Would you clip a horse that wasn't in work?

Last spring/summer two of my beasties that aren't in work clung to their winter coats for months, by the time they'd finally lost all of it they'd more or less started sprouting the new winter coat! They both got very warm last summer and would be sweating just standing around in the field.

So, this spring I'm wondering if it would be better to clip it all off so they are more comfortable. Also I am hoping to show one of them in-hand so she needs a nice healthy looking summer coat and I will be backing/gently working the other one so it would be good if she doesn't get over heated before we even start!

Assuming they'd both be rugged accordingly would you clip them? If so when is the latest I could do it?

I fully clipped my shetland pony out three weeks ago just leaving his legs on. He was constantly damp and sweaty especially around his chest and like yours he took forever to shed his coat. I originally planned on just giving him a bib clip but got carried away! He is so much happier (and naughtier) without all his fur! It's the first time he's ever been clipped and I'll be doing it every year from now on, I have a much happier pony. He is rugged accordingly

Why not?

My elderly little fuzzy sports a smart trace clip & has gone all winter with no rugs (except twice in the daytime she had a waterproof on when v wet).
Its for her comfort as coat is so long, most recent was re-done 3 weeks ago. Also has cushings so sweats down the sides if not clipped

However, I never usually clip past the end of Jan. You 'might' be able to get in there quick if coat has not started dropping tho.
Do the gullet & belly at least - this will give you a tidy line & allow horse to breathe a bit - and you wont need to put rugs on either :)
