Hey guys
My lovely horse went down with spasmatic colic (excuse bad spelling) I recognised the signs and called the vet!

He said I caught it early and he gave her buscapan and something else and he's hopeful that its fine! He took her off food for 24 hours. She has to stay out on the paddock as I don't have a stable again he says that's not a problem really.

I've been checking on her every hour she seems fine she stopped rolling lying down and is back to her actual moodie self 😂 earlier she was so cuddly which is most unlike her! What I want to no is... How often would you guys check on her I've been every hour checking temperature etc.

In terms of feeding when do I reintroduce it? No 24 hours shea on baileys low Cal balancer with a small amount of gut balancer she has a sensitive ummy ever since I rescued her a year ago (vet thinks gut damage from worms) shed worth every penny!!

Any advice on this colic what to do etc I would really appreciate as ive never felt with it before xx

If it is spasmodic, it can come and go. If 5pm tonight it's still probably uncomfortable and so I would phone the vet for guidance. Calls normally are free, and are good at settling your mind, or if necessary, the vet can make to decision to return. Your vet can suggest what to start feeding after the 24hrs, or they might advise to try a sloppy mash to get the fluids up and gut moving.

I am sorry showed at 5 vet came 5.30 sorry im not best at writing etc xx

Don't worry about your writing skills. With the vet seeing your horse at 5.30 this evening you do need to keep checking the horse very regularly and at least hourly for a good while yet. She sounds like she was more than just uncomfortable if she was found rolling. Has you vet left you with emergency contact details for him should you be worried about the horse ?

Yea I have all numbers if nessercy out now and seems fine x

The drugs will keep the horse comfortable and hopefully you will see her pass droppings and drink water as normal very soon. It is a worrying time for you and very tiring, but it is worth keeping a close eye on her through the night. Do you have anyone who can help you or even just keep you company. Please don't under estimate colic, it is always classed as an emergency and such an unpredictable problem.

It sounds like you need to put her on a daily probiotic. May be worth discussing with your vet as to which oneI would also think about strip grazing her field during this spring/summer so you can give her a couple of feet of grass every day. Might not sound a lot but amazing how quickly and thickly the grass comes through given the right weather conditions.Gassy spasmodic colic is due to excess gas from the fermentation of the grass in the hind gut.Its normally easy to treat with bute and an antispasmodic injection.

sorry to hear about your horse but as this is the same horse with the loose droppings I would want to be speaking to your vet about about this as I know you have had her on a gut balancer, I hope she is better this morning.

So pleased to hear your horse is improving - I'm going through the same today/tonight with one of mine.....hope I have the same improvement! Who said owning horses was easy??

Thanks for your concern - he seems to be on the mend - I've just turned them all out for a couple of hours (vets advice) and he's happily grazing...he's a total stress head at the best of times so it was deemed best to let him relax in the field.....I'm shattered though!

glad your horse is on the mend. A friends horse kept getting gassy colic due to the rich grazing. She tried muzzles but thehorse would loose them and then gorge and get colic. She tried restricting the grass by strip grazing which worked and after a colic attack she would turn the horse out for an hour over a period of two or three days before upping the turnout hours very gradually for a week at a time. These were the only two things that worked. Her horse got splenic entrapment twice but luckily was resolved quickly .its like a ticking time bomb for him and she is dreading the grass this spring and has reduced her horses paddock by two thirds already before the grass starts coming through so she can gradually increase the strip grazing a foot at a time every day.The vet says her horse is just very sensitive and its intestine is higher than most so any gas pushes it up and it gets stuck. Its on a probiotic with a prebiotic periodically. Some horses especially continental imports we've noticed are very sensitive.
