I am not adding it all up sorry
frown.gif
...

I set aside £500.00 per month, which will buy me full livery, shoes every six weeks, insurnace, 1 to 2 lessons a week and other pieces I am invoiced for.

However I have just spent £160 on rugs which will come out of another account

.

What ever gets left over stays in that account for a rainy day.

Two horses on part livery, and a pony on working livery = £715 pcm.

Shoes for the two horses at £114 every 6 weeks = £82 pcm.

Feet trim for the pony = £10 pcm.

Wormers = £12 pcm

Entry fees for the two horses at approx £60 per show = £120 pcm.

Add to that tax and insure the lorry. Dentists visit, annual jabs etc.....

Waaaayyyyyy tooooo much !

I'd always assumed that it was a very cheap way of keeping a horse, but to be honest, I think what I pay for Part Livery (Accommodation for horse, bedding, haylege, hard feed, and someone to muck out etc...) isn't that much more expensive

This is turning into a scary post

Yes, we all spent loads on our horses, I dont spend very much on myself. My non-horsey friends spend fortunes on themselves, clothes, meals, make-up etc etc and if they added up what they spent - well!!

At least we all have a healthy hobby. If our money was'nt going on horses, would it be fritted away on unimportant stuff.

I look at it this way, I have something to show for my money, I enjoy it everyday and its there year in year out.

If I was spending on myself, fags, booze, clothes, dvd's the works would it make me happy.

I am not saying that I (you) go without, but the life style chosen is a dam good one.

Its interesting to see how much other people spend, and what I find amazing is the cost of suppliments versus food.

Do we really need to spend a huge amount on these suppliments that were'nt around years ago. I wonder, I know the human health suppliments have received a lot of slating in the papers over the years. Certain ones, oil, garlic, yes I can see, but the others????

I agree, I could keep my mare on part livery for less than I currently spend.

Wouldn't want to though as I like looking after her myself.

I agree DIY not as cheap as i remember. My part livery (380 a month) includes add lib hay, whatever hard feed I want, half a bale of shavings every other day & feeding/turnout/bring in and muck out. Not bad value after all.
Only problem is having 2 of them!!!

I think some supplements are not really necessary but unfortunately my mare does need both of hers and they are both rather expensive!

She has a supplement for Ulcers (having suffered from them badly in the past I now use this as a preventative and touch wood she has done very well since being on it) and a supplement to improve her shockingly poor feet.

I am going to regret this, but here goes:

DIY Livery: £110
Feed (incl. supplements): £63
Hay: £30
Shavings: £30
Shoeing: £41 (£55 every 6 weeks)
Worming: £12
Insurance: £20
Lessons: £80

So that's £386 - not as bad as I thought and I always buy expensive brand stuff + Blue Chip!

Have one 18 month old gelding.

Feed £23.50
Supplements £25
Farrier £10 ish (£15 trim every 6 - 8 weeks)
DIY Livery £100 (£25 per week inlcluding as much haylage and straw as you want)
Insurance £25 ish

Then there's wormers, dentist and vet's fees etc to add in and replacing things he frequently breaks etc etc. Also he doesn't have any tack yet.

£183.50 per month ish, but it always seems to work out more.

[/ QUOTE ] Many years ago I kept my horse on DIY, but by the time I'd bought extra bedding (because YO was tight) and paid someone to turn out for me, it cost as much as part livery, which I eventually changed to.

£170 per week full livery - £736/month (averaged over 1 year)
£40/month shoeing (averaged over 1 year)
£40/month insurance (averaged over 1 year)
£25/month horse clothing (averaged over 1 year)
£83/month entries (averaged over 1 year)
£56/month travel costs (averaged over 1 year)

£980 per month. However, next year horsey will behaving a 6 week holiday which reduces the £170 a week down to £30 a week for 6 weeks!

Lessons, feed, bedding, worming, clipping, exercising are all in the livery cost.

Oh, I am never honest with myself (or hubby
smile.gif
) when counting up costs. Since we get stabling, grazing, hay, straw and use of facilities incl walker all inclusive at my DIY yard things are not bad since I started on DIY; but I never have made a calculation on how much I spend on vet, wormers and equipment/ accessories (don;t really buy more than I need though) although I am lucky in that my girl goes barefoot and only needs a trim every 10 weeks ... also any entry fees and transport costs if I ever get anywhere are separate accounts ...I suppose all basics in I would be at around £300 a month but that may be optimistic; never spend much on myself though, I have a brother-in-law who is a hairstylist so I go there for my free haircut once in a while and clothes I am not that bothered about having new stuff all the time either and hubby supports the odd drink in the pub

I just worked mine out and both of mine are on DIY - but mine still comes to about £700 per month, and that doesn't include competition fees - bloody hell, no wonder I work 7 days per week!!

How depressing!

£240 livery, will change when my 3rd one comes back
£30-40 feed inc supplements
£80 shoes
£50 ancillary stuff

£400 total, will go up to about £500, offset by a sharer who pays £10 per week + shoes so:-
£320 rising to £420 with the new one (but I do have a plan to share him with another livery so keeping overall costs below £400)

I should add though that mine live out as much as poss and are all hardy types needing nothing special to eat...this is why I love natives!

For Four horses, for around one month give or take a few extra days I might get out of feed and hay

DIY Livery = £160
Hay = £48 four bales at £12 each
Straw = free
Feed for Madddie,Sandy and Ewan = around £45
Feed for Willie = £20
Farrier = £30 ( £60 every 8 weeks for 3 trims So just half it)
Insurance = £32
8 bags of big bags (15kg) of carrots =£12
other things such as licks, rugs or rug repairs (maddie's rug are never whole for long) = between £20 and £30

Total around £367
I would say I spend around £370 a month not that bad for four horses i think anyway.

but the there is things like wormer,new tack,boots and rugs the list goes on and on.
Then there's the vet when you need him and he alawys knows what to charge you

My retired 29 year old 13.2 new forest x mare probably costs about £130 a month now - full livery. Plus wormers and a trim every 6 weeks, etc so it probably average's about £150 a month. However I have recently moved her and it was costing me about £325 a month before.

It terms of equipment, she's very cost effective now, just a new headcollar every so often and the odd new rug every so often, so that's not bad going really!!

Mind I've had her for 21 years and she's fab and still going strong at 29 (touch wood, fingers crossed etc). She taught me so much and she did everything from eventing, BSJA, WHP to games (oh they were the fun days)!! She owes me nothing and is worth every penny!

just realised how lucky i am.....

Bud kept at home = no livery cost
dad makes haylage = free
mum + dad buy shavings = free
mum + dad lorry and diesel = free
shoe's = £40
feed = £10
supplements = £10
no insurance
no comps or training at the mo due to injury

so grand total of around £60 a month at the moment...... no wonder i can afford more clothes since he broke!?!

as Bud's been off no shoes, minimal feed means he's cost very little recently apart from the £2000 vets bill
