Does anyone compete on their own??

I usually go with my friend but she has told me she cant take me anymore as she wants to jump bigger tracks so that means i may have to look into getting my own transport (which i didn't want to do til the end of the year due to financial reasons) but i have only just paid all my affilaition fees!! Typical!!

Anyway i wont have anyone to go to shows with as my yard is only tiny and only 3 of us compete, me, my friend, and a little girl who jumps juniors.

They both have their parents that they go with but my parents are not horses at all so i will be going it alone.

So does anyone else compete all alone and does it take the fun out of it??

Not competeing at the moment

but when I did it was usually alone and no, didn't take the fun out of it. Usually ran into a fair few people I knew anyway at the events.

I always go by myself, it's fine, sometimes the practice jump can be a little difficult. I know quite a few people at shows so I usually have someone to chat to. If I go to Wales and West my OH will come over in the evening to have a BBQ etc ( I only live about 30 mins away). My sister is sometimes at the same shows but we each have our own lorry as she events a lot.

I usually compete alone, you do find especially with the jumping that you see the same people at the comps week in week out. I chat to anyone and have random people holding May while I walk the course!

I generally put her back into the box inbetween classes, then can go walk the course for the next class. Just be organised and you will be fine!

Yes - I go on my own quite a lot. I really enjoy it and it you do make lots of horsey friends that way as you chat to other people more.

It is easier going with help obviously and I only go out XC when there will be someone else I know there who would take my horse home if I have a nasty fall.

Also, I have been thinking about wearing a XC armband or something even for dressage just in case of emergency - with phone numbers someone who would come and get my horse if was rushed to hospital or something - you never know!

I was hoping that i would get to know a few people as everyone usually competes at the same sort of shows. I'm just not very good at starting to talk to people

I was just worried that with all the waiting around you do sometimes it would get quite boring if you have no-one to talk to?? I can see my phone bill becoming quite high LOL

I nearly always go alone.
I again with some of the others, you soon get to know the regulars faces, and i try and get chatting - it helps with the practice fence!! And holding your horse whilst you walk the course

The only time i miss company is on the way home or if you've had a good day it's nice to have someone to chat too!

yeah I do!!!

You will be fine, and frankly you will be less stressed relying on others. i'd say the warm up jumps will be the trickiest but even then, there are always people about. just be forward and chat to as many as you can!!!

just don't be silly like me and drive home from a days hunting having fallen off (badly), concussing myself - and not remember it!!!

Tell you what i find works - compliment their horse! Its easy to do and people really warm to you if you're nice about their horse! I find it works a treat - you get a friend for life!

Thats quite a good plan actually!! We all know how us horsey people love to talk about our horses and love it even more when someone compliments them

I used to all the time as could only take my boy in the trailer on his own. Not quite the same but usually bumped into plenty of people that I got to know each time so it doesnt worry me going it alone. Always give someone an emergency contact number just in case tho!

Just an idea but you could write all your details on a piece of paper and hand it to the secretary when you collect your number so they know who to contact in an emergency.

I remember being at a competition once where a lady was knocked unconscious and whisked off to hospital and nobody knew which was her lorry let alone who to contact. In the end they had to phone the hopsital to ask someone to look at her mobile phone but it does show that these things happen.

Have fun xx

I go alone, I think the majority of people do I find my horses perform better if they have no friends lurking around to upset them

I sometimes go on my own. And TBH I dont really enjoy it so much if alone, mainly because I know nobody is on hand to help with little things - like taking my jacket as I go in to do my round etc.! It is irritating! And it can be difficult if you have a bolshy horse.

If you really wanted someone to go with you, ask a friend? Or even put an advert in your local paper or something? There are people out there who love nothing more than helping at horsey events (if they dont have their own). Im trying to get someone to help me at shows in return for free riding on one of my old ponies!

I always compete on my own (unless eventing, then usually BF or friend comes- but have gone alone).

Both of mine are so easy to do, dont need help, although nice to have someone to chat to! I always end up nattering to people once I'm there tho, good way of meeting people! And I enjoy bonding with Neddy

Take Fat Man out on his own for Dressage and Showing, but I always go with someone else jumping, as i've broken myself before ans been a bit stuck

Saying that, the little git was such a pr*t last weekend on his own, i've vowed to only ever take him out with a friend from now on

I only go on my own if i take one horse, if i take both then OH has to hold one for me otherwise would miss the jump off. I do prefer going on my own as I usually end up talking to more people and making more friends.

I used to compete on my own as I had no one competitive close by. Didn't bother me, just got chatting with the nearest poor soul I could find.

I have a mission to compete allround the country this year and if I happen to pop over your way I will drag you out to keep me company!

I usually have my groom (my sis) with me which is fine. However, I have a comp at Stockland lovell coming up and have now found out I have no one to come with me.

I think I will have to withdraw as I cannot load and put the back up on my own. Am gutted.
