I'm forward planning here and it may turn out to be unnecessary but I'm after opinions.
My sons pony gets very woolly in the winter and is quite happy to live out unrugged, in fact he hates being stabled! but he gets bad rainscald :( Because he is so woolly it is hard to get to the sores to treat so last year we tried to keep him dry and rugged him only he then sweated and still got it  This year I have found a very lightweight rug that I hope will keep him dry and not make him sweat because the only other alternative I can think of is to clip him just to rug him
Has anyone else had similar problems and what did you find worked? Or if I have to clip what kind of clip do people suggest?

slightly similar, i clip my ones legs because she gets mud fever and its hard to treat with the dense hair she gets in winter, not really the same though, my only input would be when he works ie not wearing the rug is he doing enough to stay warm with out the hair? that would be my only issue and if the answer was yes i would probably clip

Hi
Why not start with a low trace clip ? If you get a fine day you can still leave the rug off but will still keep him a little cooler if you rug him. Definitely start with a light weight and see how t goes.

He doesn't work that hard but I was planning on using an exercise rug when he's ridden. It's a pain when they get so woolly that you can't get to them to treat. :(

I clipped my mare last winter although she was not ridden reason being she gets very scurfy and itchy with a full coat it gets so thick, and even in a light weight turnout makes er hot and then she rubs, she is happier with it taken off and she stays cleaner, I clipped all her body and left the legs on and half of her face, so I would say clip him it worked for my horse.

Thanks I'll give it a go if the lightweight doesn't work.

Yes I did I can even put quite a thick one on when freezing and I have lots of cotton sheet rugs which i change often so its clean on her skin and stops her scratching as the dirty scurfy rugs make her worse.

My girl turns into a wolley mammoth each winter, to the point she is constantly sweaty, itchy and has a belly covered in mud which is awful to clean. Clipped her in a "half Irish" last year and rugged when required, best thing I ever did she was so much more comfortable
