Good morning :)

i rode a friends horse last night who is working to a much higher level than my own girl and is a lot more forgiving....riding him has revealed that i have started to collapse through the left side of my waist. :(

I think this is new thing and it could be related to a fall i had a couple of months ago. I went for bowen not long after and the left hand side of my pelvis was higher than the right and I could be compensating still.

Does anyone else have this problem? Are there any exercises i can do or feelings i can try to imagine to stop me doing this?

Since i've realised i'm doing it i've tried to imagine my left side filling up with muscle rather than over compensating and ending up collapsing on the right side to make up for it but i think doing this whilst riding might be a tad harder!

Any advice would be appreciated and MnS cashew nut cookies are on offer :D

i'm quite strong in the area, just wonky. I think physio would help as i could get some exercises to do i guess.

I need a giant waste splint i think....or an electric shock thing to zap me every time i collapse left.

I do the same thing after I was kicked a few years ago.

I went to see an Osteo who said my right pelvis was higher (I am opposite to you!) & he did some work but I never noticed any difference (went to see him for a number of months) I gave up in the end as it was costing a fortune & it was causing me a lot of pain & I didnt think it was worth it.

I now ride with my left stirrup 3 holes longer than my right to try to compensate, I am hoping I will in the long term be able to go back to riding normal, but I am just experimenting for a few months first to see if it helps!

Good luck!

Blimey! not that bad yet but maybe you should try bowen too?

I had shoulder issues which physio and chiro wouldn't touch - oh and acupuncture. Bowen righted me in a few months and i don't really get those problems anymore. :) very uninvasive too and taught me to be a lot more body aware.

Thanks for the tip RE Bowen - will give it a go if I get no luck with what I am doing, I have been doing it a few months now so figured I might give "normal" length sturrups a go after Xmas & see what happens!

I do the same. I collapse through my right waist and my right shoulder has always been lower. All the way down my back and pelvis were kinked as a result of multiple falls and injuries over the years as I have hyperflexion everything moves out of place easier. I went to a Mctimoney chiro because of collapsing through the waist and I used to get back pain often. Since having him my back no longer aches and I find it much easier to sit straighter, whilst I still find I have to work on my right side I can actually correct where as I couldnt before. My mare is also slightly crooked through her right pelvis naturally so we were both making each other worse and were jumping to the right over fences, she has had mctimoney chiro too and now we are both much straighter :). Would definetely recommend it :) no cracking which I couldnt stand its just manipulation of the muscles to push everything back straight and doesnt hurt at all :)

Thanks becca - Jay has weakness through the left side too which probably has contributed to my problem too. I really have to use my left leg to stop her falling out and i think tension has crept up my leg leading to me gripping up but also still trying to relax my left shoulder and it's meeting in the middle and collapsing

do you find you cant sink your weight down your leg (on the rein that it would be on the inside) and use your inside seatbone? that is my biggest problem! to activate my inside seatbone I end up no longer central in the saddle and struggle to then have more weight in my inside stirrup. Its much better than it was prior to chiro but I too have issues with making sure the leg isnt gripping or the inside body collapsing.

I found the biggest help to prevent the ribcage collapsing was to keep checking on my hand as if my ribcage collapses that hand lowers and if it does raise the wrist, roll the shoulder back in the socket, look round in the direction of travel a little more bringing the inside shoulder back and try to carry the hand a touch wider it makes it easier to keep the ribcage "solid" and then sink the weight a little more on the inside leg and it is easier to activate the correct seatbone whilst still remaining central and not twisting with the pelvis, gripping with the thigh or collapsing through the ribs :). Little action that makes a huge change for me! :) (if that makes any sense whatsoever!) :D

I have exactly the same problem, I collapse to the left (only on the left rein though). My instructor has really helped by making sure I'm sitting central in the saddle. Also bringing my left shoulder back helps too. It's quite easily fixed for me and if you're conscious of it you'll have it cracked in no time. :)

Take away the opposite stirrup to where you collapse to. Simples!!

It will get you straighter than anything.
