Why oh why are so many HW turnout rugs detach-a-neck??

Grr!

I don't understand why you would want to remove a neck from a HW rug anyway. A lighter rug when the sun comes out maybe....

Is it just me that has a phobia of them??

In the past I have had detach-a-necks leak in the gap between it and the rug or, if its a velcro attachment (like a PE one I had) it rips!!

As you can see from this post and my last one, I'm having a really bad job choosing a new HW for my boy!
 
well i actually like detachable neck rugs-you dont get that awful section of mane missing by the spring! yes they can leak a bit around the join and i could see that if your horse lived out 24/7 that would be a pain, but if your horse is only out for a few hours a day like mine they work very well !:)
 
Likewise I prefer detachable neck covers. Yes they may not fit quite so well but I only use a neck cover if it is really horrid, much prefer the sun and air on the neck, even with my partly clipped thoroughbred.

In my experience they're actually a better fit (obviously dependent on the rug).
 
If I get a detachable necked rug, I keep the neck cover as spare material to mend the rug. I never actually use neck covers, so I wouldn't buy a combo in the first place. ;)
 
I don't like detatchable necks either - paranoid they'd get their feet stuck in the gap when itching etc.

Mine all wear no necks for as much time as possible, and then just have their combo's on when it's really fowl and cold (they're neckless today even in all this wind and rain!)
 
I prefer detachable neck covers because the fit is adjustable to a larger variety of horses. Some horses can have a relatively long neck in relation to their rug size and vice versa.
 
Another fan of detachable necks here. I have 3 necks for my 2 horseware rugs. When one gets greasy on the inside, I take it home, scrub the grease off and let it dry, and while I'm waiting I can replace it with the spare. I think the grease that builds up on the insides of attached neck covers really contributes to rubbing.
 
im not keen on the genero weatherbeeta (lack of shoulder darts and smaller tail flap) but i love the freestyle detach a neck versions. My horse generally doesnt have a neck on her rug but i like having the option on a hideous day to put one on if necessary.

I thought that about the genero too. It has buckled not clips on the front as well.

Will look at the freestyle detach a neck versions - thanks......!
 
If it helps PE do HW with the necks integrated as well as detachable model? Ive used both types (But not hws 200g and lighter) from there and they work with mine great :). Combo one doesnt rub mane either.
 
I don't like neck rugs full stop so usually buy the detach a neck ones as don't often use them.

However, saying that I do find that if I need to use a neck rug that the combo actually rubs my lads mane out less than the detachable neck

I'd certainly reccomend Weatherbeeta detach a neck rugs. In my experience they don't leak around the join and fasten securely (with zips and Velcro).

Weatherbeeta rugs seem to be a generous fit, have had no rug rubs ( and no missing bits of mane), Never had a m/w or h/w slip around (rolling and hooning around - rug stays in place), straps stay done up and design means no chance of hooves getting caught in join.This is my favourite rug brand ; my hw rug is coming up for its sixth year of use and looks brand new ( have them washed and reproofed every summer) and the mw has only needed a slight repair ( that was due to a mouse munching it!).
As you can probably tell wouldn't be without mine. :)
 
I much prefer combo rugs! Much easier and IMO nicer than detachable necks but that's just my opinion/experience. Also with the combo rugs that don't have the seem between the rug and the neck I find that the mane stays pretty much intact.
 
I don't like detachable necks, they always leak between the rug and the neck and he ends up wet under his rug. Much prefer the combos, mine too has full neck and no neck rugs in every weight! ( I am not addicted to rugs, I promise) ;)

I am hankering after the new Weatherbeeta Stretchy rug (saw it at YHL and really like it) and may order it whilst OH is away next week! :D
 
Sheesh! That newWB rug is ££££! Is it just me, or have rugs(particularly turnouts) got ridiculously expensive in the last couple of years?!? I know fabric technology is advancing (&perhaps the design/cut) but hey,it's not rocket science or Paris Fashion week... I bought a Rambo Supreme hw turnout 5 years ago-it was £180,which I thought was v expensive at the time but wanted to buy quality (for all the reasons you do). The same rug(ok,maybe current version has a few tiny minor tweaks now,I don't know but essentially same rug) is now about £300! :-O I'm not saying good quality shouldn't be ££££ but that kind of increase?!? I think the horserug industry is taking us all for a ride (pardon the pun;)).
 
I have both types, & I find the detachable necks far more handy. Not only because they don't always need a neck cover, but because they are easier to get the right size. And I tend to swop neck covers about to different rugs too. I do tend to call anything that comes with a neck a combo though, regardless of whether its detachable. Although saying that, I was thinking about something else the other day & called one a new Zealand.
