ride at all (although as GreyDonk is also currently broken, there's no current rush . . . we can be gimps together!).

Went blind? No hat! Oberon!

Yup . . . broken ribs do take a loooong time. Presume you're alright now?

They didn't jump at the Norfolk show recently did they? My friend was telling me she was beaten in her class by someone who'd done something very similar!

PS- go and get an x-ray. I went yesterday for one and it wasn't even busy. You might get lucky!

I was 18 and thought going for a gallop on my Arab with no tack or hat was a good idea :o

Turns out I was 4 and a half month's pregnant too  :D

It was the first and last time my OH ever saw me ride :D. He was furious that I insisted on crawling to the field to turn the horse back out rather than leave him in the stable with no food or water for the night.....

He did phone the hospital and they said not to bother bringing me in unless I started bleeding from my nose or ears. Knowing what I know now - that advice could have killed me (and my son)

He's a dressage bod so probably not :D Was riding with broken ribs last year too IIRC - but when it's your living ... :( Just relieved that when I was out of action last year with a non-working leg I could just sit in a comfy chair with my legs on the coffee table and get on with my job on the laptop!

Are you still here PS? :D
