I thought a dressage then SJ competition format sounded great as something to do over the winter. But at my nearest venue, if you want to do a prelim level test you can only jump 50 or 65cm. The highest jumping round on offer is 85cm and that is combined with an elementary test. Is that normal? If so, is combined training very unbalanced in favour of dressage or is eventing very unbalanced in favour of jumping?!

Down here at one venue you can do a BE90 test with 70/80/90 jumps in different classes, BE100 with 1m fences and if you are really keen a PYO at BE 110 or above with fences at your own choice of height, this local venue is extremely helpful:)
The others that do it I think run to BE heights unless it is a low level comp where they go smaller.

They tend to run during the week as they are targeting the pro eventers bringing on youngsters.

I found the same round here, if I wanted to jump 75cm I had to do a novice test on a horse who is barely prelim. Part of it is that they follow Trailblazers as they are qualifiers and that is their combo. Occasionally there is a pick your own dressage test class.

The problem is it depends what direction you come from. I've spoken to more dressage focused people who are very established at novice and but would have 65cm as their limit.

What I did find which was interesting was that the standard was quite high. At a venue where I also showjump, there were more clears than at a straight sj competition at the same height and the standard of dressage was good too.

Trailblazers is a championship series so I guess anyone who only offers those classes will stick to the prescribed combinations.

Hmm, sounds like it’s aimed at riders like me 😁 although 70, 80, 90 seems like a better fit to me for p, n, e. Might check it out locally and see what’s on.

Bernster - I've done it at Brook Farm. The jumping was 55,65,75 and 85 combined with intro, prelim, novice and Elementary. There was also a pyo test class at each height. They ran straight dressage on the same day. One time they had the dressage outside with several arenas alongside and you jumped inside. Another time, they put the dressage indoors and jumped outside. I think in the summer it depends on what they're running the day before and after but at the moment I think they'll jump indoors. Separate warm rings for each phase.

It’s generally the way!
It’s either the jumpers complaining the dressage is to tough for the height of the jumps, or the dressage riders wanting to give their horses variety and saying the jumps are too big for their ele/med horse.

Round here, the only CT that seems to be well supported are the venues that run it for eventers and align tests/jumps with BE standards.

Some places do pick your own. I did CT at Maelor once and you can choose which dressage and which height SJ.

I also like the CT at Bold Heath because they sometimes do BE tests. So for 80cm or 90cm heights you have the usual BE tests, which just makes sense to me.

I did the CT at Reaseheath a couple of times. The BD one was weird, because the SJ working in fence was in the middle of the main course. It worked for my friend though, because her horse can be a bit spooky with show jumps, so working in in the middle of the course was great. it didn't work for me though, because mine gets complacent 😂
Their normal one has the heights/test combination you refer to. Personally I'd prefer to do an elementary test and a lower height 😂

I've seen this before at more "dressage focussed" venues.
We do have one good venue who run CT with BE dressage tests so they run 80/90/100/N & I and follow the BE SJ heights
