I am collecting my new horse on Saturday :D Yay! He is a Gypsy Cob and is currently hogged and clipped.

I usually love hairy cobs, but worried about going through the 'bog brush' stage with his mane and wonder whether it's easier to just keep him hogged?

So, to help me decide, can I see pictures of your cobs, both Hogged & Hairy?! :)

hogged! used to be hairy about 5 years ago and has slowly got less hairy until we decided to hog him last summer and haven't regretted it, sooo much easier theres no plaiting and no rubbed out manes!

I love them both. If it had a really nice mane and I could keep it that way I would probably go hairy. If not then hog. Debating whether to hog my girls when I clip her as the top half is unmanageable and the bottom half is rubbed out by her rug every winter.

I prefer them hairy. I have hogged my old girl before but hated it let it grow back out, it didn't take long to get past the bog brush stage. My youngster is staying hairy as i love all the mane, tail and feather despite how much it takes to keep it looking right.

She has more feather now as she is a year older but don't have recent photos of her on pb.

Hogged! Or at least I think hogged looks neatest with my cob...

He had a bush of a mane when we bought him and for the first couple of years so we chopped it off and he looks so much smarter. Easier to keep clean etc. We also take his feathers off for same reason, and he has sore skin on his legs so with feathers off it's much easier to access and look after sore bits! I think they look much better de-haired :)

I think if your cob can pull off being hogged, hog him! I think it is so smart. And practical. But they have to to be handsome with a good neck. Whatever you decide, post pictures, I love cobs!

Love your cob ShmellyEm!

i love the look of the show cobs all hogged and trimmed but nothing beats a beautiful long flowing mane i think it makes them look softer! but if hes already hogged has a good neck to carry it off and he looks smart i'd keep him hogged! much easier over winter especially! also if your using neck rugs on him they may rub out bit of mane if your growing it so i'd suggest if your going to grow it out - best do it early next year :) pictures please!

Hogged and trimmed!! :)

this.

well turned out cobs look quality and smart as a cob should be. I dont think you can beat it

just my opinion though. I prefer my cobs to look handsome and workmanlike. Much easy to keep clean too with less hair, although i know others prefer the natural hairy gypsy vanner traditional type.

Its all down to personal preference really. no way is right or wrong IMO

Totally agree with this, that's why I don't know what to!

I don't have any pictures of him at the moment, but will take some at the weekend once he is home and let you guys decide!!

Hogged! So smart, and really shows off a good neck and handsome face.
Ok, any excuse to post pics of my pair :p This is my 3 year old:

He's got a bit more filling out to do, but will hopefully make a nice chunky maxi cob. He's standing 16.1hh at the moment, has 9.5 inches of bone and wears a 50 inch girth :D
My little cob mare is hogged too, it took me ages to pluck up the courage to do it though! She looks much tidier now. I did intend to do some local level working hunter with her, but bad weather and show cancellations put paid to that this season :( never mind, at least she looks smart for hunting now! Here she is:

(Yes, that is her forelock tucked between her ears! I left it on for a week for my poor mum - who likes fluffy cobs - to get used to the hog then I whipped the forelock off, because it really did look ridiculous!)

I've just had this dilemma

This is pips all hairy:

And the other day he had his feather chopped off as he'd chewed/bog burnt them. He loos SOOOO smart hogged but it's scarligious to chop all his beautiful mane off!

I think it depends on the horse. If you want to show as a show cob, then it has to be tall enough. i.e. between 14.2 and 15.1, and substantial.
It has to have that indefinable thing - 'quality'.

Star was hogged when I got her, but at 14.2, she simply wasnt tall enough or have enough length of rein. She simply wasn't the correct 'type' to show as a show cob. She has been far more sucessful as a hairy, and funnily enough, she looks more substantial as well.

I have the opposite dilemma - I hate the thought of looking after all this hair over the winter, on clay soil - but can't bear to hog!

Might feel different come the spring of course :D

If I was you, I'd put the whole lot in mane and tail bags through the winter!
