OK, so was just discussing Guilty Secrets with a friend.

SO..... how many of you have committed the following Sins:-

1. Done the horses in open-toed sandals

2. Led in without joddie boots, gloves, hat (BHS yard requirements!!)

3. Just cleaned off the saddle space before riding out and not done a proper groom

4. Just chucked them out in the field afterwards to get on with rolling etc without a proper wash-down etc

5. Ridden without picking out feet first

6. Not cleaned tack since the last time you rode in the rain

7. Not poo-picked - at all

8. Tied up with the reins

9. Used roundings for a pelham instead of two separate reins

9. Ridden in sandals in the summer (OK I DO have safety stirrups with cages!!)

Mea culpa, I confess, for these and my other sins of commission or ommission. I confess my sins and admit my failings; I am a lazy slob and will try to earnestly better myself:)

Anyone else wish to confess?? Confessional is now free................:):):)

1. Done the horses in open-toed sandals -yep!

2. Led in without joddie boots, gloves, hat (BHS yard requirements!!) - I always do this! Prob should at least wear gloves though given I bring in a few sprightly ones!

3. Just cleaned off the saddle space before riding out and not done a proper groom - I can't do this. Know many that do but I'm a bit OCD in that respect. Could never ride without brushing his tail at the very least!

4. Just chucked them out in the field afterwards to get on with rolling etc without a proper wash-down etc - same as above. Always wash down or at least sponge off.

5. Ridden without picking out feet first - as above, can't do that!

6. Not cleaned tack since the last time you rode in the rain - Yep, guilty!

7. Not poo-picked - at all - don't have to at yard I'm at, phew.

8. Tied up with the reins - noo!

9. Used roundings for a pelham instead of two separate reins - sinful! :P

9. Ridden in sandals in the summer (OK I DO have safety stirrups with cages!!) - yes done this, and barefoot as well! Horse had no saddle on though, don't think I could have done that with stirrups!

Brilliant ones there, OP!

1, Yes but very rarely and now never after seeing a nice foot injury after a shoed horse stood on a bare foot!

2, Yes all the time- I never wear hats and gloves to lead, unless cold or about to ride!

3, Yes I have just groomed where tack sits, but only when pushed for time

4, Will at least flick off or sponge very quickly

5, No- would hate to do damage if there was a stone/issue and I had not checked!

6, Guilty

7, Yard does it- but when I move to assisted I will be a good livery and do it :D

8, Never.

9, Yes

10, Nope never ridden in sandals or barefoot (Read answer 1!!)

5. Ridden without picking out feet first - Must have done at some point

6. Not cleaned tack since the last time you rode in the rain - Yep

7. Not poo-picked - at all - True until a couple of years ago - HHO is bad for you ;)

8. Tied up with the reins - Does hooking over a gatepost count?

9. Used roundings for a pelham instead of two separate reins - But of course!

9. Ridden in sandals in the summer (OK I DO have safety stirrups with cages!!) - Nope

SO..... how many of you have committed the following Sins:-

1. Done the horses in open-toed sandals .......YES, a rare occasion.

2. Led in without joddie boots, gloves, hat (BHS yard requirements!!) ..YES. All the time, unless bringing in a crazy.

3. Just cleaned off the saddle space before riding out and not done a proper groom.....YES. If time is very short, better to ride a muddy but comfortable horse than not ride at all.

4. Just chucked them out in the field afterwards to get on with rolling etc without a proper wash-down etc. ...YES, but rarely and not when flies are about.

5. Ridden without picking out feet first...NO, not that one.

6. Not cleaned tack since the last time you rode in the rain...YES. (Daughter went swimming in the sea and didn't clean a bespoke saddle and it survived until I quizzed her and rescued it.)

7. Not poo-picked - at all ...YES. but depends on the yard.

8. Tied up with the reins...NO. never.

9. Used roundings for a pelham instead of two separate reins.....NO, never.

9. Ridden in sandals in the summer (OK I DO have safety stirrups with cages!!)...YES,once or twice.

I'm sure I do lots of bad things but I'd say I am quite safety conscious with horses in general and my own horses are very sensible around me.

Erm...
1. Rarely
2.my current horse - always. My previous horse - add a body protector to that list.
3. yes
4. occasionally
5. Rarely
6. All the time
7 A bit OCD about poo picking.
8. Never.
9 Yes
9 I think I did once.

1. Done the horses in open-toed sandals - Never. I don't own any open-toed sandals, my feet are too ugly!

2. Led in without joddie boots, gloves, hat (BHS yard requirements!!) - Constantly. Personally I find joddie boots slippy on the hillside, but as for gloves and hat, I have no excuse

3. Just cleaned off the saddle space before riding out and not done a proper groom - All the time in winter. Though I do brush where the bridle goes too. Why clean off the lovely mucky insulation when beastie is going to be chucked out in the cold again afterwards?

4. Just chucked them out in the field afterwards to get on with rolling etc without a proper wash-down etc - Not recently I don't think

5. Ridden without picking out feet first - Never. And especially not since share gelding came in with a piece of glass in the mud in his hoof. No idea where it had come from, and it wasn't actually touching any part of his foot, but the thought of it getting pressed in by riding made me break out in a cold sweat!

6. Not cleaned tack since the last time you rode in the rain - Guilty. So guilty.

7. Not poo-picked - at all - Once or twice

8. Tied up with the reins - Never. However, I have to confess to simply saying 'stand' and letting go. I that worse?

9. Used roundings for a pelham instead of two separate reins - Not since I was a kid. Very strong pony but hands too small and riding ability too much like that of a lemon to use separate reins.

9. Ridden in sandals in the summer (OK I DO have safety stirrups with cages!!) - Again, don't possess sandals. I did ride bareback in a swimming costume and wellies last summer though. Yes, I looked SMASHING! *cough*

1. Done the horses in open-toed sandals - NEVER!

2. Led in without joddie boots, gloves, hat (BHS yard requirements!!) All the time :)

3. Just cleaned off the saddle space before riding out and not done a proper groom - Yep, unless its a show day!

4. Just chucked them out in the field afterwards to get on with rolling etc without a proper wash-down etc - Yes if its just a bit of a girth mark. If its hot, I'll hose off then chuck out to roll.

5. Ridden without picking out feet first - Yes on occasion, but ponies are both barefoot and they do get a proper pick at least once a day.

6. Not cleaned tack since the last time you rode in the rain - Erm, what is this tack clean you speak of?

7. Not poo-picked - at all - Do it daily as I am OCD.

8. Tied up with the reins - Never

9. Used roundings for a pelham instead of two separate reins - Nope, can't see the point in the roundings at all. 2 reins here at all times.

9. Ridden in sandals in the summer (OK I DO have safety stirrups with cages!!) Nope. I only ride in Jodhs and proper boots no matter the weather.

All but no.8, which I would never do. 5 I have done but only by accident when my mind was elsewhere and I completely forgot! Wouldn't do it 'knowingly'. 2 I do every single day - there are no rules on my yard lol!

1. Done the horses in open-toed sandals... Never sandals, but I have gone into field in regular shoes. A week or so ago, I tottered in about midnight (it stays bright here in Scotland at this time of year!) to give two horses their buckets... wearing deck shoes. Ended up loosing balance, tottering backwards into horse (Prosecco may have had something to do with this...) who stepped aside catching the back of my heel with his hoof. Was only able to wear long boots for the following week due to bruised achilles. I will still go into field wearing deck shoes, but might avoid the Prosecco in future ;)

2. Led in without joddie boots, gloves, hat (BHS yard requirements!!)... All the time.

3. Just cleaned off the saddle space before riding out and not done a proper groom... All the time (saddle, girth area, bridle area).

4. Just chucked them out in the field afterwards to get on with rolling etc without a proper wash-down etc.... Sometimes, but horse doesn't sweat much if at all.

5. Ridden without picking out feet first... All the time. If we get out the gate and I can hear a stone or grit in white line, I'll remove it. Otherwise, a bit of packed earth in the hoof adds support ;D

6. Not cleaned tack since the last time you rode in the rain. Yes, afraid so.

7. Not poo-picked - at all. Yes, as a rebellion when the two other lazy gits I was sharing the field with refused to do anything and I was collecting poo for 4 horses, only one being mine.

8. Tied up with the reins. No, I usually have a bridle with a lead rope attachment.

9. Used roundings for a pelham instead of two separate reins. No, when I took over a horse with a pelham, I added a second rein *smug that I got at least one right*

9. Ridden in sandals in the summer (OK I DO have safety stirrups with cages!!)... Nope. Mainly because I don't like sandals :D

You can add to that list... Rugged horses up in middle of field without headcollars/tying them up first (sometimes in gale force winds). Fed two horses out of 5 in middle of field. Tacked up with horse loose, doing saddle first (I always do this so he can walk away if there's an issue with the saddle - he never has yet). Too many other sins to even mention I think...

All apart from 8 on a fairly regular basis! When i was first learning to ride at the age of 5 i once tried to tie a horse up by its reins...i swiftly got grabbed and stopped by one of the yard staff!! Never tried it again funnily enough!

1. Done the horses in open-toed sandals - yes, but carefully!!

2. Led in without joddie boots, gloves, hat (BHS yard requirements!!) - every day

3. Just cleaned off the saddle space before riding out and not done a proper groom - probably more often than not!

4. Just chucked them out in the field afterwards to get on with rolling etc without a proper wash-down etc - only if there is no trace of sweat, I hate dry sweat!!

5. Ridden without picking out feet first - never!

6. Not cleaned tack since the last time you rode in the rain - in Britain? Tack cleaning is not on my agenda every day ;)

7. Not poo-picked - at all - We don't poo pick

8. Tied up with the reins - never

9. Used roundings for a pelham instead of two separate reins - yes!

9. Ridden in sandals in the summer (OK I DO have safety stirrups with cages!!) - possibly when I was a child, but I wouldn't now!

Guilty of all, except I never go near horses in sandals.
However, does no.2 count as I never lead them in - just open field gate & the 3 of them trot down lane & put themselves in stable, so technically I'm not leading without gloves & hat (but still don't think BHS would approve!)

I'll add one to the mix as I am interested in the answer.

11) Ridden your horse to or from the field bareback and/or hatless?

Never been near my horses in open shoes I like walking too much. I have ridden without picking out feet, I check feet but don't alway pick them out.

OK, so was just discussing Guilty Secrets with a friend.

SO..... how many of you have committed the following Sins:-

1. Done the horses in open-toed sandals -- no

2. Led in without joddie boots, gloves, hat (BHS yard requirements!!) --always lol,

3. Just cleaned off the saddle space before riding out and not done a proper groom--hell yeah

4. Just chucked them out in the field afterwards to get on with rolling etc without a proper wash-down etc-- hell yeah again

5. Ridden without picking out feet first-- yes

6. Not cleaned tack since the last time you rode in the rain-- ride in the rain, i don't think so!

7. Not poo-picked - at all-- nope have to do it

8. Tied up with the reins-- no

9. Used roundings for a pelham instead of two separate reins-- yup

9. Ridden in sandals in the summer (OK I DO have safety stirrups with cages!!)-- no

I also don't wash feed buckets every day!! :o

Guilty of all, bar number 8, at some point, number 8 would never ever even cross my mind, same as clipping lead rope onto bit, never ever.

Have ridden from the field bareback and hatless, and dont wash buckets everyday

Gee folks, you're making me feel SO much better :)

Oh and I add to my Sin List the unpardonable crime of changing rugs in the field while horses were eating. Not done it a lot, but yes, have dunnit (blushes). In mitigation, my excuse being that the weather was foul and about to change for the worst, and speed was of the essence.

Anybody else got any other heinous sins not mentioned here??? Any lurkers out there with sin on their conscience?

Make a clean breast of it and confess all, you know you want to .........

I think I could add few to that list quite easily :)

I take my mare's fly rug off and replace it daily whilst she is grazing in the field. Sometimes whilst wearing sandals, with no hat or gloves. Lol! Though the sandals bit is not often - usually if I have an impromtu stop by the field on the way back from the pub with the OH. I have also done the cardinal sin of letting go of my horse in the arena whilst I put poles out etc etc. She just stands in the centre, though I do assess what sort of mood she is in that day first.

Yep, all but 9, because they are only down the garden I often turn them out in my jim jams and dressing gown so I can go and be lazy for a bit longer!

SO..... how many of you have committed the following Sins:-

1. Done the horses in open-toed sandals

No way never! Makes me cringe just thinking about it.

2. Led in without joddie boots, gloves, hat (BHS yard requirements!!)

I never wear hat or gloves to lead my own but always wear suitable footwear.

3. Just cleaned off the saddle space before riding out and not done a proper groom

Yes occasionally.

4. Just chucked them out in the field afterwards to get on with rolling etc without a proper wash-down etc

I would normally brush or sponge off. I hate to see sweat stained horses in the field, it is uncomfortable and unhealthy.

5. Ridden without picking out feet first

Yes she's barefoot so doesn't really collect debris.

6. Not cleaned tack since the last time you rode in the rain

Oh yes! :-o

7. Not poo-picked - at all

Never do. We don't on our yard.

8. Tied up with the reins

No another one that makes me cringe, and I'm too tight to risk having to replace broken reins.

9. Used roundings for a pelham instead of two separate reins

Not since the 80s

9. Ridden in sandals in the summer (OK I DO have safety stirrups with cages!!)

No the footwear really bothers

:)

Am I forgiven for my sins against horsemanship?

All except 9 (the first 9 as I think roundings are the spawn of Satan).

Mind you, most of the time, I don't bother to tie up at all, the ponies are unshod and I apparently have no regard for my own personal safety...
