Mr cob is a senior citizen, he's in his 20s and has been diagnosed with cushings over the winter.

Out in the field today was the first time I've looked at him and thought "you look old".

It brought a tear to my eye (I'm soft) and I only hope I can do the very best for him, it has now dawned on me that he's in his twilight years.

He's taught me how to ride again. Taken advantage of me at times. Been completely unruly and tested my nerve. I've gained my confidence and learned how to sit to his various spooks and quirks. He's even managed to bring my OH to the cob side.

I guess what I'm trying to say is make every minute count, he's a lovely and lively old fella and I owe it to the old fella.

I know what you mean. My own old lad is looking his age this year too. It makes me sad to think that he won't always be there.

Massive hugs, wish I could turn back the clock for the old ones x

Came back to edit out my second 'x', felt all odd to me :) far too soppy with two!

i think we all feel extra older at this time of year especially with the length of the winter, and still spring doesnt seem to be here!!!!!!! once the sun shines and the grass grows im sure he will look and feel a bit younger..my mare is 22 and has cushings and this winter she has lost loads of weight and im running out of feed options so hoping the grass comes soon....

Bless you.
I had my old boy back from a loan home because I wanted him back to be old with me but my god it was a shock. He went a Bolshy fit pony and I cried buckets when he came back.
However I soon realised I was now really able to just enjoy being with him with no pressure, we had the best last years and I cherish it. Just enjoy him and spoil him xx

Oh don't set me off! I have had my old mare all my adult life in fact struggle to remember life before her!...and cannot imagine being without her. :(

My little boy is only 7 but I've had him since weaning and he'll be with me for life. He's just about my best friend, we have little chats about everything, and je's been my focus through some bad personal times. I rely on him to make me smole every day no matter what else has gone on. The thought of not having him around and seeing his cheeky little face every day makes me cry already! Assuming his life pans out without any major problems I'll still have him for another 25 years....god alone knows what I'll be like when he goes to the big green field in the sky, I'll be inconsolable!!!!

Sorry posted too soon!

.... So I really feel for anyone who has a golden oldie who is starting to look old or get a bit doddery, I hope they continue to have a glint in their eye and a spring in their step for as long as they can and when the time comes it is swift and painless for all our beloved neddies x

I know exactly how you feel, I have a rising 20 home bred mare that for the first time ever is looking on the thin side and old coming out of the winter. It just brings home to you that they getting on a bit, something I had not thought of as our last horse we lost at the age of 35 so didn't really think of my mare as even being elderly. Must say though that as the weather has dried up she has improved and looks a happier girl so I hope yours starts improving as the weather warms up a bit.

I am along way off fingers crossed with any of ours but this winter has really taken it out of me...I feel 75! So can only imagine how the horses are feeling...I bet when the summer arrives you horse will look a million dollars again.

its horrible, my boys in his late twenties and is starting to look his age, condition not great after the very long winter but hes still happy
he broke the feed room door this morning as I wasnt getting his breakfast quick enough!!!. Lets hope we get a nice summer for these oldies (and us too!)
