We only put the collars on our dogs when we take them out of the house. Additionally, I have never been able to keep a collar on a cat.

Maybe it's because I have a real phobia about having anything on my neck but I am not comfortable with expecting them to wear them all the time/

Do your dogs always wear collars?

Nope. When they're out and about for walks and at training, they wear a check chain on the dead link.

They were in collars constantly when younger but had a nasty habit of chewing them off.
Trust me, I tried, but tight enough so as they couldn't reach was too tight. Plus B gets a bit hot and itchy around his neck in the summer so don't want anything else to irritate him!

They're licensed, tattooed, DNA'd and microchipped so I can prove they're mine :p

yes all the time on my little dog, they are fine if fitted properly.
Had them on cats to,but the one with elastic so they can slip them if get stuck some where.

Collar on 24/7, with ID tag - being the breed she is the risk of her tanking off into the next county is quite high and although chipped I reckon I'd get her back about 48 hours sooner with a tag on.

In England she has hers on all the time, as we often leave the doors open to the garden, which isn't enclosed, and although she is good and sticks around the house/yard area if she does go a- wandering she has ID on her.

In NI she gets her collar off as soon as we arrive as she spends her days down the fox holes and she would get caught if she wore a collar. She is chipped as well and is well known in the area so on the rare occasion she strays to far we get a call to come pick her up. :o

Mine never wear them at home, but always when we leave the property, but only check chains. My dogs only wear leather collars with id tags when we are somewhere strange on holiday or similar, but they are all identifiable via ear tattoos.

Yes, she wears a collar during the day, with her ID tag on it (she's chipped to, but if she just wanders a bit too far, easier for someone to call me than take her to a vet). We take it off at night though, so she does get a rest from it. Cats too - one of ours is very good and always keeps her collar on. The other one is a nightmare, so she gets the cheapest collar we can buy so it doesn't matter if she loses it! Cats collars are always the safety catch type so they break if they get into trouble.

Yes, he has a tag collar on 24/7 and has a seperate walking collar (martingale type) which goes when we're going out

Sometimes I take it off in the house....

Always on when we are out on a walk.

I was under the impression it was the law that they have to have an ID tag on? (obv probably doesn't apply in the house...)

No, my dog only wears her collar when we go out for walks

I used to have 2 dogs, one was a mongrel the other a GSD, they both wore chains cos I thought they looked nice, anyhoo, my dad made a trellace thing at the top of the steps up onto the patio (dont live there anymore and both dogs are long gone) anyway, I looked out of the back door the one day and Max the GSD was sitting at the top of the steps, looked out again and though he's been there for a while, why hasn't he moved, he'd got the choker stuck over one of the pieces of wood so COULDN'T move ! so from then on no collars or chains, we had a dog door (yes it was BIG) so when I was at work they could go out the garden as and when, so I thought what if it'd happended when I wasn't there, he could of hung himslef.

Once we locked ourselves out of the house, my husband climbed in the dog door ! with max licking him as he tried

Never, only use slip ropes when out.

My old lab used to wear a magnetic collar for his joints. I think collars look uncomfortable and on coated dogs can rough the hair up against the way it lays.

Am prob wrong though if fitted correctly and I know it's a lagel requirement in some places. Also my boys are microchipped.

Ours has a collar on, contains his ID tag, and also because he's deaf when he makes a dash for the door, we can stop him as calling him etc is useless.

My big dog wears a magno collar in the house with his ID and micro chiptags - in case he gets out - but wears a leather half check when walking due to his nasty habit of reversing out his collar :o

The terrors wear little webbing collars 24/7 again for their tags. They eat each others if they have leather!!!

Chloe wears her collar all the time. Firstly because I'm sure its illegal not to, and also because I like knowing someone could always ring us.

She couldnt care less.

My understanding, and I am sure someone will correct me if I am wrong, is that it is illegal to take a dog out without ID attached to them. Our always wear collars when out side with a name tag with contact details attached.

My JRT and parents lab always have collars with ID tag on (off in the house occasionally though). The cats both wear cat collars with a bell and an ID 'barrel'.

Loki has a puppy collar with microchip tag that gets put on first thing in the morning and taken off after last sniffs at night. I would leave it off all the time when home if it wasnt that he fusses while I arse around trying to get the buckle done up before walks (having a puppy bladder, he has to go out as soon as he shows a sign that he needs too, can't really wait about).

He has a new collar on the way (and proper I.D tag) that's adjustable but has a snap fastening so will probably switch to just putting it on for walks when it arrives since it roughes his coat the wrong way. I'm not all that comfortable having collars on them all the time as we never did when I was a kid. Not a logical arguement but there you go :p

I'm lucky not to have to worry about legging it out of the door, as even if he did we live in a golf club, so he'd just end up in the club house/restaurant/bar. He's not smart enough to work the door code yet and one of the regular members would grab him anyways :o

It's interesting reading different peoples opinions on collars! As said we never used them in the past, nor did anyone else in our area. They seem like an outdated irritation for a microchipped dog imo (though I can see the benefit if somebody on the street picks up your dog), but then I didn't even know they were a legal requirement until I was researching getting Loki

Haha, look mum! I writted an essay!
