Yes, a situation exacerbated rather than diminished by your contribution.

ha ha - well thats a bit daft - I have ridden in plenty of P2Ps and hunted a fair bit so can cope with pretty much anything thats thrown at me, so im not just a cob rider - I ride a cob because I saw her for sale and wanted her - still no idea why but the best equine I've had so far.

There is no type of horse that I would be embarrassed to own - I love them all and they all have their good points and bad points. Thats the great thing about the equestrian world - each and every horse is different and it makes things oh so interesting!

Personally, when out hunting, I set out in the morning looking at all the flashy types who look fab, but by then end of the day, when there are very few left, I am glad I am on my steady old cob who will keep going to the end!!

Yes, but the rest of the field is, by then, either 20 miles away, or home.

Yes they are such wooden plods.... and aren't all people who ride cobs rubbish, I'd never dare put them on anything else especially not my 18.2 warmblood, it would kill them in seconds!

I'm glad you agree with me.
I think as soon as they can ride, cob-owners should lose the fat hairy things and buy a proper horse - a TB or a Warmblood, for example.
I mean, you wouldn't keep wearing nappies as an adult would you? And you take the 'L' signs off your car when you've passed your test. Same thing.

I burst out laughing when I read that and I'm in a quiet office!!

Very good!

We shouldn't make fun though, everyone has to start somewhere. I'm sure all the cob owners will get themselves a proper horse. when they learn to ride.

Oooo you lot just wish you could ride a cob, your not that great a rider so the less horse underneath you the better you couldn't handle anything more!!

My maxi can I will do anything that any finer type can and will come home sound and un injured at the end of it.

I was a tb girl but fell in love with my boy and bought him and am now converted! He will stay at the front all day and jump anything out hunting. he will happily throw off an idiot so please one of you come and have a go!

Well given the choice of my stunning 16.3 WB whose idea of a solo hack was to rear, nap and generally be a pain where you could never relax, my TB that had to jog everwhere and you never ate 2 hours before riding her. My other TB that had to spook at dark patches of grass, run backwards at anything that was not there the day before or my gypsy cob who now just 4, did his first solo hour long hack Sunday, past people shooting clays within 20', mad dogs, screaming kids, garden machinery, tractors, galloping horses in the field next to the bridleway and not a flinch, nap or spook at anything....

Difficult choice .....

Then the same hairy cob went reserve champ at showing second time out, beating all the TBs, WBs, and will beat them at dressage, XC and SJ (albeit not top level) as my last one did constantly.
wink.gif
He also turns heads everywhere with his stunning looks and super manners.

I have done my fair share of fast and furious and fast for 30 years, then had a loan of my first hairy cob and for me now, no going back - am totally totally addicted to gypsy cobs and heavy horses.

Personally I was more embarrassed on the beautiful but temperamental WB than I ever have been on my beautiful to look at, with manners to die for cobs.

Each to their own.

LOL at the people taking this post seriously. One day we'll all wise up to Shilasdair, ignore her posts, and leave her being sarcastic all alone.

Well since we're stirring (:P) i would rather have a lovely traditional hairy coloured cob with a mega long mane than a boring bay warmblood that blends into the crowd (eg 90 % of warmbloods). I'm not a warmblood/tb fan at all... i have expensive taste (which is why i dont have my own horse lol) If anyone is giving an andalusian or arab away for free ... ? hehe

As much as I like natives, and horses with more bone - I have to say I'm not wildly keen on the bigger cobs as riding horses, for driving maybe. However there is little that can beat a fit light-medium weight cob that is turned out nicely as a good all-rounder. Equally there are many that are quite badly put together and called cobs.

But to repeat somebody else's question, what is a cob? Is it anything that doesn't fit into a breed register with plenty of bone and a tendency to hairyness? The lighter ones have often had a dash of TB in the breeding to give them a little more elegance, so maybe we should call those warmbloods and turn the whole argument on it's head

Ditto, although I am sure that as a pony-mad child I would have been over the moon if someone had given me a cob!! . . . . . but I would never choose one. . . . . . I don't "do" clompy/hairy of any sort (inc v hairy natives!)

Please people. Wise up. She's taking the P. Royally. Cobs and warmbloods have different uses and are bought by different people with different tastes. Just as not all cobs are plods, not all warmbloods are talented. Personally, i'll stick to my ISH, but that's another debate!

I think that some of your answers to this post are a complete disgrace and sadlydo everything ,to reinforce the general publics at large image of horse riders as being pretentious, arrogant and having more money than sense.

I had the pleasure of riding across Great Britain some years ago with a jockey that had beaten cancer to win the Grand National and he was more than happy to ride cobs on our sponsored charity ride.

The Queen organised a reception for us on our arrival at Buckingham Palace and was more than happy to meet all the horses including a number of hairy heavy cobs that completed the ride.

Your comments may have been made in jest but have done you absolutely no credit whatsoever.

Cobs embaress me! My horse (not cob!) is a bit racist and often whips round and takes off if confronted with one in a warm up occasionally leaving me sitting in front of them! I have toold him he should look in a mirror sometime - he's not as flash as he clearly thinks he is!

I sold my cob last year to a friend on the same livery yard, she's the only person that does not have the vet out all the time or the back person, can ride out in the the any traffic, on her own, can take to any event, no loading probs, never spooks and yes he has got a pulse!
grin.gif
never falls off (maybe thats because he's like a table top but thats another story) and basically do as she wishes with him no hang ups or problems.....if only I hadn't sold him
frown.gif

having said that my WB seems pretty laid back and rather sane and everyone warned be not to get one
