Competing in a pandemic

I'm rather concerned that Somerford don't seem to be cancelling/rescheduling any camps yet. I understand they need to make money, but they're washing their hands of it by putting it in the hands of camp organisers - and presumably then if it's not THEM cancelling, they don't have to offer any refunds or new dates. Whilst I appreciate it's mostly camping and outside activities, we still eat, shower and socialise in the same building - and what about the added pressure on the emergency services? I've been on a camp where we've had 3 A&E trips! (not the norm, I promise!).

Of course I wish the situation were different, and I'd be sad to see camps cancelled - but I don't like feeling like I'm having to choose between losing my £300 or doing something potentially irresponsible :(
 
This is where it gets difficult. If show centres cancel then they have to return payments/deposits. If competitions/camps/competitors cancel then they keep the money.

If camps/competitions cancel they have to return entry fees AND lose their deposit/payment.

The camp will want people to bail on them so they can keep the money. Somerford want the camp to either bail so they keep the money or go ahead so again they keep the money but make sure no one thinks it's them organising and thus lessons the rants at them.

The people who will lose out are the people who are booked into the camp and don't go because they are sensible.
 
Yep, absolutely. I think that's why they've made that their stance, and I think it thoroughly sucks.

(although I don't agree that all the camp organisers want to keep the money - the ones I'm booked onto are run by truly lovely folk who would be horrified at the suggestion!)
 
Online for me. The site I use has introduced a jumping competition, rather like style jumping, and are saying they are also going to have a Trec type comp too.
At least they are trying to get more things going, so something for everyone.
They always say they can add any level of test that you want to ride. They have always done DTM, which I love.
 
Active Rider have been sensible and cancelled their camp for the first weekend of April, but the latest posts from Somerford suggest they are business as usual.

I'm not going out on Saturday. I feel bad because the nice local venues are going to struggle thanks to this crisis (as many of us are). But I can't claim it is essential, so it's not right.
 
I believe there's definately going to be a further lockdown announced today, how can there not be when people are out flouting the suggestions - flooding to beaches etc. in their masses. Its insane. I will admit Ive still been doing my job (estate agent) because if Im not out on the road then I dont get paid, but I made the decision today to tell all my upcoming valuations that Im doing them virtually - I will not attend any properties for the time being and work from home anyway so thats not an issue. We're not going out unless its for food shopping. My kids are at home now and Im meant to be home schooling so thats another good reason to stay at home. I am riding when the weather allows and will hack etc. up until the government cracks down further, but I live very rurally and wont come across anyone on my hacks! Life continues as normal up here as Im surrounded by farms, the farmers cant stop. No venues are running competitions or even training now so I'm not out and about.
