My mare is usually turned away for the whole of winter and then some i.e. September to April/May however now I am in a position where I will be able to ride earlier.
I plan to leave her rugless as usual and let her full coat develop and then clip her late Jan/early Feb for when I bring her into work. She'd be doing 20-25 mins brisk walking on a hack 3/4 times a week. Weather permitting possibly 45 mins with some trot. This is the coat she gets if allowed(!):

When i have been at a yard with a school she's been ridden during winter and had a blanket clip. so what clip would you recommend ? Or is Jan/Feb too late to clip?

if you're only mainly walking why dont you start with just a bib clip when you bring her back into work in jan and if you find she's starting to sweat up go for a blanket.

OMG she is so cutely gorgeoous - love the look on her face.

I'd be inclined to do a Belly Bib clip that could start in line with her stifle, down to just behind the elbows then expand around the front of her chest.

Are you planning to rug her in January as this is one of the coldest months and I think clipping her more may not be ideal.

As the weather warms then you could raise the bib to become a low trace clip still coming from the stifle, parallel to the ground but now come above the tops of the legs over the shoulders and follow the jugular lineto the throat.

thanks :p
normally she is out all year round without a rug hence her getting more hairy than she is in the pictures. she'd definitely be rugged up if clipped ! was thinking of a low trace but will see how she gets on with 'belly bib'. thankyou for advice :)
