Co- owning a puppy... (with pics!!)

Right, thanks for all the replies, really didn't expect such a lot!!

I emailed the co owner the the bitch last night, and got a very nice reply:

Today I talk to people and if they agree to make their by available to sire one or two litters I make them Co-own the dog to assure that they really mean what they say. It also assures that the dog cannot mate a KC registered bitch (and yes, puppy farmed bitches are also KC registered) that is not to my liking.
The contract will clearly state that the dog will live with you and that I will never take possession of him. Give me a day or two and I will send the contract to you so that you can
read through it.
You will still own the boy and he will never be taken from you.
She is going to send through a contract soon for us to read through. I really do believe that they are only looking at
improving the breed, so i see no problem in letting them choose the bitches, I don't know much at all about breeding dogs so it's a relief to me tbh. I have seen for myself how picky they have been in finding homes for the current litter, and they are still in contact with nearly all dogs bred by the,
going back years!!
I think I would be happy with this arrangement as long as the contract states that he will not be used prolifically as a stud dog, and that if at any time for behavioural/ medical reasons he needs to be castrated then that's ok!

If you are paying full price then tell them no way. If you choose to stud him you might as well get the money - you're certainly going to be the one left with the hassle.

It goes on all the time round here. Its a farce. Owners are left with dogs that are hyper, peeing everywhere in the house etc. If you're not used to a stud dog then its not easy to keep them as a pet. Personally, I wouldnt keep a stud dog as an indoor pet - the smell would drive me nuts. Entire dogs have a far stronger smell - it seems to increase once they have studded.

Basically they are conning you. You pay full money and they get free use of the dog. Let them come to you and pay you stud fee if you really want him used. If he's that good then that shouldn't be a problem. I bet they dont bother if they had to pay for it though - so much for "improving the breeding".

Sorry about the rant - this is a personal bug bear of mine. I see it all the time and its just breeders screwing owners over by telling them whatever to save them money.

That sounds perfectly reasonable to me.

A responsible breeder protecting their lines :)

See thats what i think!! i really don't have a problem with not getting stud fees =/ i don't want him for the ££ i want him because he is a LOVELY dog! and if one day we ended up with a little pup by him that i would be happy with that =D !! if anything at least this way i know they are always around for support, and to teach me how to show him properly!!!!???

Just to add that I have kept stud dogs in the house, and know of many other people who have done so and have never had trouble with them peeing everywhere, nor have I noticed a strong smell. In fact in season bitches make far more mess in the house imo.

I agree with Skippys Mum on this.

If they want to protect their bloodline and have control over what the dog mates with then they should keep him themselves. I certainly would not be entering into this sort of ownership.

If I were in your shoes Im afraid I would have to gulp back the disappointment and look for another pup.

I've never had any problem with my stud dogs either, but then they are raised as house pets and toilet trained like all of the others, and are well socialised. I think a lot of the problems can come from just being stuck out in a kennel all the time.

See, all of the things mentioned here, is why I will never have a dog in partnership!!!!
Sorry, but I would just buy him outright if that is possible.

ditto this

id walk away if 'co-ownership' sprung up.....

and i wouldnt keep an entire male dog in my house as they are a pain in the a55.

Its not always that easy. You cant keep everything or you'd not be able to devote enough time to the individual dog. Maybe they have two equally good pups but can only keep one, this is the ideal way for the breeder to keep an interest in the dog but not have to be hands on with raising it.

And the "owner" gets a dog that is there own, to be raised as their own, and gets as much help and advice in preparing the dog for the show ring (with the breeders name on it they will want to make sure its ready) as well as a knowledgable person dealing with the matings which may well allow them to have pick of a very nice litter.

If they also get a cut of the stud fees then that is a very good deal IMO :)

I'm just not getting this. Jake and Brig were never neutered (yeah, shoot me, they were never unsupervised and never tried to jump the neighbour's GSD bitch with whom they grew up).

Other than a normal doggy smell, I don't think Brig stinks nor is he a pain in the a55. He and Jake never fought except puppy playfighting. Am I the exception rather than the rule in that my entire dogs were never a pain/smelly?

I have also kept a stud dog in the house, with another entire male and two bitches without any problems.

I will just add that it is very unusual to keep two male shibas together at all, i was very lucky with my boys :)
